In this video we delve into the near-limitless possibilities that MIDI brings to the guitar pedal world.
It’s a big subject with a tremendous number of potential applications, so we start from the beginning and explain the three basic functionality benefits that MIDI offers to pedal users. They are PCM (patch/program change messages), CC (continuous control) and MIDI Clock.
The upshot is that if you have MIDI-enabled pedals and some form of MIDI controller you can access a vast number of patch and parameter changes across multiple devices with one single footswitch press.
Please note that this video is focussed on the kind of pedals we use - high quality stompboxes, preferably with as much analogue signal path as possible. Regular viewers will know that we’re not into digital multi FX, rack gear or digital modelling amps/processors. They can all benefit from MIDI control as well of course, but we don't deal with them here.

I am a guitarist and a keyboard player. This is by far the best explanation. MIDI for guitar is underused. It ain’t easy, but if you keep the various ways MIDI works in your head and you can implement it, the world is your oyster.

I have toyed with midi in the past. I had a number of the line 6 rack mount units (delay, modulation) and used a midi controller to do a lot of what you are showing in the video. Ironically, your show in general made me bring back the board by my mic stand and ditch the rack mount units. When I saw the theme today I thought "Awe Come on!". Well done.

Challenge for another video - I challenge you guys to get as many G2’s and quartermasters as you need, and get ALL your pedals set up and switchable, and able to output to any of your amps! Just imagine the chaos haha The concept of digital brain, analogue heart is amazing. What an array of possibilities.

Oh man - this has blown my mind! I always kind of dismissed midi - A bit like you Mick I just couldn’t be bothered with it and I couldn’t really see the need for it! But this makes so much sense. To be able to change parameters on a single pedal using midi is awesome! The merge of analog/digital is the way of the future.

I have one of those original ADA MPC controllers. With new switches and a nice refinish it continues to serve me well after 30 years or so of its life (it’s older than me!)

It took me *years* to finally get into midi…I think everyone has their own journey. But now I can’t live without it. Two observations…the first is the most obvious. You can instantaneously switch from your wettest clean setting to a completely driven, dry crunch setting with one click, zero thought, and only what you absolutely need in your chain at that moment. Second and less obvious…midi is incredibly robust and reliable. By now, I’ve played several hundred professional gigs with my midi setup…some have been low pressure, some backing up major label artists, everything in between. It’s worked every time, no questions asked…and I have an es-8, external midi thru box, several cables (including 1/8” mini midi), running 3 separate channels with dozens of program changes. Midi is nothing to be scared of…you *almost* need to have it on the pro circuit nowadays with people running all these “shows” via pro tools, click tracks, in-ear systems, talkback mics, etc.

I started with MIDI keyboards 20 years ago, and only recently started using pedals with synths. So while it's not new, I can totally appreciate Mick's perspective, which is a bit overwhelmed at times. I identify with Dan though, where I'm totally excited by tech.

I use midi through a controller to witch patches on an old Boss ME-5. New midi controlling old midi, still works and is wonderful. It's basically an analog (except reverb and digital) H9. It just is amazing the standard hasn't changed in decades, controlling a DD-500 AND an ME-5

That was well done! I did know this stuff but I enjoyed watching this! TC electronics had a digitally controlled analog dual drive (nova drive) with MIDI capability many years ago. Apparently it never became popular and was discontinued. I still have one and now I feel inspired to take it out again. I remember it being a bit noisy but good sounding and highly flexibel with the routing. I certainly welcome the modern trend towards MIDI controlled analogue devices. It makes for compact killer setups.

I would love to see a Selah Scarlett Love v3 pedal on the show. It's a nice OD with seemingly simple midi capabilities (though I've never tried one). Also, I am intrigued by the RJM Mastermind PBC loop switcher. You can sift through songs on a small screen and your presets can become verse, chorus, bridge, solo, etc. So you can have your set list ready to go. However, I am like Mick. I have completely avoided MIDI. Love the show!

Another great video guys!! Two suggestions for future topics= First, Tones for Rhythm players. Love hearing you guys play separately, but would love to hear how you go through the process of sounding great together. Second, TPS "Live"!! We all have issues having great tone in the studio/practice space and having to adjust on the fly at the venue. Cheers and thanks for all that you do!!

This is a great intro to midi. I genuinely feel like I have a grasp of it based on this and honestly seems fairly simple. However it feels quite extravagant for your average musician, even though a midi rig would immediately tighten a band & ease the guitarists workload while playing.

I jumped straight into midi from being a straight into the head guy, but I'm doing a huge repertoire nowadays, (Yes open for business in Qld Australia), and I'm forcing myself to do this, as I need a "lot" of flexibility sounds wise and being the singer as well, I kinda couldn't afford not to. Guys, a show like this rightfully requires multiple subsequent references and viewings. I have done so several times now on several systems and I would like to thank you and Simon for making the difference between guitar volume and vocal volume essentially go away in your show. I am no longer forced to adjust my volume to accommodate either sound. Not that I don't like loud guitars. But I am glad that now the vocals are about as loud as the guitars are! Good job! Thanks!

Thanks! Have no midi pedals or controller but I have a pedaltrain novo 24! I would love to be able to play live and record with this midi stuff if... I could just wrap my head around it. Lol. You have helped me some though as always. I'll have to save up. I already have my Strat, Tele, PRS singlecut going into the best thing ever! My new Victory v40 with matching 2×12 with the g 12 m 65 creambacks! It's amazing! Does everything I need in an amp and THE dynamics...! Wow. I used to play blackface amps but I love the tweed twin and i kinda got that sound but with modern flexibility! It really is it's own amp though which I Love! I wish the best for you guys and the folks at Victory! From across the pond both TPS and Victory have helped me, been very kind and gracious, and especially patient with me on Victory's part. I wish all of you the best of luck and happiness in life. You certainly deserve it. I wish I could fly to England and just meet as many guitar folks, as well as others, as possible! That would brighten me up from the embarrassing things happening in the U.S. where I live. I just wish I could get out of here for a bit. Anyhow, sorry about that, it just came out. Love you guys!

25 years ago we used a Roland MC-50 to provide a click for the drummer, trigger samples, and do program change for the keyboard player (who used a "keytar") and my guitar effects patches and amp switching. It was a joy to stop woirrying about running back across the stage to hit a button when it was time for the guitar solo, but I still had feeedom to manually chnage things if i liked. We programmed it up in Cubase, so it was a doddle, then dumped it to the MC-50 for live use. Learn about MIDI boys & girls, it's really useful. Nice tutorial guys!

Totally unrelated but I just scored the double foot switch Carpe Diem off Reverb!! I've NEVER seen one listed! I was hesitant for a second, but honestly Mick's cheeky, smirk of approval during the Carl Martin Headroom/different reverb demos convinced me to take a chance! I've already gotten the Headroom, and yes I'm trolling yall's boards!! The Cali76, then Headroom was the best 1-2 punch of pedals I've ever made...and now an original Carpe Diem....as we say here in Californialand...I'm super STOKED! as always thanx for all y'all's hard work!! A " That Pedal Show" t shirt and QuarterMaster are next on the list after payday!!!

Ibanez made a neat programmable overdrive/Tubescreamer in the 80's, but since they were competing with Roland/Boss they didn't use MIDI. It could've been still used today, was really neat.

Blown away by this episode, wish I had enough gear and gigs to warrant exploring this terrain. I would be interested to see you guys talk about pedal mods- not the DIY content I see a lot of, but more a look at some common mods for stock pedals, some A/B comparisons, maybe some shout outs to available services (particularly here in the UK). Just a general look at how someone might want to add some professional spice to a fairly stock pedal board. Or otherwise, more exotic and expensive pedals are always a good watch too :)

MIDI is already standardized from about 1983!It is so simple and usefull once you start using it.I for instance use it on my pedalboard to change presets on the H9 and Source Audio programmable EQ with my Boss pedalswitcher. That Ramble fx Kismett overdrive looks very promising in that regard!

Nice video guys! You’re speaking my language today....MIDI. A really powerful tool for us synth geeks. Once you wrap your head around what it is and how it works, its great! I can record a performance while simultaneously automating numerous hardware synth as well as hardware FX parameters. It links and help several p How about a Pedal Show with synthesizers and pedals? We love them too. You can bring up re-amping, why impedance mismatch is a problem for us line level folks. Have MIDI inventor Dave Smith on, and a killer keyboard player on the show? Jack at Anderton’s isn’t bad at all.....and he seems like a cool guy. I use MIDI with the H9 Max all the time. Mostly its communication between DAW and synth, or sequencer and synth. Thanks.

Late to the party, but I had a chuckle when you asked about a synth show. I've been messing around putting my guitar through software synths over the last year or so, and generally, trying to learn to speak 'synth' with a MIDI controller/keyboard. I've been using MIDI for 30 years to control patch changes on my guitar 'rig', so I'm not new to MIDI, but I think Mick would have a stroke trying to get his head around how a synth works. I have to say, once you get your head around modular synths, you understand how effects work, anyway.

I am actually using a Behringer FCB1010 to control a "virtual" pedalboard at the Mainstage software, not best sounding but it is getting the job done. First time I got the FCB1010 I went crazy trying to understand that midi stuff in order to get it rolling.

Hey guys. Really enjoy your videos. I'm and old-school analog guy playing regularly in a live Worship setting. Our 4-song set list changes each week and I try to tailor my settings for each song to get as close as possible to the original recordings. My main pedals (all set up in-line) are the Strymon TimeLine and BigSky, and a some overdrives. Depending on the song, I'll use a few other pedals (Chorus, Trem, POG, EHX Pitchfork with Expression pedal). I plead total ignorance regarding midi and controllers. I just want to eliminate the "tap dance", Ideally, I would like some kind of controller so I could tap one time and bring up a pre-set for the Delay (with pre-programmed bpm) and the Rev for each song, then tap in other effects as needed (with the controller at the bottom of the pedalboard). Can this be accomplished? What can you recommend?

Great video (as per usual) guys. I used to use a Yamaha MIDI floorboard to control my Yamaha DG100-212 combo - but had to sell it all, alas, as it was too flippin' heavy for my sore back..! The sounds were awesome - and although it was digital, there was no "modeling" in it whatsoever - just 8 basic tones that you could tweak and store in 128 patches..!!!! :-)

Great MIDI tutorial intro. I am like Mick - not at all knowledgeable about MIDI, and now I at least know something about the questions to ask. The pedals in the video are pretty high end (H9, Timeline, etc.), and mine are not :-) but its still relevant. I have a Zoom MS-70CDR that can be controlled via MIDI (via a mini USB connection - although I don't yet know to what extent they support MIDI control). Thanks as always for making guitar audio learning fun and easy.

15 minutes in and i have to go lie down in a darkened room. This show is going to take a month to get through but I'm in for the long haul guys!!!!! When things get complicated I just listen to the ending of Hendrix's House Burning Down and things become simple again. Much respect to you both!!!!

Weird thing is - Mick here - it’s not complicated at all. Let’s take a car as example. So, imagine you’re a Martian. You have no idea what a car is, and Dan tries to explain it to you. He starts by explaining how petrol is used in the internal combustion engine. Doesn’t say anything about wheels, seats or journeys. It’s the same with MIDI. Start with: all this does is turn stuff on and off and changes settings. Next question. What do I need to turn on and off, and what settings do I need to change? If answer is ‘not much’ then forget about MIDI and run for the hills! If the answer is ‘loads of stuff’ chances are you’re already halfway down the road to a solution!

Thanks for that Mick and I agree totally (my comment was light hearted I hoped). I've been using midi with computers, controllers and DAW's for several years. It has been a long journey with plenty of head scratching but I'm getting there its just a matter of translation.

Ok - I know this was a MIDI show, but that Kismet sounded absolutely amazing! I hope you'll be comparing it against other OD pedals at some point (I know I know - you guys have done a ton already with OD pedals - but I can't help but ask after hearing the Kismet). Great show, once again!

Thank you guys for all the good work once again (in general). A helix comparison (as a switching system for analog pedals and use it’s digital effects with real amps, as a modeler compared to the real thing, etc.) will be very interesting in my opinion.

I have a question... I love the sound of a Boss BD-2 and have used one in various set-ups but with different settings for different tunes (and sometimes different settings within one tune). To achieve this currently, I'm using a Boss GT-10 multi effects pedal and programming each different BD-2 sound as a different patch - which works fine for me but my question is: Would it be a possible to invent a device that you can connect to your favourite single function pedal (i.e. Boss BD-2) and have the ability to "program" different settings? I've just had a quick look at my settings and have discovered I use 8 different BD-2 sounds..!

Dan please make one of your short short videos with the most complicated interactive midi setting!! Like sweeping the footswitch does 4 pedals or something equally ridiculous and amazing. I've never seen anyone have enough pedals and gumption to truly step into 21st Century Hendrix Astronaut territory with midi. I believe in you Dan!
