It certainly is a heartrendering song, yet beautiful music & sung from the magnificent Gilbert O'Sullivan!! I think he is 74 yrs old now! He had many hits too. I remember 'Clair' & 'Get down'. Such a lovely man. xx 💖💖💖
song also touched my soul, we have same reaction. song about frustrations, losing faith, losing loved ones is heart breaking although song is not based on the artists life, his lyrics happen in real life.

He is so Irish in his outlook on life in this song -- Well, somebody's got to feed the kids and get them to school tomorrow, luckily they take over and keep things going. Meanwhile, personal despair continues, until it heals, or not -- both are understood and accepted. Sensitive reaction to a glibly misunderstood song/poem. Appreciate this one.
Gilbert O'Sullivan (Real name Raymond Edward O'Sullivan) in an interview, said this song was not about his life. It was just an idea that he came up with and wrote. "Alone Again (Naturally)" is an introspective ballad, starting with the singer contemplating suicide after being left at the altar after his bride deserted him, and then telling about the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said that the song is not autobiographical, as he did not know his father (who died when O'Sullivan was 11) very well, and that his father had mistreated his mother. Also, his mother was still alive when the song was written.
This is a very hard song for me to listen to. I am actually 65, my parents, remarkably are 86 and 92 and getting very fragile. We have 2 cats and a dog and all are aging and becoming also fragile. Within 5 years I believe I will see a lot of loss and sadness. As I have aged I went from enjoying the melody of songs to listening to the depth of the lyrics. I have lost some friends, grandparents, but something happens when we get older where the emotional depth of loss becomes more vivid. Aging is hard, seeing others pass gets harder. Perhaps that is why people say that when their time comes they are at peace. As many of my friends will pass, parents, aunts and uncles, and others, maybe it will get easier for me to say that my time has come and I have loved and been loved and I will be ready. This song is harder to listen to as we experience being more and more alone.
Beautiful words Dave yes it’s not easy aging I’ve lost my grandmother dad sister aunt uncle cousin it’s just mom and me now we have a very small family my mom is 96 I’m her son 65 I sold my condo when dad died I couldn’t leave mom alone so I moved in she has dementia her doctor advised me to retire if I could I can so I retired to take care of her it can be tough sometimes I do everything now cooking cleaning laundry banking yard work I did that anyway she can’t do anything she forgets her short term memory is completely gone but she my mom I will gladly take care of her till the end. What I worry about is when she passes I’m all alone I never married almost did once but I chickened out I don’t want to be alone the rest of my life what do I do go to a bear look for some 60 year old woman nope can’t do it. Well when that time comes I will deal with it. I will always have a dog to keep me company haha sorry I’m rambling on Dave it feels good to get it out thank you Peace
@@stevesellers3170 since I had posted this 9 months ago, my Mom did pass on Jan 19. I am ok, sad for a bit but I focus on the happiness we had and the confidence she gave me to be who I am today. My Dad is not doing well dealing with the loss. I tell him that birth and death are single days and to constantly remember the 67 years of memories you built. But it does not help him much. Sad to now be 93 and these last years are not content and peaceful.
I think people miss the concept is "Loneliness not bad things which happen" or people feeling they are all Alone Again. He could have put any words with the sentiment and it would have fit. Any sad event, and everyone who was lonely at the time felt the songs meaning.
