I'm glad that works for you, but at 6'4", I'd be looking at even more turbulence from the bigger screen. Over the years, on different bikes, I've found that a smaller screen will result in less turbulence. If I can keep the wind off my chest, that's all I want. The full wind passing past my helmet is almost unnoticeable.
Which screen do you now use with your CB500X…have you found one that at 6’4” works for you well? Have you used a little sports style windscreen from WRS, for example? I’m wondering how that is at highway speeds...
Compared to my National Cycle windshields those are 1/4 the size 👍 plexifairing 2 is massive for a bolt on windscreen. Although plexifairing models are not available for a cb500x
As did I but i also have bar risers pushing my bars back. I have about 5-10mm clearence. I used a PVC hose used for compressed air or water. It was a pain as my windsheild bracket is not 100% straight. And i placed washer between all gaps. I also used the original plastic washer as the bolts were not large and i worried it would rub on the screen making issues in longevity. Great idea tho!
Congratulations, Lonnie! You're going to love this bike!!! But if you ride at highway speeds very much, you'll really appreciate the added solitude this windscreen gives you when it creates a quite "bubble" for you to ride in.
i have the d1171st for cb500x 2020 its the same as d 1121st for earlier cb500x i believe '' st'' stands for ''super touring'' i had some buffeting .... if you google d1171st youll see the screen copies the airvents of the stock one but its not cut so air doesnt flow through . so i cut the vents open ..... result ? no buffeting .... you are 100% right about what you say ...that air comes underneath screen and flows upwards until it meets air of the front ....
Could you show a picture of where you cut these out on the screen? I have a 2022 and I want to get rid of the buffeting. Also, do you see thru the screen when riding or over it? TIA
Great Video! Do you have a link for that cross bar mount that is attached on the windscreen bracket ? Been looking everywhere for one for my 2013. Thanks
Hey there! I just bought the same windshield, tried to apply your trick and failed miserably lol In the original support the screws doesnt come out straight but have a direction (inwards), and this means that when I assemble the first side, even if I tighten the screws a little, and try to move it, the windshield position is shifted in that direction… And I cannot reach the bolts with the screws on the other side! I don’t understand why in your video everything work so easy 😅
If you install the spacers, you have to bend the brackets inward a little. Also, just barely get the first one started before moving to the next one. Once all of the bolts are started, you can tighten them the rest of the way. Enjoy!!!!
I tried so hard without resoluts 😂 I’ve bend them as much as possibile but still I can’t fit the bolt.. even paused the video to copy your way I was using a 4cm spacer (1’ 4/8”), tomorrow I’ll go to buy shorter screw and try to install with smaller spacer! BTW, another really interesting thing is your gps bar, I cannot find anything online, have you done it by yourself? I was thinking to just take a bar of the correct size, drill holes and mount it with some rubber spacers
Yes! I made the bar by myself from an old badminton net post. I cut it the right length. Then I carefully smashed both ends to make them flat. Then I drilled holes on each end to fit the existing bolt locations. Then I pray-painted it black. And finally I assembled everything. I hope the shorter spacers work for you. Good luck!
Question about the spaces. Once you added those, which pushes the windshield more away from the bike, do you get more water coming up from underneath? It seems in my mind that you will get more air and rain coming from under the windshield resulting in a face full of water.
As always Chris good video... TY. Has anyone tried the Givi D1171S? On the 19+ models? Strange but I can't find anyone or a video that someone has reviewed. Maybe somebody on here has 😁
That's a great question! A friend of mine had a Givi screen on his 2019. I don't know which exact model his was. But if that's the right model number for the 2019 model, he really liked it!
I've got the same, but from kappa. Amazing for blocking highway winds and rain, but sadly there is noticeable push and drag as the screen is quite massive lol
Yes I feel that it is too big for the riding I do too. I kept my original windshield on my CB500X, and just put on a kit from Rally Raid. Which has longer screws and the spacers and it worked great I don't have that buffeting in the wind is perfect over my helmet. So one could just put longer screws and spacers that you can buy from hardware store and it work great it's worth a try. It would be much cheaper to do it this way.
@@DollyAndFamilyGetOutAndRide So you used screws and spacers to mount the stock windscreen a bit further away? May I ask what year your bike is? Thanks
Hi Taylor! Great to connect with another South Carolinian!!! :-) We have not done the IBDR yet...though I hear it's one of the most picturesque of all of them. We have a friend from Charleston who just did the MABDR. So that is pretty high on our list. We've done the TAT and the SCAR. If you haven't done the SCAR yet (South Carolina Adventure Route), it's totally worth spending 5 days exploring our amazing state. Check out the crazy series we did on it! ru-vid.com/group/PLMpCu16Bx7xOQ5_dakKfJ5bScXZQVuF8N. You'll meet Dana in the first episode (he's the one that just did the MABDR solo). And you'll meet Kris in Episode 3 (he's the mastermind and creator of the SCAR). Other great options we're looking at closer to home include the Smokey Mountains 500, and Smokey Mountains 1000. Another long-term goal is the Continental Divide. But keep us posted if you come up with a plan to do the IBDR. You can reach us on FB or through our website at www.motophotoadventures.com. Cheers!
I'm sure they make these windscreens to fit as many bike brands and models as possible with minimal changes. They way they save on costs. Plus every rider is a different height, with a different posture. So making minor adjustments to make the bike fit yourself isn't uncommon. For example, I added handlebar risers to mine, and lower footpegs. Do what works best for you!
@@markrenton5791 I'm 5'7 with a 30" inseam. I hope this helps! The good news is, it's a cheap DIY project. Give it a try...and report back if it was helpful? Thanks!
This particular model only fits 2013-2018. But they make a new version for the 2022 year. Just go to Givi's website and search for your bike's year to find the right model. I believe places like Revzilla should carry it?
After seeing your video I bought the GIVI D1178ST for my Africa Twin AS 2020. It's practically the same screen. Living in central Europe, I only use it during winter and it does what it's meant for, especially on the highway riding 130km/h at 5° celcius. But there's some buffeting (in all positions) because there's no hole in the screen like there is on the OEM screen. I noticed you use 2 different lengths for the spacers: is it the longest that goes on top or at the bottom? Thanks.
Thanks for watching! I'm sorry you're having buffeting. I don't have any at all...the air is super smooth over my head, and I'm riding in a perfect picket of quietness. But of course you're on a different bike, and probably of a different height than I am. :-) Still, I was having the same problems when I began my search for the perfect screen. So you're on the right track! I would do exactly what you're doing and play around with some spacers. My spacers are actually all the same length...except of course for errors in measuring and cutting. :-) As I mention in the video, pick up a piece of plastic pipe and cut some short spacers, like 1/4 inch? Then try 1/2 inch? Then try 3/4 inch? You just have to play around and see what works best for you! I hope this helps. Cheers...
Hi there, Giannis! This is the Givi D1121ST Windscreen, which you can find at: amzn.to/3tbBZJw. It will fit the 2015. We always put links to products in the description of our video to help you find it. So always check the description. Also, we have lots of videos on maintenance and accessories for the CB500X. Please subscribe and check out some of our other videos! Thanks!!!
Need some help. You reference Givi 1121ST? Have not been able to find that windscreen either on Givi web site or REVZILLA 1171ST is what they reference. Am I looking in the wrong place?
Ahhh...the sticker says "Africa Twin 500". But it's a CB500X. Here's why and how I changed the sticker: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nWQu9tZEcC0.html.
@@MotoPhotoAdventures Ah, now I see. I just picked up a 2022 used CBX with 3400 miles. It's going to replace my 2022 Versys X 300 I bought new last fall. I'm going to get a V-Stream windshield for it which I have on the Versys and like it very much. The one thing I hate about the windshield mount is that very skinny GPS bar (nothing fits it) so I'm looking for a good replacement for the windshield mount to get a standard 7/8" size GPS mount bar on it. A little bit of handlebar riser and footpeg lowering kit and then it will be more comfortable to stand up on. Factory rear Dunlop is down to the wear bars at 4200 miles so I ordered a Michelin Road 5. Should get 12,000-14,000 miles out of that one. Got a Honda 12 volt socket that I've yet to install, grip puppies and a helmet lock. Might get Happy-Trails pannier mounts this august when they go back into production. 72 years and still riding after 55 years in the saddle. I've got a garage full of motorcycles.
@@spydie hey that's awesome that you've been riding so long! Good on ya, mate!!! You're going to love the CB500X. It's a fantastic bike, super comfortable, affordable, and reliable. I've got a ton of videos on the channel for modifications and maintenance on the bike. I hope you'll subscribe and check it out. Here's a link to a bunch of related videos: www.youtube.com/@MotoPhotoAdventures/search?query=cb500x. For your footpegs, I recommend the SW-Motech offroad pegs...wide, comfortable, and lowered. I did the handlebar risers as well. Both those videos you'll see my friend Jason install on his V-Strom after he saw how much I loved mine. Anyway, have fun checking out the channel. There are tons of amazing adventure rides as well, since I took my CB500X on the Trans-America Trail, the Mid-Atlantic Backcountry Discover Route, and more. ENJOY!!!
@@MotoPhotoAdventures I will check out that link. Thanks. I don't like the SW-motech lowered off-road pegs. I want to keep the rubber anti-vibration pegs. I found another company that makes a lowered mount where I can use the factory pegs, Motowerk, but unfortunately are sold out so I'll have to wait until they get more in stock or find some other company that makes the same item.
@@spydie the factory pegs are extremely narrow. One of the biggest benefits of the SW-Motech pegs we use is that they are much wider. This makes them a LOT more comfortable when standing, especially for longer periods of time. Also, they do come with rubber mounts like the factory ones. We just don't put them on ours because we find this bike is quite smooth and doesn't need any vibration dampening in the footpegs. Not pushing you towards SW-Motech. Just wanted to alert you that keeping the factory pegs is going to get uncomfortable standing for long periods because they are so narrow, whether they have rubber damper on or not.
I look over it most of the time. It's tall enough that if I hit a rainy patch I can duck down behind it, which is nice. But honestly, I don't even notice the screen anymore when I'm riding...yet it protects me 10x better than the stock one did!
Hi TreiGamer! My eye level is just above the screen. So generally speaking while riding down the road I look over it. When I'm on technical terrain and have to watch the path down closer to my front wheel, I sometimes look through it. But it's such a clear screen that it doesn't bother me a bit. Plus I usually stand up on the pegs during those situations, which again allows me to look over it. Check out this recent adventure we did and you'll see lots of shots from my side-mounted helmet camera (Sena 10c EVO), as well as shots of me riding that the other guys shot of me, so you can see what the height of the screen looks like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dhs96YJFnoA.html. Honestly, I've never felt like my vision was impaired by the screen in any way.
@@MotoPhotoAdventures thank you! I’m 5’6 with a 28 inch inseam so I lowered the seat by trimming the foam. I’m going to try your spacer idea with the OEM stock screen first.
@@TreiGamer that sounds good! I'm 5'7" with a 29 inch inseam. So we're pretty close in height. I paid more attention yesterday and found that I difinitely look over the screen for normal riding/commuting/highway/etc. I just love that quiet "pocket" of calm air I ride in! I listen to music a lot when riding. So the quietness of not having wind whistling through my visor really helps enjoy the music more. Plus my neck doesn't have to strain against the force of the wind. With the stock screen, if I looked left or right while on the highway, the broad side of the helmet caught the wind and pushed my head back. Now I can enjoy the sights on either side of me, without my neck being pushed back. Anyway, hope the spacers help. If not, grab one of these. You'll be glad you did!
@@MotoPhotoAdventures what bolts did you buy? I went to Home Depot yesterday and got some 2 inch bolts but the threading didn’t match the existing ones.
@@TreiGamer you need to take one of the old ones in with you. They are Metric, not SAE. That's probably why the threads don't match. The store has a chart of thread patterns where you can screw in the old one to determine which size and thread pattern you need. Note that Home Depot and Lowes can sometimes be more limited on selection of Metric bolts. ACE hardware is a good option if you have one. Or once you determine the correct size, order from Amazon.
Has to be buffiting, with no opening on the windscreen, has a little effect on the gpm, e handling in heavy wind, due to its height, visibility in the rain, etc. Compliments on wonderful, marvelous etc are not helpful. An unbiased pros and cons review would be more helpful.
I'm sorry to disappoint you, but there is no buffeting at all with this windscreen. The way I mounted it with the spacers makes the airflow smooth, creating a perfect pocket for me at 5' 7". I've tried other screens and this has been my favorite. I like it so much that when I crashed the bike and broke the screen (see Episode 42 of our Trans-America Trail playlist), I bought the exact same screen to replace it. No sponsorship BS...this is my honest review.
@@MotoPhotoAdventures If you mentioned your height on the review I missed it and glad it works for you. However, reviews from people over 5' 10" are not good about the buffiting. At 6' doubt the windscreen will offer the same wind protection as an extension. It can be also moved without tools.
@@fixento I would totally understand for taller riders this might not be the best. I specifically address my height and how the airstream with this windshield (and the DIY spacers I use), flows just above the top of my helmet. So deductive reasoning would indicate this wouldn't work for a 6-foot rider. But honestly, anyone that tall probably should be looking at the Africa Twin instead of the CB500X! 🙂
