Glen Campbell talks about doing studio work as part of The Wrecking Crew.
Before Glen Campbell was the Rhinestone Cowboy, Glen was part of a group of session musicians known as the Wrecking Crew. This is an out take from an interview that was done for the The Wrecking Crew documentary.
The Wrecking Crew
The Wrecking Crew wielded tremendous influence over rock and pop music in the 1960s and early 1970s. These unsung instrumentalists were the de-facto backing band on hit records by The Beach Boys, Phil Spector, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, Sonny & Cher, Elvis, The Monkees and many more. These dedicated musicians brought the flair and musicianship that made the American “West Coast Sound” a dominant cultural force around the world.

Glen moonlighted as a top-rated network TV star and had a little side gig as an internationally acclaimed multi-platinum recording artist but dang it if he didn't love his day job -- a strumming and a picking along to other people's songs -- best of all. :)

He's got some humility. He was one of the most capable variety show hosts ever. He was the host, an act, and could have been the entire show if he wanted to. We would watch him every Sunday without fail, us clan of fussy New Yorkers.

He said he went on the Summers Brothers Smother Show. I believe he's referring to the Smothers Brothers Summer Show. Who knowns, maybe he didn't have a slip of the tongue and that's what they jokingly called their summer show. Either way, I Loved this guy as a guitarist. What an awesome talent he was. As were the entire Wrecking Crew. Thank you Mr. Tedesco for telling you're amazing Fathers story and introducing us to these great musicians who outside of the business were unknown to the general public. It wasn't until the Beatles broke up and George Harrison and John Lennon started using some of these guys on their solo recordings that I came to know some of their names. The biggest hit makers of all time. The Wrecking Crew. RIP to those members who we've lost because the world will never see their likes again

Looking back on his career, I think he should've really exploited his guitar skills the way Jimmy Page, another 1960s session musician, did. He's a brilliant guitarist, but I think the general public thinks of him as a crooner.

The Regular Smother's Brothers show went on hiatus during at least one summer, and Campbell sort of took over and did the show during that time. I think that name was their way of letting the world know it was still Tommy and Dickey's show, with Glen as temporary host.

So, do you think he could make more money doing studio work?
@joeschembrie9450
@joeschembrie9450 2 года назад
He mentions a hundred dollars a session, which is about seven hundred dollars in today's money. Do four sessions a day, and that's almost $3000 a day, $15,000 a week, $750,000 a year. He probably made more money as an 'artist,' but the money you make as a top studio musician is very good, plus like he says there are big lifestyle advantages because you're not on the road and you're hanging out with a great group of people.
