Glucomannan Did THIS to My Microbiome

Glucomannan is a dietary fiber made from the root of the konjac plant. This is available as a dietary supplement or in food (shirataki noodles aka "miracle noodles"). But how does glucomannan affect the gut microbiome? Will glucomannan help feed the good bacteria or increase the level of bad bacteria...? Stay tuned to fine out!

How could I have missed your content for so long? My spouse is a serious scientist who is scathing about most of what passes for science these days & you are the only nutritionist I listen to that he doesn't wag his head at. I can't tell you what an accolade that is, worthy of some kind of medal. 🎖

The only conclusion by listening to you and a host of other top gut experts over the last few years and trying to figure out my own severe gut problems is that no one really knows what is going on in the human gut. Similar to u, at certain times in my life, simply just drinking water can cause severe gas and distention which just shows how crazy and chaotic your digestive system can be. Anyways, I'm still struggling with severe issues, from autoimmune problems to gas/diarrhea, to impaired vision that gets worse when my my gut worsens. All the Dr's from eye specialists to rheumatologists, to (obviously) gastroenterologists have no clue what to do and haven't even been able to give me a diagnosis beyond ibs. I appreciate your knowledge and love your content and hopefully I will be able to one day figure things out. Thx

Yep. While we know a moderate amount about the human parts of the gut, our understanding of the microbes (bacteria, yeast, parasites, archaea, bacteriophages) is just grazing the tip of the iceberg. That being said, the question isn't if we can ever know it all. The question is, can we know enough? Enough to inform our decision making and heal. And I think the answer to that question is almost always yes :) Wishing you the best of luck! Dr. D

Consider being worked up by an immunologist who can check your tryptase levels in your blood and a 24 hour urine checking methyl histamine, Leucotriene E4 and prostaglandin F2 Alpha.. There are a few others to check in the 24 hour urine but they escape me right now, but this may determine whether or not you have Mast Cell Activation syndrome issues or systemic Mastocytosis.. and while you are at it, have your PTH (parathyroid) levels checked.. Even a high normal PTH can mimic an autoimmune problem and doctors seem to forget to check PTH.. If you have been avoiding dairy products or calcium, this would also cause the PTH to go Hyper and mess you up, but its easy to fix by adding the right amount of calcium to your diet... Just a stab in the dark...

Hello there, I was reading your post and first thing that occurred to me to ask you, ARE YOU HAVING ANY OTHER ONGOING ISSUES ANYWHERE IN YOUR BODY, ANYTHING!?!? such as periodic headaches? Loss of sleep? Poor appetite? Are you chronically overweight or underweight? Is there a family history of autoimmune disease? Chronic allergies? There are soooo many other systems to check on that could be affecting your gut! I'm sorry you haven't been able to get any answers, but I had GREAT SUCCESS once I was treated by an A.R.T. PRACTIONER, it healed in 3 months what my alternative chiropractor couldn't help me with in over 8 years! I loooove the work! ( it also involved ULAN NUTRITION TESTING)

I'm late to the party, but great video! I've been trying to cook with glucomannan (and psyllium) wherever possible and it certainly seems to help a great deal (supplementation is great but I find when these fibers are _in_ my food they seem to work even better). Anyway, your comments about stress and sleep really resonated with me, and I wanted to share that anecdotally I went from a decades-long baseline of "miserable" with the occasional reprieve due to glucomannan and psyllium to a baseline of "pretty darn good" with sublime results from these same fibers when I started taking bupropion for seasonal affective disorder. You'd know better than I would, but my working hypothesis is that dopamine regulation helps maintain my GI lining function and high quality prebiotics help maintain my microbiome, and that miracles happen when both are simultaneously at their best. I'll look through your other work, but figured you might find the connection interesting.

I recently found your channel and am in love. Another excellent video! Yes! Talk about phyla because everyone craps on firmicutes but that’s one of our biggest butyrate producers! And yes talk about crossfeeding to highlight the point how complex this topic is. So curious, with akkermansia going up, did you notice any weight changes? That finding is fascinating. So this confirms a paper that recently came out (sorry don’t have the reference at the moment) that fiber will have different effects on different people. Maybe that’s why you are seeing some of the surprising findings. But your physical experience is pretty fascinating. If you felt so great, do we really worry about some of the good stuff going down? It’s such an intricate dance. 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Well, I only took it for two weeks, so no, I didn't see a decrease in my weight. I was just talking to someone on the FODMAP Freedom weekly coaching call who said she lost 40 lbs taking glucomannan, though! Also, I whole heartedly agree RE: Firmicutes. Actually, ALL of our butyrate producers and most of our SCFA producers are in this phylum. The only exception I can think of is Bifidobacteria which is in a different phylum.

I'm thinking that the polyphenols in red wine's may have boosted your bifidobacterium. I read a study that stated "Polyphenol supplementation increased health promoting microbiota abundance of bifidobacterium". The study also report that it reduced clostridium. I guess I may have to take a glass of wine on occasion. Note: Pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, and syrah are dry wines containing the highest levels of polyphenols. Thanks

One more video idea. It turns out lots of common medications such as oral birth control, steroids, NSAIDs, statins, protein pump inhibitors, metformin, and many others mess up our biome. Of course, antibiotics too. I think it would be a very interesting to find out more.

Hmm.... Because just as pioneer functional medicine practitioner Richard lord says.. Depending on the food you eat The Variety of different foods you eat.. They are going to make the bacteria in your gut fluctuate. Beans to raw fruits and vegetables For 3-4 days It All is going to make the bacteria in your gut change. I would love to see you do some videos maybe in the future on how raw fruits and vegetables and things like beans change your microbiome. When you repeat this experiment, you should probably eat the same exact foods for breakfast lunch and dinner every single day while you're doing the experiment. You also have to take in the fact that I'm pretty sure I remember that bacteria is by volume so when 1 bacteria goes up Certain other ones have to drop. It would be great if you did videos on the hydrogen producers and on the bacteria that eat the hydrogen. Few doctors call it the hydrogen consumers. P.S. .What does washout mean, And C- B, And two stand DEV P..S. This is probably 1 of the best videos to come out on RU-vid in literally the last year.
@gutmicrobiomequeen
@gutmicrobiomequeen 2 года назад
Oh, thank you! That last bit made my day 🥰🥰 I don't know about the raw fruit and veg video since I already eat a fair amount of both... but! I decided to do two additional experiments with fruits I'm going to be eating a ton of soon: Figs and then Muscadine grapes 🤩 My folks have a fig tree and I stuff my face with them every July/August and then shortly after that it will be Muscadine grape season here in NC. I decided that it would be too hard to try to separate what the fruit is doing vs the prebiotic supplement, so I'm just going to track the changes with the fruits before I resume the series (I'm trying to be a good scientist!) Also: Washout = taking no prebiotics or probiotics (returning to baseline) Column minus column is just the absolute change in the numbers so you can see the magnitude of the change (either glucomannan minus baseline or washout minus glucomannan) 2 St Dev = 2 standard deviations (which I'm using as a quick and dirty way to judge statistical significance)

Now THAT is a smart woman. Take TESTS before and AFTER to SEE its working. Rather- you have a majority of ignorance all over. "It doesnt work" "Its not for me" Its real funny you know? People are soooo ignorant that they think they have to FEEL something to know its beneficial. Or they expect magical results in 2 minutes. Or, they don't follow the instructions. Or they ask "is it safe" 😂😂😂😂😂😂 As if they dont use 7263834 things where they NEVER asked that question not once. Just took it blindly. I mean logically they HAD partake in activities that led them to the point to where they want or need to use glucomannan in the first place. Smh. Its funny. It really is. Also. People have weight gain for different reasons. If your not losing weight, there's an issue somewhere else. Anyway. Smart. Very smart. Unequivocal results. A live undisputed test that tells you what is going on where. Not just blindly speaking out of your rear end. Its great
