Awesome video! Thanks so much for sharing. I wouldn't have attempted this upgrade without your help. I just finished the install and my hands will be thanking you all winter! Thanks again!
Thank you for posting...This video helped me replace 2015 GMC Sierra steering wheel. Mine wasn't to upgrade the wheel only to replace it. Over the years it had gotten pitted and nasty. Thanks again!
I am going to buy a new truck and love the heated wheel on the 2020 loaner I have ans thought to myself, " I should contact Phil Gamboa." Quick search and found this video and you already contacted him! He is an amazing asset to the GM forums and sites. Great video! Appreciate you making this for all of us. Cheers.
Thanks for the video it was very helpful. I just finished the install. It was a little more difficult than I thought, I had a very hard time with replacing the plastic shroud and disconnecting some of the wiring. But thanks again very helpful. I’m digging the heated wheel 👍🏻
Nice job 👍 and thanks for giving Phil a shout out. I watched his mirror upgrade video along time ago and couldn't find my way back to it until you said who it was you contacted. Again thanks for the video. Nicely done ✔
sitnlow4life for your truck if it doesn’t come pre wired like this GMC did. The plug that was in the dash that he plugged the new clock spring into, some trucks don’t have that part of the harness and Phil offers it for sale at HarnessDr.com
Awesome video man, Very detailed, Thanks for making the video, I plan on doing this upgrade to my 2017 Silverado 2500 HD, I messaged P Gamboa about this, as i had some questions, Gamboa's video on his center console install helped me tremendously when i went to install a center console into my truck, i was in constant contact with him during install, very lengthy install, but worth it.
VERY well done! Wish i had snap ring pliers! LOL. I found removing that to be the hardest part. It fought me for 20 minutes! The 2nd hardest part was removing the bottom shroud cover. Didn't realize the tile lever handle came off like that! Nicely done! I think this video will really help those on the GM-Trucks forum be more comfortable with this upgrade. Just a side note: There are some trucks out there with the 2-pin mate connector down below to plug into, but GM didn't continue that run into the fuse panel. So while present in some, it may not be hot. Great details on this!
Phil Gamboa thank you, and again I really appreciate the advice on the wiring. I now have all of the console parts but I need to find time to get it installed.
Phil Gamboa I forgot to mention about the snap ring thing. My wife and I changed out her F550 front wheel bearing on I25 in Casper Wyoming when it was like 10 degrees out. I think it took at least 45 minutes with a Leatherman and a flathead screwdriver to remove the damn snap ring! I had like 10 different ones at home in our nice warm garage....250 miles away.
Great video man! Looking forward to switching my steering wheel out on my 18 silverado! Subbed to you for great instructions on how to remove and install everything!
James Barton cool, thanks for watching. I’m working on an Aux switch mod video series for the center dash switch right now. It will be really nice if you plan on adding any accessory that takes a switch.
Tinkering Fox The only thing is that I keep pushing my limits with the Mrs in all these mods I’ve done. Might have to wait a few weeks for steering wheel. Lol
Man, I wish I'd seen your airbag trick...did my swap about two years ago, and had no real issues but that airbag was a *bear* to get off. Working blind, etc. The cell phone...gah. Coulda, shoulda, woulda...
I think I'm going to order the heated steering wheel for my 2019 Tahoe and try this install after watching your detailed video. Thank you. I'm assuming it should be virtually identical to do. EDIT: Just finished this conversion and it works flawlessly!
@@KantnerRacing mine is an LT. I did the install and everything plugged in just fine and it works like normal. You might need to get another few wires or plugs for the LS trim
@@waals2663 What bugs me, is that 'LTZ' always meant the best 'fully loaded' truck you could get. My 2012 LTZ had air in the seats (still no heated steering), but my 2018 does not. It would be nice if they would keep a constant pkg. Now with the other higher priced packages, an LTZ seems mid-grade...??...LOL.
I forgot to ask you about lights and the BCM. Is anyway to know if the BCM has the right programming to do that led light switch install. Id just hate to spend the money and find out BCM doesn't support it. Thank you sir.
Will this newer style steering wheel from 2014 on up, work on a 2012 Silverado with the previous style wheel? I would love to change mine to this style steering wheel.
Great video. I have a 2015 Sierra SLE, where did you order the steering wheel? I want to do this, I actually called a GMC dealer yesterday and they said they wont even touch this project. Also, did the new wiring come with the steering wheel?
Great video. Thanks for posting. I’ll actually be attempting a 2022 Sierra steering wheel (uses the Torx bolt, not a nut.) I may have to swap the steering column. Oh and did I mention it’ll be going into a 2007.5 NBS Silverado? Haha.
great video, could you tell me if the part # you have for the heated steering wheel has controls on the back side of the wheel ? I just want to make sure I order the correct one
MRS. Claus bought me a new wheel for Xmas for my International CV. I’ll be shooting another video swapping it out but also adding the right side steering wheel controls and upgrading the cluster. I’m still squirreling away the money for the cluster.
That's awesome! The Impala is actually my wife's car. Based on my research, I'll need the wheel ($60) and harness in the wheel for the heat (included with wheel) and the heated steering wheel button ($30) and clock spring ($70). I was hoping I didn't need the clock spring, but I do. Just like the one in your video, the heated clock spring has extra wiring. It's a little pricey, but it would be cool if I could pull off the swap. I just wanted to stop by to give you credit for an awesome how-to video. I make them as well and I rarely, if ever, see them done this well. So kudos!
Awesome video, I'll definitely be using it in the near future. Just have a question. My truck is already equipped with a heated steering wheel but the element has burnt out in it. Do I need to replace the clock spring or can I just get a new steering wheel and swap it out?
so if the truck doesn't have the heated wheel "option" say like a 2010 tahoe, can that plug just get connected to 12v and ground? are there other wires in that heated steering wheel cable such as a trigger to turn it on (when the car starts)?
I know that some vehicles do have a preset for heated/cooled options upon remote start but I don’t think these have that ability. As far as the 2010 goes I’m not sure but it’s likely very similar (power and ground)
Just completed this yesterday. Excellent detailed instructions! I’m not getting any power to the steering wheel controls or horn. All the connections are tight and the heated wheel fuse is good. Would you suspect a faulty clock spring?
Yes, that sounds like the likely suspect. The ribbon inside can break easily and if it was put back in the box and returned before you got it that sounds like a pretty easy scenario.
Clear and to the point, thanks! I've found that the steering wheel w/ the crash alert button is cheaper for some reason so that's what I purchased. Does that mean the clock spring part number will change or can I use the clock spring w/ just the heated wheel feature? Basically I'm wondering if the connector on the wheel will be different since I purchased the wheel w/ heat and crash alert.
I believe there are four different clock springs, with and without heated wheel and those for 1/2 ton vs HD. The difference between 1500s and HDs is the number of plugs on the airbag. I think the clock spring is populated for all wiring other than the heated wheel.
@@kevefox thanks for your quick reply. I forgot to mention I have a 17 Silverado 1500. Do you see any issue with buying the wheel I purchased and the clock spring you mentioned in your video?
The clock spring will be different as the video shows a 3500. Here is a link for a part number for the wheel.... www.gmpartsdirect.com/auto-parts/2017/chevrolet/silverado-1500/ltz-trim/6-2l-v8-gas-engine/steering-cat/steering-wheel-scat And the part number for the clock spring..... www.gmpartsdirect.com/auto-parts/2017/chevrolet/silverado-1500/ltz-trim/6-2l-v8-gas-engine/electrical-cat/air-bag-components-scat
Question... will a steering wheel work with the volume control and heated function work with any versions of gmc intellilink? I have a 2018 gmc elevation NON sle model so doesn't come with the newest intellilink but still the 7" screen? Hope that makes sense.. nice video
Subscribed! Phil is the absolute man and has helped me a lot along the way with my truck. I'm hoping you can help me out. I am looking to do this upgrade as well, but I am also hoping to upgrade my cluster in the process. I have a 2017 WT that has been completely overhauled inside and out except for the cluster, which I can't get any solid direction on. The truck was an IO3 and is now an IO5, so I have the HMI module in now. Any idea what I would have to do to get a new upgraded cluster working? Would it be the same clock spring you added, a new steering wheel (with right hand controls) and a programmed cluster? Any help is appreciated. Thank you for this video! I
That8One4Dude thanks for watching, and yes, I agree, Phil is the man! Here is a link to a discussion on the forum about your exact inquiry...... www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/192664-wt-trim-with-color-dic-steering-wheel-controls-io5-stereo-retrofit/
AWESOME video!! I have been looking for this! I also have a 2015 Sierra HD. It is an SLT but did not come with the heated wheel. That being said, I could like follow your video to the T and have the same result, correct? Thanks again!
Thanks. Yes everything should be the same. Some trucks have the power connector but power is not supplied to it. P Gamboa on GM-Trucks.com has a fix for that. You should check for power with the key on at the connector before starting the upgrade just to know whether or not further work is needed.
Yes, if the wiring isn’t there Phil Gamboa at harnessdr.com/ can help.I got my wheel and clock spring through www.gmpartsdirect.com/. Let me know if you need help looking up part numbers.
If I have this steering wheel already (heated, music controls, etc) will I need to replace the clock spring and airbag cable? Or will I just need to swap the worn down steering wheel with the new one? Thanks!
Yes, it can be done. There is some custom wiring and a few other things involved. I’ve read about it on the Gm-trucks forum and I would like to upgrade my 2019 International CV to having steering wheel controls eventually but money is pretty tight right now.
Tony Guerra there is a little bit of wiring involved and I think you need a new cluster too. I’ll be doing this on my ‘19 International CV soon. It’s a Silverado 6500 in disguise. I’ll Shoot a video.
What is the model steering wheel that you have in the video? I want one with heated wheel, no crash button, and black leather with silver accents on it. Looks like the same one you have in video.
Hi, great video. I am in the middle of installation and I found one plug where you show the heated steering wheel on the harness But it’s different than the plug from the wheel? I assume it’s the heated steering wheel plug as I checked the fuse box and there’s purple wire in the correct spot and 7.5 fuse in for it.
That does happen. GM switched plug designs at some point. I know Phil Gamboa at Harness Dr. makes a kit. harnessdr.com I was on the road when I first responded. You can just bypass the plug altogether and hardwire it if you’re halfway through install and need to get it done. You may even be able to disassemble one of the plugs and still use the OEM pins.
Disconnecting the negative works the same only if you contact your wrench to ground while loosening the terminal you won’t damage anything. First look up the correct part number by searching on a GM parts website, then google, eBay and Amazon with those part numbers.
Great Video! I am planning on attempting this on my 2019 Silverado 2500HD very soon. I read through the comments, and Iam hoping you can let me know the part numbers for the steering wheel and the Clock spring. I do not currently have a collision alert indicator on my steering wheel, if that helps! Also, the steering wheel I currently have is black. Thanks in advance for the help!
@@kevefoxThanks for the response and the information! I do have 2 questions, if you don't mind. I mentioned that I do not have a collision alert indicator on my steering wheel, does that mean that I do not have a collision alert on my truck? second question, will any re-programming need to be done after switching out the steering wheel and the clock spring in order to get the heated part to work?
Yes, there is an extra wire internally and an extra pigtail for the heat power source. Here’s a link.....scroll down to the second picture and look at part #1 this is for a ‘16 3500 Denali.1/2 tons are different from 3/4 & 1tons. www.gmpartsdirect.com/auto-parts/2016/gmc/sierra-3500-hd/denali-trim/6-0l-v8-flex-engine/electrical-cat/air-bag-components-scat
Adam Schutte Just the numbers that I put on the screen. There is a difference between half ton and an HD truck though. When you look on say GM parts.com just put in your year make and model and then find the part that fits it with a Denali model and heated wheel. Clock spring is in the Air Bag section
I don’t but here’s a link to a thread that discusses the process. www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/192664-wt-trim-with-color-dic-steering-wheel-controls-io5-stereo-retrofit/
Great video! I have a 2018 Silverado 1500 single cab work truck model that I'm upgrading to a heated steering wheel and telescoping steering wheel but for the life of me I don't know which clock spring to buy , any suggestions?
Looks like it’s GM#84186645.... www.gmpartsdirect.com/auto-parts/2018/chevrolet/silverado-1500/ltz-trim/6-2l-v8-gas-engine/electrical-cat/air-bag-components-scat
Do you mean just the switch part? You might be able to find just the switch but the wheel won’t have a heating element. www.gmpartsdirect.com/oem-parts/gm-switch-23262287 www.gmpartsdirect.com/oem-parts/gm-switch-23262288
this was an amazing video tutorial man! I just want to verify, it should all be plug and play on 2014+ models correct? I thought on some forums I saw that the PCM needs to be programmed or something, but that doesnt make sense to me. Also, why is a new clock spring needed? GMpartsnow only has 1 clockspring for my 2014, curious why I have to replace.....or do I have to buy a different year clock spring? Thank you for your insight!
i figured out my question about the clock spring, it contains the plug for the heat, got it. Just need to verify if there are only 2 versions of clock springs. .....
Yes, should be plug and play, however some trucks didn’t get the wiring coming from the fuse block to the harness. Phil Gamboa makes a solution for this. Here is a link to Gmpartsdirect.com (Flow Chevrolet) for the clock spring..... www.gmpartsdirect.com/?year=&make=&model=&search_str=Clock+spring&p=catalog&mode=search&scat=&search_in=all And here is for the wheel.... www.gmpartsdirect.com/?year=&make=&model=&search_str=Steering+wheel&p=catalog&mode=search&scat=&search_in=all The heated wheel needs another circuit which passes through the clock spring in the column. A wheel without heat uses a clock spring with one less circuit.
I don’t know.i looked around for a minute and saw a few threads on the subject for Civics and CRVs. Find a Element forum and throw out the question.....might find exactly what you’re looking for.
Here is a question, is this possible with the 07-13 models? I want to upgrade to a newer wheel(14-18) and this would be ideal. I've watched both videos and seem possible with some slight wire changes on connection harnesses. Please, make that video :)
Interesting concept. We have a ‘12 Tahoe and have considered swapping to a Yukon Denali wheel with heat. Check out the GM-trucks.com forum. There is a dedicated sub-category for your body style and corresponding mods.
Curious if you tried this or not? We are upgrading a 1999 obs suburban and I found a forum to swap a couple vette wheel, but I would like to swap the heated steering wheel.
Hey there, sorry for the delayed response. I thought I responded immediately but it must not have gone through. Phil Gamboa makes everything you need for this Mod. Contact him at sales@harnessdr.com
They’re not fun, at least they’re visible. Some GMs have a little extra rubber there and it’s all by feel. The wheel was something like $250 and the wheel powers off with the ignition. If you don’t have the wiring, Phil Gamboa At harnessdr.com makes an OEM retrofit harness that plugs into the factory location on the left side of the dash.
I added the clock spring, and steering wheel, heated wheel doesn’t work, the fuse has power, the violet/white and black under the dash both show ground. What is missing?
Bob Warcimaga I spoke with Phil Gamboa the GM Wiring Guru and he says you’re likely missing the violet wire between the fuse and the plug which the clock spring plugs into. He sells a harness that will get you going. Shoot him a PM on GM-trucks.com www.gm-trucks.com/forums/profile/159655-pgamboa/
I'm wondering if the clockspring part number listed in the video supports collision alert? I need the clockspring to support heated steering wheel and collision alert (as well as the other controls that are normally present)
Unfortunately it does not. The defrost and everything else will pop on to whatever it was set to but the seats and wheel need to be turned on with the key.
I can look them up. What year, 1500 or HD, interior color? https:www.gmpartsdirect.com/ You can find the wheel under “steering” and the clock spring under “electrical” then “airbag components”
Regan Reed I think there might be two ways to do that, one is if you’re really good with a sewing needle and thread. And two is if you can remove the button on the right and replace it with a blank filler piece. I have seen the right hand side buttons for sale on eBay so I assume that they can be removed. www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/192664-wt-trim-with-color-dic-steering-wheel-controls-io5-stereo-retrofit/
I just bought a new 2019 GMC 1500 and was wondering if I could install this or would this void my warranty? Or would it be better if I had the GMC service department install it for me and keep my warranty? Any suggestions?
This was on the ‘14-‘18 1500 body style and the ‘15-‘19 HD body style so it’s not the same as the next gen style. Installing a heated wheel shouldn’t do anything to the warranty though.
Any mods done to your truck dont void the warranty. Google the Magnuson Moss Act. Dealers have to prove that your modification affected the damaged part that you are trying to get repaired under the warranty if they were to deny your warranty claim.
Wow, not really sure? I would start by removing the wheel and taking another look at the connector. Possibly a bad clock spring but likely a bad connection.
I would like to do this on my 2018 gmc Sierra 1500. Would you happen to know the part number for the clock spring? The one you show the part number for tells me it won't work.
Have you heard of anyone using the clock spring you have previously linked in other comments on a 2017 2500? I have bought the steering wheel already, so the clock spring is all I have left to order.
Tinkering Fox mines a 17 2500 chevy duramax LT. You’d think if the wheel is pretty much standard across most of the trucks the clock spring would be too but who knows
The clock spring is basically a swivel for your wires going into your steering wheel. It makes it so that your air bag and steering wheel controls work without any issues turning and bending them every time you drive. The new clock spring has another pair of wires to power the heating element.
Yes, wheel is 23423449. Clock spring is 23193463 Keep in mind that these numbers have likely been updated but should easily cross over on eBay, google, etc...
Just did this on my 2018 silverado. Was plug and play. Thank you!!. Just one question. The new heated wheel seems a hair smaller in diameter, across and grip wise... Anyone else?
@@Robbxmr Your truck is a 2018 1500 LT? And the clockspring you purchased is the 23381964, with no lights or error displays on your dash? I am about to order mine, but GM is confusing for the 2018 parts... It shows a "1st design" and a "2nd design" for the clock spring but doesn't show a difference between the two.
@@daltonfox725 the dealer had to do it vin specific. Although it is an '18, it was technically built at the end of '17. I guess there are slight changes from year to year. I didnt want to take a chance frying something so I had them pull up the correct one. And mine was plug and play cause I have power pedals and rear window, so the truck has the same wiring as the high country. And yes, '18 silvy 1500 lt z71 153".
