GMA SLAB REVIEW - Testing out GMA grading 

So watching through this, the slabs not being clear in order to see the card clearly is a very big issue for me. The number doesn't mean much if you can't verify it at least somewhat decently. I like the idea of the fitted sleeve in the slab, it feels like an extra measure of proctection. The corners, edges and picture are very important to me for the front. I agree with you, the back isn't as important in my opinion. It matters, just not as much to me. I'm not a huge fan of the half-grades but it makes sense if you want to grade the back just as harshly as the front. If the back isn't as much of a worry, I'd rather keep it to full grades only, at least for now. Overall, I'm not a big fan of GMA grading, it feels inconsistent. Some cards feel over-graded and others feel under-graded. Consistency is a HUGE part of grading because if people can see large differences in similarly graded cards and then a clearly worse card grade better, you're going to destroy your brand and people won't trust your service. Take your time, do it right.

FYI - both the labels & the slabs are new. The slabs actually glow under either UV or black light, I forget which but there's a video of it on GMA's Facebook.

This is a fantastic, informative video. Keep up the great content. I think all card graders do a great job, and it should hopefully even out the market. As a collector, I would be happy having any of my favorite cards being graded and encased. I don’t care if it’s SCG, PSA, CGC, HGA … you get the point. I think these slabs look sharp and professionally done.

I’ve had cards in the sleeve come loose in the shipping process, I always tightly wrap the card holder with a piece of printer paper now so it can’t slide out the top. Good idea when shipping singles.

question what shipping service do you have to use can i use usps or fed ex or do i have to use ups ?

I don’t mind the sleeve too much. So long as it’s a perfect fit sleeve and it’s on the card fully, I’ve seen some slabs in which the card is not fully inserted in the sleeve, and it makes it looks sloppy. Personally though I prefer without the sleeve, gives you a much more pure look at the card itself imo.

You will find that some of the cards are just cut poorly, if you look at the edges with a magnifier it's easy to tell. I first noticed it by examining theme deck cards and noticing jagged cuts.

Any chance you can speak out on what TwiceBakedJake recently made a PSA about in regards to sketchy grading card services? He made a video talking about getting offers from new grading services in which they would send the YT'er nice graded cards from the main/popular grading services in exchange for hyping them up, send him 9's/10's from the new service trying to be launched to make it look like the YT'er sent those cards in themself and got great grades, and even going as far as offering to send him fake receipts to make it look like those cards were the YT'ers and they submitted everything themself. He spoke out about it which was great, but if he's getting those offers I have to imagine others are as well and some are even taking their offers. I feel like you're trustworthy when it comes to this stuff, especially with your experience, so it would be really helpful to bring up the possible sketchiness when it comes to new grading services, what some of these new grading services are (possibly) up to, and which services are the best bets/why. Regardless, awesome video man!

I don’t think it matters about what you look at more. A grade is a quality rating of the card itself so it’s fair to grade front and back equally rather than what is seen more.

Think the micro scratches are from a poorly maid mold but might be wrong

If scan it all the sub grades will show and a picture of the card they took its pretty awsome

Honestly gma, cgc or sgc is the way for affordability and accuracy. Of course gma is cheapest slabs you can get with great labels, decent cases, and somewhat accurate grades

I'll still stick with SGC. I want to know the grade it says is the grade the card is. Nothing left to guess like with PSA.

You should try out MGC grading. They are a UK based grading company.

Some of the grades seemed really fair and some too generous. So a little inconsistency but nothing too drastic. Looks like the ‘less desirable’ cards are given a ‘softer’ grade because of its resale value. GMA obviously a little patriotic not grading Japanese cards which is a mistake on their part :/. In terms of grading in general I agree with the back of the card not having to look as good in terms of centering. It’s tricky when it comes down to white dots and imperfect corners though. How many whites dots knocks it down a grade? And how visible does a spot need to be in order for it to be a 9 rather than a 10. Should one tiny white spot on the back of the card with perfect centering on the front mean a card is 9 rather than 10? As much as I agree with not having half grades it starts to make sense why they have them. A 9 with slight off centering and two white dots on the back corners shouldn’t have the same grade as 9.5 which has perfect centering and one white dot on the back. So a 10 means perfect. I don’t know it’s so minute an error it’s hard to stamp a grade without contradicting a previous grade. Good luck mister!

Centering does not affect a cards mint status. If imperfect printing process affectes mint status would be no gray stamp 10

I think you have a much better eye for grading than GMA. They rarely hit the mark on any of these. I wouldn't trust them to grade bulk trash, and I definitely wouldn't purchase a card graded by GMA.

Psa is trash what are you talking about I had a psa 6 charizard cracked the slab sent it in again and it got a 9

Personally I don't like the sleave on the card... its another layer dulling the beautiful card and they tend to have micro scratches on them which again takes away from the card for me

I don’t like how the cards are in sleeves in the slabs, because the few I have it seems like they used old sleeves. You can clearly see scratches on the sleeve that’s not on the actual card so that erks me.

In early 2020 GMA cost $4 per card and turnaround was 14 days. Website currently says 150 days. Does anyone know how accurate that turnaround time is?

PSA, CGS, SGC, Beckett, CGC. That's my order I prefer to use. Wish every graduate company sucured the card in a sleeve before slab, nothing bothered me less than a card rattling around getting damaged. Shouldn't have to cost anything more... Also I have trouble grading with any company including GMA, if it doesn't increase my card value at all... I have plenty a beautiful cases myself 👍👌 I feel any card that is new, sharp corners they give a Gem MT 10 to, don't like it...

I think GMA is pretty sweet

I know it’s just a habit, but it’s really frustrating when people grade with other companies, and still refer to the grade as a “PSA 9, PSA 10, etc”.

I believe the approach your taking to judge a cards potential grade solely based off its centering may not be the pro way to go, I doubt PSA and even GMA with all those years of experience are missing those things due to poor eyesight. To me it seems the grading is built on a per card formula unique to each card that allows for a grading curve based on certain cards aesthetic. I would bet PSA would probably run about 5 tests before they ever even looked at the centering and would already have a formula for the card on how important the centering actually is to THAT card on its grading curve due to its border type, artwork, its peer cards average, and just how much the off centering actually effects the eye when you look at the card without looking for it. And probably assign an importance/allowance grade to certain aspects of cards that would say this ones border allowance is an 8.5 cause it only takes up 20% of the cards frame so if the centering scores higher than 8.5 it doesnt subtract from the 10 but instead makes it an auto gem mint. Imo that would seem to make more sense and be a less opinionated and true to the human eye approach to grading, as you said you a fan of well centered cards while thay doesn't seem to he he ultimate standard for ten with the top grader.. so maybe judging whether a cards lost a point on centering before really testing it and determining what your real qualifications for THIS exact card to be a 10 are. And if that starts with oh I see a millimeter more space over here I think that's missing it and is more an approach of looking for pristine. Obviously corners, edges, white spots, damage, and flaws should be pretty static but maybe centering is a little more of a "how much do you really notice it when your just looking at the card thing and not just looking at the centering". So maybe certain cards have preset formulas that already allow for a slight off centering without losing a 10...my best guess anyways.

Get it re graded by psa of your not haply with the 8 might get a 7 instead lol you need a magnifying glass to look at all the corned and the edges some damage is not visible to the naked eye it's not all bout centering. Thats just one of the things being graded, after all added and the average of all the separate grades (edge, corner, centering, scratches on surface and back) thats how you get your final score

Enjoyed the video. But please notify me if you ever work for a grading company. No offense, so I know not to send my cards there. Hahahaha!!! That's not a 8 that's a 6 for those white dots. That's not a 7 that's a 5. Man, you'd piss off alot of people from the videos I watch on RU-vid. But sweet cards. And after collecting for 30 years. I just finally sent in some cards for grading. And I went with GMA. They should be back in a couple of weeks. Let's see how my reaction will be...:)

As I pause the video:it's mint or it's not. PSA sells plastic nothing more. PSA is not the standard just was thought of as it. The .5 grade is an example to you that they sell plastic. So basically lower than 7 should just be authenticated. Does it really matter after you go below a 7. I've been dealing with the cards for five years now. Seen 10 with defect from PSA personally one of mine. Constantly damage cards send bad slabs to ppl.
