Tom Gleeson tells you all the reasons not to go to CAIRNS. Tell us where we should go next. More from The Weekly Subscribe: bit.ly/WeeklyRU-vid Facebook: bit.ly/WeeklyFacebook Twitter: bit.ly/WeeklyTwitter
We have lived in Cairns for 10 years and I do agree with Gleeson on most of it. My sister recently here from NSW, so we went on Skyrail and after 5 minutes she said 'how long does this last' - totally unimpressed. She did other trips too, Port Douglas, the 'live' reef. Well the upshot of her visit was 'seen it once' - twice would be like watching paint dry.
Cairns was a stunning little city about 50 years ago. Then someone decided to make it 'better' and do tourism. It's an utter shocker. Everything destroyed that was once beautiful. In fact, that goes for Mossman, Port Douglas and all the beaches from Cairns to those desinations as well. This was, not long ago, fairly pristine, certainly Mossman Gorge was simply glorious. Utterly hideous now with the bus loads of totally disinterested tourists 'on tour' and the garbage they now call a harbour in Cairns. Horrible. Never going back. Did my head in seeing the wholesale destruction in the name of making gratuitous dollars.
The quality was fine the first go around I still laughed my ass off the first time as much as the second! So it didn't matter to me! I absolutely love this guy!
As a Victorian, as Southern winter starts to bite and energy heating costs go through the roof, we start to fantasise about life in warm, beautiful tropical paradises up north, like Cairns. I thought I might one day get there. But, forget it now. My illusions have all been shattered. Ah well, better put on my woollen beanie hat and scarf and gloves. Looks like more rain and the temperature is falling. Gonna be another cold one tonight... No Backpackers come here to be picked up for a quick lay. Too bloody cold and hard...
Annemarie May - It’s beautiful here. Port Douglas over-rated. Palm Cove is gorgeous. This video is just for a laugh. You should come here. I’m from Victoria, and have now been here for 14 years. I moved back to Vic last year for family, I only lasted 6 months and now I’m back in Cairns and love it even more. 💜
Annemarie May I live on the Sunshine Coast and it has it all, beaches, mountains, ticks all the boxes.....aside from those negatives he spoke of, North Queensland has some of the most beautiful rainforests, tropical fruits, blue water and reef that is second to none, yes there are crocs and stingers and hot weather but it’s so beautiful, the reef will regenerate and you can’t help but appreciate the beauty. where I live ticks all the boxes as well but unfortunately is unaffordable to live and has developed into a very clicky place, I loved living up north and I wouldn’t cross it off your list, you just have to get used to the heat :)
I'm from Melbourne and I must say that the Daintree is beautiful and well worth visiting. Cairns ain't so bad, it just doesn't have a good beach to draw in heaps of tourists.
Aviation Mohamed I’ve been here for about 12 years and bloody hate it :) I was born here, sort of have no choice, I live in Kuranda most of my days though haha
I know this is supposed to be sarcastic. But I live in cairns and, well... It's all quite true. The only good thing Cairns is a place for is snake-like businessmen from down south to own a shop up here and rip people off.
He's not funny like the idiot abroad . I'm a local and take it as a joke . If anyone really thinks this is a shithole then you need help and moving to a padded cell along with this fake twat .
I like Gleeson, he is hilarious, I love a bit of dark humour and really hate to be a buzz kill but is there seriously anything funny about the dead reef and the fact that we are loosing one of our seven natural wonders of the world? A shame your kids won't have a reef to laugh about. Bit tastless Tom...
