Go Offline with Google Maps for Android 

I'm 8 years late, but I use this and helped my family get out of trouble TWICE using Offline Maps when we were in the woods and mountains camping and there was no reception! Apparently, I was the only one who knew about this feature in my family. Thanks, Google!

So useful. In Hong Kong it's too expensive to get mobile internet on prepaid sim cards. As a tourist here, the offline mode is very helpful

that function was there "before" too ... it was in labs (cache of 10 miles)

google never ceases to amaze me, whether if its a product feature or how they advertise it to us. Its just so effective!

You word have to update the app to get the feature I think. And GPS covers the whole earth, including forests and oceans. It's the data network connection that is usually not available in isolated places.

We have been using these features for last 2-3 years in our Nokia phones and those maps come with the voice guided navigation. Nothing can beat Nokia in mapping solutions. Try it and you would feel the same.

yeah Google is something which updates and facilitates destination reacheable in time without seeking directions from the locals !!! Kudos !!!!!

It saves all zoom levels of cartographic map - no photographic map If you choose larger area it shows you how many MB of memory you have to download. Pretty cool

Not without internet access, but you can use your GPS offline and it will show you where you are on your offline maps. If you can use the directions feature BEFORE you go and have internet access, that way you can refer back to the direction track later when you are offline and the blue line should still be there to see. But in a nutshell this is simply an electronic map that syncs with your GPS.

this video looks very good it makes me feel like i should down load this app to my phone but i did not see any thing about the cost or what is involved in going about down loading the app or how it works thank you very much for giving me a chance to view some of how it works

It works in my (small) country ... but only in the countryside, if you zoom in a larger urban area it will just say "Offline maps is not available in selected area" and if you zoom out it will say "Part of the area will not be saved". Google, change this now (not too long ago, you could precache everything - they must have done this on purpose)

I love how they dropped Google Maps for their own service, then all the stuff they announce, Gmaps can already do. But I'm sure when apple do it, they'll do it right.

How do you think people got around with a paper map? By writing their destination on the paper?

yes as a beta product.... its not out of beta and for official use. I used the offline maps while in japan last year. It was GREAT!!! No data required, full google maps.

I saved an offline map for a camping and hiking trip and all the local streets were there. Unfortunately all the trails and points of interest that I plotted in "My Places" were available in a layer all the way until I lost service then it went away. Luckily I set a few rudimentary favorites in OsmAnd. If I had relied on Google Maps for Android, all would have been lost.

In September 2012, Latvia offline was available, I used a lot there, why now not anymore? I need it...

I wonder how many GB it'd be to download the maps of the entire world since it seems you can only download a tiny section at a time.

when saving the map offline, how many zoom levels does it store ?

You can download maps for offline use. Still the navigation app doesn't seem to work without internet connection so you have to manually navigate yourself.

I think Navigation is available now w/o a data plan.

Since what maps version, what android version, and for which countries?... not working for me.

ITS A HUGE PROBLEM if your traveling in another country as a tourist because you usually dont want international data roaming fees. if you have to wait to find your next internet cafe its usually not convenient at that point, unless you dont speak the language. eitherway downloadable city options would be a nice FEATURE FOR GOOGLE.

Just to clarify for everyone... you download an area to be available offline, then you can use it like a normal paper map book OR you can use it with your GPS to know exactly where you are.

When this was at Labs I could use it really well in Brazil, but now my country isn't supported anymore to use this feature... why?

not lumia, but older "Symbian" nokia phones. esp 5800XpressMusic but hey, now you can use softwares like "Sygic" for androids for an offline GPS

i would guess worldwide, i have the updates for maps and streetview in the uk.

if you include the Terrain view, only map view isnt that much heavy

this stopped working in spain from last update. Today's one is the same, no offline maps for spain :( and we could do it before

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Nokia has, Symbian, Belle, and Windows Ovi Maps, lets you save the entire country's map on your Phone (takes up space) for offline usage, and lets you search things like the Name of a Store or hospital, (if you don't live in fixed street-named Countries) Navfree world for Android also does that, but for a few European countries, (and you can only search street names or Junctions, no shop names included) GoogleMaps lets you save , a very tiny part of a country

Why was i unable to download Budapest? London and some other cities are easy to download. Is it country related?

Offline maps seem to disappear after a reboot.

That's the point of saving it offline, so you can see the map when you DON'T have connection

The availability is limited to certain countries and unfortunately Hungary is not on their list. Neither is Thailand. :(

so it means that in offline you'll lose precision and accuracy thus they travel big circle in order to get that restaurant? :p

how can Navigation be provided offline? Navigation depends on the current position of the user and calculating the shortest route and providing him with the direction,if the feedback isnt send via internet how is it even possible ?

What's the benefit of off-line map when you can't find an address while being offline. You MUST have connection to find an address in Google Maps.

And the lite version of "iOff" will only take up a small 7.86 gig of storage space.

Now if they will make whole countries available, I can be a happy downloading man.

Not that new feature, they had it in google maps labs for a long time. I like OSMAND+ for offline maps much more.

To use like a normal map book OR to sync with your GPS and know exactly where you are.

Googles database for maps is like thousands of terabytes and thats not including all the street views and 3D maps they have.

It's not navigation. It is a map. Same as the old paper maps, remember them? But you can save certain cities on your phone and away you go. Of course it won't tell you where to walk or drive, so you might have to read a sign or two and use your brain.

Admit it, when you saw this you opened Maps for the first time.

About time!! What every other navigator has been able to since the very beginning! - They must finally have collected sufficient statistics - and realized they've reached a saturation level. Where it is no longer worth the bandwidth to record *every* location *every* android user has *ever* looked at. Diminishing returns...

Not really, the point is, the GPS doesn't need a connection, you click on the map and you get it instantly loaded without a connections. Yes it isn't navigation, it's just an offline MAP. That's what it's called anyways.
