Good question . I just work with words that relate to the song's concept for example - backstabbing - when you think of being backstabbed you throw words in there like friendship, lying , fighting , truth - and in doing that lyrics to the song are born . The shorter the song the easier it is to create lyrics.

Its a combination of different things - I use a BC rich bass with EMG pick ups , powered by two Peavey bass amps - one 800 watts another 250 watts connected by a y connection then through a sovtek tank distortion pedal and a generic brand chorus pedal . It takes a bit of time to figure out the sound and playing live is sometimes a nightmare because technical problems.

@paregorik Yes , but it depends on what sound you want . You can try every available distortion pedal on the market or build your own but big muff guitar distortion pedal is probably the best. Theres Boss orange distortion -01 but the gain isn't enough esp. if your using a large wattage amplifier, say about 200 watts. I haven't heard of the odb3 or the Ibanez phathead but I like what I heard from the Ibanez tube screamer.

Just turn up the gain on the distortion pedal and tweek the chorus pedal levels . May take some time to tweek the right levels to get it . You can get this sound on any amp.

@paregorik You can use any distortion pedal. I haven't used a bass only big muff so not sure if the gain would be good. Guitar big muffs are better me thinks. The sovtek model big muff is probably the best , not the black pedal , the olive green version gives the best gain .

@godstomper I use the boss bass overdrive. I fuckin love it too cause it gives it more of a "buildings toppling" sound rather than a "chainsaw battery" sound. I don't know jack about high-ends and low ends and mids. :( I just play loud :D

Its the EMG pick ups, Russian built Green Sovtek distortion pedal and the chorus pedal . If you have those your bass sound will be like this.

I use a generic brand Harepch chorus pedal . You can buy em cheap for 20.00 It works good , makes the bass riff faster.

i'm not sure wether to use boss bass distortion or my big muff for stuff like this. see you're using the muff how are you set up? all i ever get is fuzzy stoner type tones. maybe need to play a bit more.

+Scott Melrose Its a bit more complicated my friend. I'm going through emg bass pickups that give you better gain sound than say a generic jazz style pick ups plus the bass has a three channel treble selector with high gain thats going through a peavy mark 46 bass amp and then going through a sovtek big muff russian series distortion pedal and a generic brand chorus pedal . I'd use both pedals at the same time and see what happens.

Oh you know what , I googled it and now remember it was made in the 90's under harepch which was making discount cheap effects pedals for guitar center for 19.00 and its discontinued. If you go to any used instrument store just buy the cheapest chorus pedal you can find , don't pay more than 30.00 for it.

Use very heavy distortion pedal, like the mxr "fullbore metal" destortion pedal or use 2 distortion pedals (maybe a chorus too) at the same time. anyways you can you use 2 guitar amps at the same time, like this: /watch?v=B7oDQAyig4Y

How do you prevent the notes from becoming indistinct sludge when you're playing power chords on the low strings? Is it just the distortion sucking out the low end that otherwise turns it to mush?

I would recommend a chorus pedal along with a boost pedal to give more distinctive sound to the distortion when playing on a low tuned bass. Im talking proper dropped tuning like Drop D tuning. So it be D A D G. Pick ups make a major sound improvement as well. I use active EMG pick ups with three way switch selectors. Your bass should sound like a tuned buzz saw

@@godstomper Oh, so the Chorus is actually for getting that metallic ringing sound, not just as modulation for the sake of it. So it is all about getting more treble going. While I'm here, I must ask: is this the channel of the actual band Godstomper or just a fan?

@@noesunyoutuber7680 the chorus pedal is to speed up modulation of the treble on the distortion, basically it raises the pitch of the bass sound so you can get a distinctive bass tone on really low strings. Ya this is the official Godstomper channel run by the band.

Two man bands are easier than 4 or 5 man bands . We don't have problems with moving equipment but you get tired quick if you have 10 minutes to set up and 5 minutes to breakdown equipment after the set.

Actually its more hardcore punk riff tuning than death metal but I think more of the current bands are using death metal tuning.

I'm planning on writing a joke PV EP just to prove how brainless this genre is sometime in the next few years, and wasn't too sure exactly what to do, especially since you can't hear the bass worth a damn on any "good" PV recordings as they're jumbled in with the guitar in an unholy amalgamation of muddled fuck. Needless to say I was wholeheartedly assured I didn't have to worry about things like technicality or theory when I could just slap on all 4 strings simultaneously like a drunken ape. Cheers, and be sure to look out for CG Rhino, the next best PV one man band!
