Took my husband, my son and a friend of his to see Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color over the weekend. First time for the three of them and we were all blown away. The black-and-white makes it more terrifying from an action standpoint but also more melancholy dramatically. Thanks Dan! -- Christy

Saw Minus One 5 times in color, but was REALLY blown away after seeing Minus Color. I can’t recommend this movie enough, because as you said, it connects with the audience on a human level. This is a movie for people who scoff at the idea of crying at a Godzilla movie.

I saw Godzilla in color twice (once in IMAX and the other standard) and just today in black & white. So good either way. Puss n Boots: Last Wish was my favorite movie for 2022 and now Godzilla Minus One for 2023. I do wonder what my favorite will be for 2024. Right now it is the Godzilla Minus One Minus Color.

I’m really happy for Godzilla. I saw it twice during its regular run and saw it again this weekend and I brought someone who saw it for the first time and my friend loved it. It really is an amazing movie.

I saw Godzilla Minus One twice. The second time, I brought my wife who has never seen another Godzilla movie. She loved it. She said it was a "near perfect film." Really a special movie that transcended the typical Godzilla audience.

Crammed in the Holdovers, American Fiction, and Godzilla -1, -C on Monday. Really took advantage of Regal unlimited, and that re-fillable popcorn bucket they introduced. Also no upcharge on Godzilla to see in RPX. Minus dinner, whole day cost 9.72 for three films and concessions. I was worried my theater wouldn't get 'American Fiction', they had theaters down for repairs for a while.

Honestly I highly doubt it’s an accessibility thing- studios just don’t think it’s necessary to spend the extra money so people can have an optimal viewing experience.

Great to see Oscar nominated Godzilla Minus One (Minus Color) get that 1,516 Theater expansion for a $2.7m 9th wkend, $55.1m domestic & $102.7m worldwide on its reported $15m budget. Incredible that Wonka has outperformed the near $1bn Oppenheimer in 2 traditionally big markets of the UK & Mexico! Good to see American Fiction doing well following its Oscar Noms.

There is just a swath of information to parse through, so I can't begin to imagine how much planning and time videos like these take for you. I will say it's a severely underrated form of content and so I really appreciate it. Also, going to see GM1MC tonight, loved the color release last month and can't wait to find things I missed during the first viewing.

Dan, the holds of the top 5 movies were impressive. Do you know if the average hold set a record? I am guessing for it to be a record, you'd have to average the percentages rather than add up the underlying dollar totals. That's because there were weeks when high-grossing films had very good holds that would overwhelm lower-grossing films with normal to bad holds. But since I've been watching your shows, I've never seen a week where a 40% drop was the lowest hold of the week.

Minus One is definitely resonating with audiences in the West, though I can't help but feel like it got screwed for the Best International Film Oscar due to its release date (no shade to Perfect Days tho). The eligibility for submissions ended in October (weirdly) and Godzilla came out in early November in Japan. There's also a rule apparently saying that films submitted in a previous year for other awards are ineligible for Best International award... so this year's VFX nom effectively rules out a solid submission for Japan at NEXT year's International award.

The submission deadline is in October, but the submission to the Oscars can be released as late as November 30 in its country of origin (per Oscar rules). My guess is that either the movie wasn't ready or Japan just wasn't expecting it to be as popular as it is. The reason the submission deadline is so early is that a preliminary committee watches all of the submissions, amounting to dozens of movies, to generate a shortlist of 15 films, which is then whittled down to five nominees. That process takes time, necessitating an earlier submission deadline.

@@DanMurrellMovies Thanks for the reply! I'm fairly certain that the November 30th deadline was LAST year's rule as the range was Jan 2022 - Nov 2022. In keeping with that 11-month range, THIS year's eligibility was from Dec 2022 - October 31st 2023 (according to a current PDF I'm reading on the oscars' site). Which implies that next round is gonna deadline on September 30th for the 97th oscars. And if they keep up this 11-month window, it's gonna comically scoot back each year by a month haha In any case I'm glad to know the submission deadline is early enough for a committee to aptly watch all they need to and assess properly. I have a feeling that other award shows of longer mediums (emmys, game awards) don't possibly allocate sufficient time to catch up on lengthy tv shows/videogames!

Hey Dan, love your show, thanks for all you do introducing sense into the crazy world of movie marketing! As a fellow numbers and statistics man myself I Just wanted to point out that the fact that most award movies come out between October and December doesn't necessarily mean there is an advantage towards award nomination to these release dates. It could be a reverse causality, that studios prefer to release movies that are award contenders at that time of year because they think the awards season could contribute to those movies' sales if the award talks around the movies happen still during their theatrical run.

The correlation between fall release and Oscar nomination might be mixing up cause and effect. It could just be that there are much more awards plays that are released then, and because there are more movies to choose from that are released then, there are more nominations.

that awards season question sounds like a self-fulfilling prophecy. of course if the oscar bait movies are more often released during this season, the nominees/winners will come from this release window as well. if suddenly the studios decided to release all their oscar bait movies in, say, April, then this would become the new oscar season.

Fighter even though #1 underperformed heavily in India. It's sad to see when A Great quality movie about A new genre(Aerial Action) made in India, it underperformed, even with a Top Star and Director collaboration. Hope it becomes popular enough through TV and streaming, so that the planned sequel being made.

When I was working on my MFA in creative writing at a low-res program in Nebraska, I put on movie nights using our digital projectors, but during one residency, one of the visiting writers was part of the writers guild and was an Oscar voter, and he brought his screeners for that year, so we watched No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Juno, and Diving Bell and the Butterfly (an beautiful movie that feels forgotten these days), and they came on DVD and I don't remember the watermarks harming the experience, but obviously that was over 15 years ago. I think Juno was terribly overrated (I felt it was a really simple, predictable story with an interesting character/performance and not much else), but damn, it was an amazing experience to watch those films in a conference room full of writers.

I think Anyone but You deserves a more in depth box office analysis. Regardless of how people feel about the movie it’s now achieved the highest multiplier of all films wide released in 2023 earning 12 times its opening weekend which is very rare and should be explored on your show.

On the subject of screeners, my brother used to receive screeners in the mail because he was a member of the WGA. That makes sense, except my brother wasn't a writer. He was a comment moderator for the Huffington Post. When the moderators voted to unionize, they became members of the WGA. Why the WGA wanted non-writers in their union, I couldn't say. When the Huffington Post laid off all its writers and replaced them with an AI about 7 years ago, he was no longer a member of the WGA. He would still get screeners for a while, but eventually they stopped coming. Did the Huffpo experience cause the WGA to be so concerned about AI? Besides screeners, the major benefit the WGA gave my brother was probably the 6 months of severance that he received. Somehow, I doubt Verizon, then the owner of the HuffPo, would have been quite so generous if there was no union involved.

The statistical pool is alittle biased cuz people who make oscar type movies tend to release them at the end of the year which skews the numbers. The end of the year doesnt have a lot of oscar nominees because its the ideal time of the year necessarily but because thats when oscar nominee type movies traditionally release themselves. I dont know if i explained that correctly i only took like 2 stats clases 😅

"Nomadland" release window is WAY different from "Everything Everywhere All at Once", the latter had to endure more than a year in the voters' mind while the former had to be only a couple of weeks. So, sure, technically was released on January, but January, in that ocassion, was still "Awards Season", that is really different from "Holiday Season"/"Later Quater of the year", both just happen to be on the same months.

They're the top five movies at the box office and were all major studio releases that were heavily promoted. It may just be that the ad money didn't go to places that you watch/visit.
