As an Asian myself, these racists made me tear up a little bit. I can’t believe a real person would actually say such things to anyone.

I had an interesting experience with my family when we went to Puerto Rico just this last September for a short vacation. While we were there, there were two separate instances of--I think they were both waiters/waitresses, one time in a Korean restaurant--assuming our ethnicity and asking if we were Chinese. We'd smile and let them know that we're not, and once clarified that we were, in fact, Korean. I imagined their initial assumption is likely because asian countries besides China are either at a peripheral of, or simply not present in their minds when making their comment, and this video and the discussions below reminded me of that. That leads me to wonder if some portion of encounters considered racist might be a product of simple ignorance by one of the other's culture; the offending party doesn't mean offense, they are trying to relate and have a conversation, but they need to be shown that they might not be taking the right approach. If I were to sit down with a someone and ask them if they, "are Mexican," then they'd be justified in taking offense and responding curtly that they are from Micronesia. However, if I were to, "inquire about their ethnicity", simply by using a broader statement, they'd answer right away, and we can get to talking about the good stuff, like their food and what social norms they have in their culture, what kind of music they have, and their general interests, because this person is a person, not their culture. I like... Sitting down with someone and asking about their interests, their lives. Oftentimes, ethnicity is never even brought up while she tells about growing up in the rink and competing in the nationals, or when he's telling me that he's pushing through the last year of his college education, or the nice lady I saw at Ross that one time is informing my cuzzie and I that her puppy was not a husky, that he's half malamute and half something else... And I informed her that I love him and he is the cutest thing I've seen all day. Be respectful y'all, that's all this tangential 10PM messay boils down to.
