I read this chapter as saying Jon isn't observant at all. He's an insecure, jealous teenager. Everything he thinks he notices is just a reflection of his own insecurity. "noticing the truth behind people's eyes" is just his way of saying "I know you all hate me secretly, you're just not saying it" Even his appreciation of being allowed to drink wine is, ironically, just sour grapes.

I would disagree with some of your takes. I usually see this scene mentioned in the community as an example of an unreliable narrator. The smoke is stinging Jon's eyes because he's starting to cry, but not being honest to himself. He's bitter all evening. Thats why he trys to tell himself he's lucky being where he is. The words "he told himself" are literally used when he feeds ghost. With this in mind I'd reevalue his statements on mycella. He's insulting her probably because he's bitter. So we shouldnt take this observation as redconned or weird fact. Edit: also in regard to Tyrion being more insecure in future chapters. I think thats not abandoned. You said it well, its easier said than done to make ones weakness his armor. I always read his character in the way, that he's trying to follow this guidline, but fails at times. Which every character in ASOIAF does. Everyone fails their own principles.

Myrcella isn’t “dull”. Jon thinks Myrcella is dull. And she probably isn’t doting over Robb. That’s just how Jon sees it because he is jealous of Robb’s status. Surely Jon’s actual age has to be the same as his purported age. Catelyn would’ve noticed if the baby Ned brought back wasn’t the right age. Daeron being 18 when he died could also be foreshadowing. Maybe in the original timeline, Jon was supposed to “die” at 18.

@@mysteryboxe9230 And as I said in another comment, that’d actually be an interesting place to start his character, that like Tyrion, he vastly overestimates his own intelligence but upon coming to the Night’s Watch, he discovers that he actually doesn’t know people as well as he thinks he does and has to learn how to understand them properly instead of thinking he does. But when he pretty much gets everyone right except Myrcella, why do we jump to “he’s a dumb kid who doesn’t know what he’s talking about” when this whole chapter is meant to show that indeed, Jon does know precisely what he’s talking about? If he was consistently judging people wrong here, I’d say this was the correct take. But when we’re only saying this because of Myrcella’s changed personality in later books, I just can’t agree.

On the topic of Jon's abandoned observation skills in Dance, I wonder if it's more that there's simply too much for him to pay attention to as part of leading/governing that naturally things like a conspiracy against him go unnoticed. Jon can't have a thousand eyes and one, like Bloodraven (and Bran). Given that his story in Dance is about losing sight of the Watch's duty in favor of getting increasingly involved in outside politics, I wonder if it's less of a retcon and more of a conscious choice on George's part. It's ironic that his opening scene emphasizes his perceptiveness while at the same time showing him getting drunk. If he actually is drunk on strongwine at the end of Dance, it is a great parallel to the start of his story, but also an apt metaphor for how he has become intoxicated by power.

It’s “Big Fish in a Small Pond”. Jon thought he was so observant and smart while he was in his own house dealing with his own family issues but out in the real world he is just a decent 15yo kid. Jon's comments about Myrcella read to me as Jon being extremely judgmental rather than any true insight about Myrcella's character. Also Robb grinning like an idiot might not be related to Myrcella's looks but rather because it's a big feast and he gets to make a grand entrance with the princess in front of the King and Queen. While Jon has been described as observant multiple times now (hence we can assume that George meant for this to be an actual character trait for Jon at this point), we should keep in mind that he's very drunk and secretly harboring a lot of resentment in this scene for being treated different than his siblings. The first lines of this chapter sound very much like he's coping. No, Jon doesn't think it's great to be bastard in this moment, and him excessively drinking is a classic coping strategy to numb himself. His anger at Benjen for calling him "son" pretty much proves all this. He's not mad at Ben for not immediately letting him join the Watch, but instead mad at the world for making him a lowly bastard, with no certain place in the world.
@Longshanks1690

The point about holdfasts is already something of a contradiction. What I think George means is that there are mini-castles or wooden forts dotted around Stark lands used to station men, supplies, food, horses, etc in order to maintain effective control of the region. Keep in mind that even for a minor Lord, the lands they oversee are vast and you can’t rule all that from one castle alone, they need additional garrisons to keep the King’s peace. And when we get to the major lords like the Starks, this is even more true. So it’s not that these are separate lands, they’re part of the lands that come with being the Lord of Winterfell but since the Lord can’t be everywhere at once, he appoints people to oversee holdfasts in other places he rules to make sure he’s actually in control of the North. This is what the second sons can hope to inherit and rule over in Ned and then Robb’s name. So it actively doesn’t make any sense that Jon thinks he stands to inherit nothing. 😂 If Jon does know that these halfway points exist, then he has absolutely no reason to think Ned wouldn’t give him one of his own when he comes of age, there is precisely zero reason a bastard couldn’t hold one of these in his father or trueborn brother’s name. You don’t even need the Dream for Spring plotline, which only complicates things further, the holdfasts that already exist in the North should be enough proof for Jon that he can serve House Stark without going to the Wall. And yet not only Jon but everyone around him thinks his only option is the Wall. Not even that he should be sent to one of these holdfasts while Ned is away then he might return when his family does so Cat doesn’t have to look at him, tell the 14yo to give up everything now. If I’m right that this is what George means by holdfasts, this is such an error in worldbuilding. 😂

It isn’t everyone though. Maester Luwin lies to remove Jon from Winterfell for Catelyn. Luwin tells him Jon wants to go to the wall anyway, and furthermore that Benjen had spoken to him and he was in favour of the idea. But when you return to Jon’s chapter where he asks Benjen directly about joining the watch, we find he is not in favour of Jon joining and lists several reasons why he shouldn’t join the watch. But it is Luwin stating this lie which makes Ned believe Benjen was in favour of Jon going there. So he lied to Ned to get rid of Jon because his loyalty is to Catelyn first over Ned.

Honestly that’d be a really funny plot point if it was consistent. That like Tyrion, Jon prides himself on his intelligence and ability to read people, but as on as he gets on the wall he finds he doesn’t really understand people at all - he knows nothing you might even say - and has to learn to see people on their level. But aside from Myrcella, Jon gets everyone else exactly spot on, so it clearly wasn’t intentional. If he looked at Cersei and said no one could smile that beautiful and be evil, that’d be one thing, but he can see through her smiles but can’t see Myrcella? It’s clearly just a retcon of Myrcella’s character by George when he wanted to make her more of a personality in contrast to Tommen.

If Rheagar kidnaps (runs away with whatever) with lyana before Brandon or Rickard Stark die, then Jon should be born well before Robb. For the ruse to work, it must not be too long so that Catelyn could believe Robb was older. With Jon thinking that Bran and Rickon have futures, but Jon doesn't... some of this probably comes down to the iffy worldbuilding GRRM has in AGoT (no weirwoods south of the Neck, royal marriages easily set aside, etc.) In the same breath, Jon thinks that Sansa and Arya will marry southron lords not northerners, which is also kinda retconned - later in the series, as GRRM fleshed out more lesser Houses and family trees, it becomes most common for brides and grooms to come from the same kingdom. If I had to justify it... though Jon explicitly mentions only holdfast, there's a wider range of options available for Bran and Rickon? Bran harbors kingsguard aspirations, and that is absolutely not an option Ned would let Jon pursue, because Ned wants to keep Jon away from KL and Robert? So if Jon ever voiced a desire to join the kingsguard and Ned shut it down without explanation, that might make Jon assume that other opportunities like ruling a holdfast would be denied to him. Its a justification that doesn't really draw on the text, and is kinda retconned by the dream for spring idea, but it still kinda fits?

I dont think Jon being observant is a dropped plot point but his ego/coping mechanism, he might not be true born but bastards grow up quicker, he gets to see the real world, he gets to drink as much as he wants,he notices things others don't and same reason he is dismayed by Joffery being taller than him, these are just things Jon tells himself when the voice inside says he's not as important or loved as the other children, "I don't care, why would I even wanna sit with them, they're stupid anyways" People do it all the time and I think that you see less of it in later chapters is a sign of Jon growing as a person and accepting reality.

Sometimes lands that were held would be divided up between the children. It's conceivable that the Starks control more 'holdfasts' other than Winterfell. Jon being older than Robb does not out Ned as not being Jon's father; that would only be the case if Lyanna was Jon's father. Jon may be the child of Ashara Dayne. I suspect that part of the reason Cat hated Jon is because she suspected that Jon was born before Robb, a love child between Ned and Ashara. Ned was foisted upon Cat after Brandon was murdered; Ned never expected to become lord of Winterfell. Cat, who always felt like an uninvited, unwelcome intruder in the Winterfell godswood, may suspect that Ned and Ashara eloped in front of a heart tree before she had married Ned by the faith of the seven, and that heart break is what drove Ashara to suicide. BTW, I have a joke inspired by the differences between characters in the book and the show: After becoming king, why did Bobby B grow such a rich, full beard?

I have some thoughts on the "retcons" I think this Jon reads as an arrogant 14 y/o boy and feels like he "deserves" more, and he's obviously jealous of Robb, who gets to escort the princess and sit at the high table and all that. His astute powers or observation and memory isn't really a "forgotten character trait" it's just him being full of himself, a lot of his character changes after Donal Noye speaks to him and he learns that he's kind of a dick. And as far as bastards not getting anything, that's mostly what he's been told all of his life by Catelyn, he doesn't have the omnipotence the readers do to know of all these bastards in high positions. Benjen even says "Hey look kid it's not as bad as you think." Sure there's the gift thing but that's not like, guaranteed.

I always thought that Rob is older because Ned had to have impregnated Cat during their nuptials (iirc he stayed a fortnight at Riverrun before heading back off to the war) and she had him before the end of the war. She had to wait at RR with baby Robb until she received the "all clear" to head up to Winterfell, and when she arrived, Ned was already there with baby Jon and the wet-nurse. I think Robb and John are only separated by a few weeks, maybe a month. As we don't know if John or Robb came early or late. But enough time had to have passed for Ned to have fathered a bastard, and for that baby to be born. Unless of course, Ned had done so prior to marrying Cat. I really hope we get some clarification on the timelines in a future book. I've also heard the theory that maybe Cat was already pregnant with Brandon's baby (but not showing) and passed off baby Robb as Ned's, and that's part of the reason she hates John so much as he's a constant reminder of her lie. The irony being that John is publicly known to be a bastard, but is secretly legit if L+R were married, while Robb is publicly known as Ned's trueborn son but is secretly Brandon's bastard.

Tyrion is a genetic chimera, Tywin and Aerys are both his father, that explains the eyes and hair color-- "Indications of tetragametic chimerism include eyes differing in colour, patchwork skin coloration, and ambiguous external genitalia, which is a sign of hermaphroditism (having both male and female reproductive organs)." And Tyrion was rumored to be a hermaphrodite. A Chimera is half dragon, half lion, half goat, and it has a tail. And Satyrion means "like a satyr" which explains Tyrion's satyr/bacchanalian disposition. In Gaelic tuirginn means "a broad, squat person" And on page 927 of Dwelly's Gaelic, are a bunch of Targaryen words, tairgireadh = "prophecy, promise" and tairgeagh means "Imp" and Tir Tairngire means "the Land of Promise, the Otherworld" which is Valyria/Valinor --the Land of Always Summer, and the Land Beneath the Waves. And in Lord of the Rings, Tirion was a floating island adjacent to Valinor.

I thought it was mentioned that he was conceived during his and Cat's wedding (or right after) while Jon would've been conceived afterwards on campaign. He could be older because of R+L=J but to the average person I think Robb would be considered older. Also maybe Jon would think that Cat would prevent Ned's move to give Jon his own holding out of fear of future conflict so he sees the Watch as the only option.

Love your content. Just wondering, this isn't the first time I've heard you mention Ned's dream for spring where he "planned" to give Jon a holdfast or something. That isn't how I interpreted that conversation at all. As far as I could tell, Ned planned to make new lords in The Gift, yes, but there is zero indication that anything would go to Jon. That's Jon's own internal speculation/hope. As far as the text itself goes, I don't see any reason to believe that Ned had explicitly planned for Jon to be one of these new lords, so it shouldn't affect Jon's motivation to join the watch much, if at all. Am I missing something?

I thought about this recently, but if you take the meaning to be that the younger boys will eventually marry the daughters of bannermen in the north, this only raises the question of why Benjen was on the wall. And from what we can tell he joined after the deaths of his parents and Brandon, so a second-in-line son going to the wall in the midst of a chaotic time seems odd. And if he went without Eddard's leave,there would be some lingering issues and possible coldness between them... it would be odd for him to be invited down for Robert's visit.
@myrabeth77

Benjen taking the black when he did is really, really odd. At the time he made that decision, Ned's entire line of succession was baby Robb and Benjen. Infant and child mortality in their world isn't especially low. Prior to the creation of spare sons, Benjen taking himself out of the line is a very risky, very dumb idea. It makes me wonder if Ben took the black to make amends for something, something serious enough that those amends were seen as a higher priority than protecting the Stark line. Perhaps he knew exactly where Lyanna was? Or some other secret of hers he should have revealed, but chose not to?

I think what GRRM had in mind is to have Jon "win" the throne, have every right to have the throne - birth right and maybe conquer right, and to refuse it in the end and in other words "be glad he is just a bastard". Would love to know what you think about that!

Here’s a big logic hole: in discussion on previous chapters we acknowledged how little sense giving the foreword pups to the kids is. Yet, why didn’t they at least think to neuter the male pups. The worst part of letting the pups live is that they will breed with each other and create a direwolf population that will permanently live south of the wall

The biggest lorehole in ASOIAF that ive never seen anyone talk about is the calendar. How do people know the date, and know things like birthdays if the seasons take 10 years? How do they know when seasons change? Irl we know when seasons change because of the two solstices and equinoxes that happen regularly. Without solstices and equinoxes they shouldn't know when season change, and If the seasons are irregular then they shouldn't know months or dates or how long a 'year' is.
@parastroika2393
@parastroika2393 6 дней назад
I imagine they use a lunar calendar and the Citadel has some unknown method of keeping track of things like dates and how long the days are. IIRC the passage of the moon is the only consistent measure of the passage of time we get in ASOIAF. You're right though it is a bit unclear.
@umwha
@umwha 6 дней назад
@@parastroika2393 Yup Makes no sense. They can use moon cycles. I assume they use a 12/13 Moon cycle 'year'. But in this world, deciding 12 moon cycles is a year is completely arbitrary. The only way they can explain this is if the calendar system was made in a time when a year was a normal length. Which might be possible, if time moved normally before the long night.
@parastroika2393
@parastroika2393 6 дней назад
@@umwha This is what the wiki says, "Regarding the passage of time in A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin has specified "Twelve moon [turns] to a year, as on earth. Even on our earth, years have nothing to do with the seasons, or with the cycles of the moon. A year is a measure of a solar cycle, of how long it takes the earth to make one complete revolution around the sun. The same is true for the world of Westeros.", thereby confirming that a year in A Song of Ice and Fire is as long as a year in real-life. Martin further noted that "Years are not based on seasons, even in the real world. They are based on how long it takes the earth to revolve around the sun... i.e., on astronomy, the position of the sun and moon and stars. Ancient monuments like Stonehenge and Newgrange served astronomical purposes as well as religious, and helped measure the passage of years, the summer and winter solstices, etc." The calendar system currently used in the Seven Kingdoms uses the start of the reign of King Aegon I Targaryen as the first year on their calendar, dating events using either AC (After the Conquest) or BC (Before the Conquest). Individual months do not appear to have specific names. When referring to a specific day in a specific month, maesters use the format "the twenty-second day of the fifth moon of the year 130 AC". No name for week-days (e.g., "Sunday" or "Wednesday") have been mentioned, and Martin has confirmed that they do not have those names. There is one mention of religious services held in a sept "every seventh day". It is said that the world's varied cultures, both ancient and modern, all reckon days and seasons and years very differently. Archmaester Walgram's book, The Reckoning of Time, covers this issue, but there is little consensus on what these world dates mean in Westeros reckoning. As an example, the Braavosi and Westerosi do not count days the same way."
@umwha
@umwha 6 дней назад
@@parastroika2393 Thats great! But the solar year cannot be desynched from the seasons. The solar year causes the seasons. The solar year involved the lengthening of days - which causes the hotter months, and the shortening of days which causes the cold months.

On the topic of holdfasts, it doesn't make sense that the entirety of the Stark lands would be controlled directly by Winterfell. In real history powerful lords always had multiple castles and territories, and it was common for those to be divided among children. On the other hand, George completely ignores this after this chapter, and every family always has only one castle, so we can't really think too much about this. It's mostly just a flaw of George's weak worldbuilding.
