I think Troy Sanders from Mastodon also does a bit of this technique of pitched screams if you wanna call it that. Also, Devin Townsend, is God when it comes to this. He just uses a little more of the traditional fry sound on top of his note, while Joe from Gojira uses more of false cord. At a certain level the barriers between false cord and fry screams become very muddled anyway. My takeaway from this video - all sorts of aggressive distorted compressed vocals have false cord engagement. Thanks for the upload.

I've been waiting on Gojira for a hot minute! I'd definitely recommend their latest studio album, Fortitude, for their more layered approach in the studio and their early The Link and Terra Incognita for the heavier vocals. Joe and Mario are some of the most fantastic musical writers I think we have out there right now and I love seeing them get more recognized!

Men, hundreds thanks for paying attention at gojira. But i think the best of them to work with in terms of vocal is the live at red rocks (2017) or at hellfest (2019) because joe changes the way of using his voice. Cheers from france !
@massivecunt8263
@massivecunt8263 3 года назад
It's mostly because he was tired. His vocal performances were better before. It's still amazing but you can tell that he's struggling a lot more now. A year or so after the start of a tour, it gets difficult.
@teo.lbn_
@teo.lbn_ 3 года назад
@@massivecunt8263 Yes it's a fact, but i found that there is a lot more of clarity and emotion in his voice these days, i think that it is a good thing to let pass more emotions threw his voice (for exemple flying wales at hellfest). And when i spoke about the changment of his voice that is between the live at les vieilles charrues and the live of red rocks or hellfest ^^

I don't know how bands with light shows like that can do that night after night lol. Also thank you for making me realize to be able to build proper technique I have to embrace sounding absolutely silly sometimes. I’ve heard this type singing/growling referred to as the ‘Cookie Monster voice.’ I just can’t seem to get into it or at least I only like small chunks at a time in a song. When I was in middle school, all the ‘scene’ kids started mimicking that style by jokingly doing random low, guttural Oinks and pig noises. A couple of them got pretty good at it and probably didn’t even realize that they had basically taught themselves a technique of singing and growling. None of them ever got into music or singing so they never grew more into it but it’s interesting how some preteens taught themselves death metal singing basically as a joke during classes
