The choir and the deep brass as it kicked in was absolutely spectacular, sent shivers down my spine.

FF4 was my first game into the franchise and will always be my favorite of the sprite games. While FF6 was fantastic, there is something special about your first. This expac has been spoiling my inner FF4 nerd so well. I can't wait to see where they go with this!

Yeah this fight is loaded with mechanics that are shoutouts specifically to Golbez's movelist in Dissidia, but on top of that they also throw in not just the more obvious FFIV references (Double/Twin Meteor, Black Fang, etc), but also incorporate some really interesting and kinda obscure references. It's a really cool fight that does a damn good job at paying homage to its source material on so many levels it's amazing.

My only wish is to also hear Golbez's theme in this, but I'm happy with what we got

thers so many references to it in 14, if you havent, search up ff4 references in 14, there is a channel that makes videos compiling them, its a lot and its touching. only if you never plan to play 14 though, .lots of spoilers

You should totally try to make a few hours a week, grab the free trial, get up to level 70 in the trial (free trial is getting another full expansion and level cap boost), buy Dawntrail when it drops, and enjoy all the Endwalker FFIV content then get to Dawntrail. Once you buy the game you'll have 30 levels to get (70 to 100 which is Dawntrail's level cap).

Same here. Since for some reason, we didn't hear the voice of OG Golbez when he spoke in our vision of his past.

​​@@detectivesexman2781That could have been to temporarily obscure that our "Golbez" was actually Durante. Although it wasn't a very good obscuration given that Durante's voice is clearly Golbez's.

It's still an open question of whether Golbez is a Shard of Azem, like the WoL and Ardbert. In FF4 Golbez was revealed to be the brother of the main character Cecil, and the WoL so far has been fulfilling Cecil's role. Not even just by being the main character, but also with their job progression from Dark Knight to Paladin with Shadowbringers and Endwalker. Being a Shard of the same Soul would be the closest thing to a brother in this narrative. If so, then it'd really underline his character as a fallen hero still trying to save the world.

@@justinlee790 ***SPOILERS*** This Golbez isn't for sure. But the "true" Golbez we see with the Echo, the original user of this armor, the one that was sealed in a memoria may be our shard, since we see what happenned throught his eyes during the vision.

@@Zackneifein31 There is no more evidence that Durante/Golbez isn't our Shard than that the original Knight in Black was. That is, there is zero evidence either way, for either individual. The only reason Golbez is a likely candidate is because of the WoL's parallels to Cecil, and the original plot developments of FF4.

​@@justinlee790 Durante's long blonde hair and insistence on calling golbez his "old friend" betrays this to me: that man is a zenos fragment who happened to get his wish of being our shard's murdertime bestie.

@@justinlee790 They are other reasons if you just think about it, the WoL is the greatest hero of the Source, from what we know Ardbert was the greatest of the First, and the OG Golbez from what we can understand also was (at least for Durante) for the Thirteenth. The only other occurence of having an echo vision from through the "eye" of someone from what I remember is Graha, but in this case, it was 100% to not "spoil" for those who hadn't yet understood that the Crystal Exarch was Graha and the next vision after discovering the Exarch true identity, it changed. Here, there is no reason for it, from the voice it's easy to understand that Durante is the "new" Golbez, and the "face" of OG Golbez cannot be spoiled since he has his armor.

This and Golbez EX are quite solid in terms of battle design. The mechanics are executed in quick succession, yet you're still able to comprehend what the hell is happening. There's not really much to decipher about the fight- just mechanics happening very fast.

The order of mechanics is not hard to remember, but executing them is the hard part. It forces me to cast expedient to keep up 😭

It's a great difficulty for normal content imo. You actually have to pay _some_ attention, even if it's still pretty easy.

@@acgearsandarms1343 Golbez is similar to Emet, in that what he's doing isn't "wrong" from their perspective. To Golbez, it might cause a calamity on our world to rejoin the 13th with the Source, but he's beyond caring about that. His entire planet and all life on it, has been trapped in a hell of undeath for thousands of years at this point. He's willing to do anything, to make that pain stop. All he wants, is to rejoin his world to the lifestream so that the people on it can finally die and be freed from their torment.

That striving melody of its main theme is just so damn powerful. I almost went to play it until I remembered that I am physically incapable of enjoying jrpgs

The closest who comes to that is Sephiroth, just replace the greatsword with a nodachi

Nah I think he is one of Zenos’s shards, I think our shard is the memorite crystal that fell into the hole.

The Azem shard likely is the original Golbez. Durante as Golbez here is likely Zenos shard.

It sure felt like it. This is easily the best patch of the expansion

Sounds like Daiki Ishikawa to me and prob my best bet. That being said the way the intro is structured sounds similar to Yoshitaka Suzuki's stuff, like Endcaller (tho I wouldn't expect him to be on patch stuff you never know).

@@Cue-Ball. Ishikawa is definitely my best bet as well but...I dunno. It sounds very much like Ishikawa but it's also not _exactly_ his usual style. Maybe it's just him trying out different stuff. The structure of the intro does sound like something Suzuki would do but the instrumentation used throughout the track doesn't sound quite like him.

@@Cue-Ball. Saya Yasaki. I would've never seen that coming. This is sooo different from what Yasaki did before. But I was right that it doesn't sound quite like Ishikawa. But first 2 boss themes from Yasaki alongside "Fleeting Moment" though and they're both beyond amazing.

I kind of agree tbh, mostly because the other fiends really had no build-up at all and we just up and killed them. To me, it felt like we weren't really done with them

Yeah but technically it's the main theme/world map theme from that game. Which by the way, FF2 that came out in America is actually FF4 :D

His title card is “Knight in Black” so I find the sword fits him well. If he was the “Mage in Black” that would be a different story.

Golbez in the After Years uses a sword

Well, spoilers 1: This isn't the real Golbez. He was sealed in a memoria during the war, this is just his friend using likeliness. 2: Golbez actually did use swords in The After Years. He's even depicted with one in his art, albeit this is long after he's gotten rid of the armor

It's pretty awesome how even when he DOES use the sword, it's typically charged with magic. The only time it is used normally is the Crescent Blade attacks, which are later fused with the dragon's attacks for a magic follow-up. His auto attacks are all magical, and every single other attack in the fight is magical.

Golbez and Thordan don’t share the same skeleton, while the idle animations look, kinda, similar, they have different auto-attacks and joint locations. Also the fact that Azdaja is there, as she’s apart of his skeleton. Also if I had to guess why Exdeath and Golbez are similar is probably cuz Evil Knight was in style back in the SNES days, also graphical limitations!

job classes are very specific in XIV, just because he's using darkness and has a great sword doesn't make him a dark knight, he needs the soul crystal as well

Actually this is my theory as well: Golbez being Azem and Durante being Zenos. Maybe even go further into the notion that those two are kinda linked and fated to be kinda friends in future reincarnations. We know little of Azem’s life and what they saw while traveling, so they maybe found a friend and that friend got reincarnated as Zenos and Durante

@@amsaa91 I'll admit, I saw someone suggest the Durante and Zenos connection while watching a streamer. Then I realized there was probably a reason why Zenos and his relationship to the WoL keep making their way into conversations.
