The Golden Wonder Killifish is a freshwater aquarium fish that is native to India. It is also known as the Malabar killi, or the striped panchax. It is one of the larger killifish species. Its scientific name is Aplocheilus lineatus, and it is one of the easier species to keep, feed, and breed. In this high definition video, these beautiful killifish are seen jumping out of the water to catch live crickets from a branch several inches above them. The video also explains some of the unique adaptations that enable this killi to hunt in the dark, as well as how to tell a male from a female. It also explains the functions and survival value of it's third eye. In a follow up video that is soon to be released I will look at how to breed this killi.

Never knew the killifish would eat a small enough guppy until the 2 I had went missing, they were very well fed but didn't matter. Thankfully the killi does live well with anything slightly larger. I have a single dwarf gourami and they don't fight and feed together without issues.

You can see (on my channel) it's very blackwater because the entire under-support consists of big manzanita pieces. Damn I just got a golden wonder killi from petco and had no idea they were this sophisticated. Truly a marvel of predatory evolution with all these sensors in its head and adaptations to surface dwelling, nature is amazing even on the smallest of scales. I wonder if he will be ok in my community tank and with dry foods like flake, pellets, bloodworms, etc. Should I start looking for live insects? EDIT: He loved Hikari freeze dried bloodworms! He's so cool with his long body + iridescent yellow hue! I think I found my favorite fish. Now I'm considering if I should make a full killifish community out of my 40 gal tank lol.

Killifish are amazing . . . One of my My favorite fish! They will eat flakes, pellets, etc. and small fish like guppies. No small fish in the community tank . . at least not for long!!! Awesome fish!

I recommend buying these killifishes if you're looking for something cool, active, cheap ($5 in store at Petco or breeder), easy to care for, and smart. Mine usually hang around near the top of the surface and wait for me to come by to feed. You can get them to tame very fast, mine were very frightened by me for the first day and by the following day they're already trailing my fingers for food. Very cool fishes compared to bettas who are usually inactive without you around and just hang around the decorations. This species of killifish gets very big too (I had a 5 inches male), the wild striped variant is also cool but is very rare to find.

I've previously sung (metaphorically, not literally) the praises for videos from The Dave (Dwarf Puffers and Kuhli Loaches) and am going to do so once again with regards to this video. Instead of harping on or waxing lyrical however, I'm just going to refer to The Dave's profile, specifically the About section and say "job done".

This video is actually awesome I use to have a golden wonder killifish named gar because he kinda resembled a gar fish. Around late spring early summer time he died I had him for almost 4 years. I loved gar he was one of my favorite fish he had a lot of personality and I use to feed him earwigs, crickets, spiders, and mealworms it was always fun to watch him eat, I never realized how much love I had for him until he died. Most of the time whenever I have a fish die it sucks but I never really got upset about but with gar it was different. Yesterday I decided to get another one l, a little baby boy and nicked named him lil G as in little Gar.

A wonderful concept and such an informative study of Aplocheilus lineatus. For me it was an incredible view and huge congratulations to the makers of this video. Was there a downside? For me yes, the use of a common name in such a professional piece of work.
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 6 лет назад
Thank you very much. I use the common name because the majority of people are confused and unfamiliar with binomial nomenclature. However, in the beginning of the video, I do show the genus and species name in the title. The youtube title uses the common name in order to make it easier for most people to find. Please have a look at some of my other videos for more entertaining and educating high quality work. Thanks again.

My panchax is in a long tank positioned a bit higher than me. I am always lower than her when I approach and she gets really excited to see me, no fear at all! I think these fish arereally intelligent. She is happy with frozen foods and flakes as long as I drop them right by her so she feels them hitting the water. Big, big appetite!

@TheDave333
@TheDave333 5 лет назад
The tank used was a 29 gallon tall tank. I removed several inches of water to film the killifish jumping for crickets. The tank has since been re-purposed, and is now being used to film Angelfish breeding. . . However, my designs are very simple- sponge filters, driftwood, and hardy plants such as Anubias, Java Fern, guppy grass, and subwassertang. . . .

If you have any wonderful tank ideas for them, I've been struggling, they've never been happier than summer tubbing with a low level for me, and redoing all the tanks, ugh- I have two left after a couple jumpers (and the tanks were covered, and the gap had a cover; they're sneaky!)
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 Год назад
They will find the tiniest of gaps. They like floating plants to hide under Frogbit, or Asian water fern. ( see my latest videos ). The more plant cover you have at the top the more babies will survive.

hi can you keep golden wonder killi fish with red chin killi fish and the crickets what size do you feed them on
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 4 года назад
Killifish are best kept in single species tanks, and I would definitely avoid keeping these two species together. They are very similar in preferences, and may even be able to cross-breed. They both prefer too be at the top of the tank and will compete with each other too much. For the video, I used the smallest crickets that I could find, the stores usually call them pinhead crickets.
