GoldenEye Tank Chase with Eric Serra's Original Score

Eric Serra's original score for GoldenEye's tank chase was famously rejected by director Martin Campbell as being unfitting for the scene and replaced with a track by composer John Altman. I've always wondered what Serra's work would have sounded like in this film, so this edit seeks to restore it. Honestly...I kind of like it and think it works. I'm a fan of Altman's track too, but Serra's work doesn't feel out of place (and I do think there was weaker tracks elsewhere in the film).
To create this edit, I recreated the film's original foley from elsewhere in the film's sound.

I don't even mind this. It has elements of the Bond theme and essentially the same notes, it's just a different synth and arrangement. So, I don't understand why people say this isn't "James Bond", when it essentially uses the same notes in many parts. It's a good arrangement in my opinion.

Not as bad as I was expecting, but Martin Campbell made the right call in replacing it.

I have to say that the Producers made a very wise decision to change this. It was very underwhelming IMO but Serra's scores for the romantic and melancholy moments in Goldeneye were wonderful. I admire Serra for trying something different but this was really wasn't the sound we were all familiar with, especially after what John Barry gave us in particular. Thank you so much for uploading this comparison.

100% They made the right call (although I like the track on its own) but the rest of Serra’s score really isn’t that bad at all, really great in parts actually! Whispering Statues and Run, Shoot and Jump are absolutely brilliant!

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it still sort of sounds like the music for a Goldeneye themed slot machine.

This was my first bond movie and the scene with the tank is what ingrained that Bond music in me when I was 6 or 7, that's how I know that iconic music..from this scene. So if they had changed it 🤷🏾‍♂️, every bond film is someone's first. Golden eye is a gem of a film 👌

Oh man I always wanted to do this. How hard was it to recreate the foley? Did you also isolate the dialogue without hearing Altman's music in the back? Great job! I still thought Serra's piece could have still worked.

I love the score that Eric Serra did for GoldenEye.. but they made a wise choice going with the classic type of score for the tank scenes 😂😂.. Otherwise the rest of the movie score is brilliant ESPECIALLY the ending

I honestly prefer this to what we got. While I'm not the biggest fan of goldeneyes score, this track better fits the film and the other parts of the scores as it carries the same industrial percussive sound and I love the industrial varients of the bond theme spread throughout

What's that weird chorusy horn section sample? It sounds so dated. The whole thing sounds like some weird PS1 game soundtrack or something

It’s a sample of the Gunbarrel music from Goldfinger. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6gKAx-v515c.html

This is perfection! 👍 Though I got to wonder. What would the "Archive Shootout" sound like, if they didn't get John Altman to help with the score? Would it be without music or would they reused "Run, Shoot, & Jump"?
@JOSH-lw2jv
@JOSH-lw2jv Год назад
@Jesús St James Sorry. I meant the second half of the Archive Shootout when Ouromov & his troops were chasing and firing at Bond & Natalya, Natalya getting captured, Bond using his belt harpoon to make his escape, and then him staring at the tank. That section was also done by John Altman.

Not quite true. The scene with boris and the exploding pen + the chase on top of the antenna station were also replaced with different cues than intended originally. The album has both of the originally intended tracks as 'The Scale to Hell' if I recall correctly.

I am huge fan of Serra's soundtrack and really love that track. However, even if your edit is really excellent I realize now that indeed It doesn't fit the image and I guess that the producers did well to remove it.

This is dreadful. Thank GOD they rescored it. It sounds like a porno soundtrack with that drum loop -- takes me back to the days of trying to watch late-night Cinemax on a scrambled cable channel. Also, it is the film score composer's responsibility -- fair or not -- to work around the sound effects. Most of the "instrumentation" and register choices are getting buried by being at the same frequencies -- nothing "pops". John Altman saved the day here, no question.

Wow, ok. I'm a big fan of Serra's Goldeneye score but it was absolutely the right decision to change this. I adore the Goldeneye Overture but this is awful. It's just not serious enough. Music from the N64 game would have suited the scene better!

Apparently his relationship with the producers was so strained that he composed a truly bad track like this ON PURPOSE.

I see why the producers chose to use something classic. This makes it look and feel silly at times.

Granted i only liked Eric's score for nostalgia purposes and even then i still despise it no offense to people who like it. This sound's like one of the better songs from the soundtrack but i prefer the original.

@@MrMichaellee5353 indeed it was, there's many tracks for bond films that on first glance sound totally unsuitable but apon further glance they kind of fit. I can see what eric was going for and i think he should of been given a second chance, it works to some extent some places it excells, some it doesn't. But martin Campbell made a good decision here. Hearing a rendition of the og bond theme in the film for the first and basically last time makes the scene more powerful

The run shoot jump music in the archive was removed and I was never so pissed, but sure point out this music to defend the removal of Eric Serra from the soundtrack. I mean yes they left it on the the satellite finale but they lessened the film removing run shoot jump from the originally longer scene in the archives.

Run, Shoot, and Jump was right where it was supposed to be, right before the archive bit. And yes, it was used again at the end.
