Brendan....You and Tony are so good together....its like two different minds that are in perfect harmony...actually I think the musical analogy is perfect. As one of you speaks the other pauses...and the blend of the different ideas you each offer is perfect...you are not competing with each other...you add to each others thought lines in a seemless way...don't know why its just hitting me now how perfect the blend of Tony/Brendan and Brendan/Tony is since I've watched this video probably more than any other and I've watched heaps of videos. The content is invaluable as well...this over the top malady has got to be the number one problem in golf. You have offered some of the best insights into how to look at the problem (the 2 airplanes description is amazing) as well as how to fix the problem by bringing the hands back to their original position by getting them into the "functional swing plane" again. I think that the team you had here is something very special and unusual and I think you two should give serious consideration of doing a bunch more work together...and man am I glad you did this video!

My instructor (who recently retired at 65) is a big advocate of this. He would demonstrate that speed comes from the arms by sitting on a stool with his feet planted on the ground and with his driver hit the ball 200 yards. If you don't have a stool, an excellent drill is to set up for a regular shot but keep to your feet together. If you're able to flush the ball, you'll get an enhanced sensation of what this feels like (and will be surprised how far you hit it). This is also an excellent drill if you're overactive in the lower body. This was a big revelation for me because when I started 2.5 years ago I was really overactive with my lower body (leaving arms and club way behind and shanking or slicing). This allowed me to close the gap between arm movement and body movement so they're more in sync. As far as where to "swing your arms": I think about it like dropping (NOT PULLING!) them straight down (parallel to the target line). If I try to go at the ball with them I'll come across the ball. Try both extremes (behind you and in front of you) and see the results. The answer will be somewhere in between. This helped me too: when I started out my tension was opposite of what it ought to be: loose legs and tight arms. You need a very stable (but not rigid) lower base and have moderately loose arms (not very loose like a flop shot). Trying swinging the club with tight arms and then with loose - one will obviously be faster. The stable lower base helps you remain in position when you take your backswing which in turn sets you up for consistent impact.

THis is one of the best golf instruction videos I have seen. I have been doing this for the past 3 weeks (before even seen this tip) and now im hitting further and more solid than ever. I don't even have to work hard for a draw anymore, it just naturally happens when my swing though is "fast arms". Launch angle with irons has also increased exponentially, that I might need to change to more lower launching irons now (wedges are going MEGA solid but maybe too high due to all this new increased speed on my swing). Was Hitting 180-185 with 7 irons yesterday

Funny enough when I first learned to play I was “feeling” a lot of arms and in particular the right one way back when. Got down to consistently scoring in the mid 70s. Then all I heard was legs, hips, etc...so I worked on that forever and sadly never was as consistent at scoring mid 70s for the last few years. I said F it I’m going to do go back to the arms feeling again and played really well last few times. This validates it.

I've already struggled to get the club going in to out. Up until now I'd always been told I need to start by turning my shoulders, the part they left out was the arms needed to move to keep up with the shoulders! By the time I made contact with the ball my shoulders were so far open and my arms stuck behind me the only path my arms could take was out to in. This video has been a great as I'm now able to draw the ball! Instead of trying to keep my arms from firing everything is now 'timing' itself so much better in my swing. Thanks guys.

This arms first concept is right on. Our body (feet, legs, hips, etc.) know’s what to do. I compare it to a left handed professional racquetball player hitting a down the line backhand shot. Once the left foot is planted, the left hand starts down with great speed and the body automatically responds. It’s about speed not power.

Hi Brendan I’m a subscriber of inside the golf lab and purchased the video instruction. But the instruction video is not very detail regarding the “arm swing” I’m doing great if I’m just using my right arm like you did on this video. Once I put my left arm on the club I’m doing everything wrong like you said on this video. Is there a more detail video on how to train or practice this arm swing correctly?

I feel like the grip of the club is pulled down into a parallel position to the ground...not driving the butt of the ground into the ground which is a different thing...at a certain point I atop mocing my hands consciously and let the weight of the club head take over....this is what is helping me gain yards by really releasing the club head....it is still a work in progress as the feeling is very subtle...off s little and it dos not work..but again the feeling is to put the grip parallel to the ground. Not pull it down vertically mind you..

I finally freaking can shallow my club properly and smack the dumb ball thanks to this idea! assuming that you have built a solid foundation in your swing.. grip/post/takeaway/etc all you gotta do folks is feel like your stabbing your handle into your right foot first and boom everything else is a reaction to that. It's ass backwards to what we have all been taught...

Just try make a bigger shoulder turn. I think thats the reason most ppl come over the top, trying to create speed with hands and arms when they have no turn. So much convolution in golf advice. How can u hit the ball from the inside when you dont turn considering your hands need to be in front of you? So yea over the top wrist flickers to compensate and attempt to create speed. My 5 cents

Just a few hours ago I was watching a video about Golfing Machine Power Accumulators and the correct sequence and which was contrary to your video... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gcoO49gZw94.html My two penneth worth is if you swing out to in and slice or pull then focussing on arm swing will help make the path more neutral, swinging with feet together has a similar result.. whereas if you swing in to out and hit big hooks or push shots then focussing more on starting the swing with your legs and rotating the body will make your swing path more neutral... So IMO there is room in golf for different swing thoughts to feed your particular need.

Thats because the swing path depends on what shot shape you want to hit, where your arms/club is at the top of the backswing, your body shape and movement restrictions / flexibility. There is a window that will put you in the right area but there is no one exact answer that fits all.

More than one way to skin a cat. Top pros don’t start arms first. Brendon just swished using right hand sue as hell that speed would catch any body motion. Your method will work but not with ant consistency!
@dand1363
@dand1363 5 лет назад
It's a feel. Yes, on 3D motion the body will still move first fractions of a second before the arms but this will get you moving the arms faster, sooner so they don't get thrown over the top or, you having to save it by right tilting and trying to get them coming from the inside.

the good ole "keep your back to target in the downswing" accomplishes what they're saying here. Smack an impact bag with your arms and keep your body still or back to target. (Your body won't stay still) Just pump your arms down into the bag. you will come from the inside like you've never felt before and your shots may change forever if you're a chronic over the topper.
@trevorbye6965
@trevorbye6965 3 года назад
yep, I can totally confirm that the "back to target" helped me immensely with getting this feel down. BBG has a video with Monte Scheinblum where he talks about this as well (it's the "square the clubface with your body" video), and is another one I would watch that helped me a lot. Jack Nicklaus was a huge advocate for this feeling as well. I have tried literally everything to try and stop swinging over the top, and this is the ONLY feel that finally worked for me, and it worked almost immediately.

This has been peddled around since the early 90s (or even earlier). Came from the Leadbetter/O'Grady camp and was pushed around by Mike Bender during that time. I don't think it holds water when you look at what the elite golfers are doing. Maybe to "feel" like this is what is happening but certainly this isn't what actually happens.

The feeling of arms first doesn't mean that they actually WILL fire first in the downswing. The thought of arms first is beneficial as it assists in not getting the club layed down or stuck, which happens when hips get too active. Watch a video on RU-vid, tiger woods with butch harmon on this very thing. Tiger said he tried to feel his hands were winning the race to the ball vs firing his hips. In reality the hips still will go first, but the arms won't get left behind.

Tony you just saved my golf game. I'm 79 and have been playing for 58 years. I was a 4 handicap in my 30's and now I'm a 13. I've always been a left side control guy and lately ball striking has been terrible. Yesterday I watched this video and thought well I'm ready to try anything. Today at the range the first three shots were much better and then I felt a back of the grip pressure with the two middle fingers on my right hand. Then I recalled Hogan in his book showing a picture of those two fingers being the pressure point and he wished he had 3 right hands at impact. Concentrating on this I felt I could swing as hard as I wanted and ball striking was amazing. Every club was straight, high and long. With left side control swing hard from the top would create bad shots. Always felt like I had to start down slowly. The pros never look like they do this but I couldn't figure out the difference. Thanks to you I know know the difference and it's truly amazing. I know it's not a bandage tip. Truly the real thing. Cant wait to get to the course. You have to get this message out to more people. Many thanks again Jim

I have also been told by some top instructors that I have this problem of my arm staying plastered to my chest and to speed them up. It's really weird to me that something so basic is the issue with so many golfers and causes endless confusion. I'm sure all the talk of pivot driven, passive arm swings is not helping. How did so many of us become "scared" of moving the arms independently of the shoulder pivot? Just take a simple swing like Stricker in slow motion and he's clearly moving the arms independently of the shoulder rotation.
@wreckim
@wreckim 5 лет назад
I'm sure you can overdo the body motion; this lesson/vid is very solid indeed. However, you cannot spin out with your hands and shoulders right from the top, and Luczak would know this far better than me I'm sure, it's just that instruction is sometimes given with a preposition...that other things are in order IMO. There's a little settlement of the back toward the target that every great player has...then those hands, arms need to get going as this great lesson indicates. 2c.

Except of course the hips move towards the target and rotate counterclockwise before the arms and hands even reach the top of the backswing. So Mr. Malaska go on teaching feel (that is, apparently, how you personally feel) over learning and teaching what really happens in a good swing. You’ve been doing it for decades why stop now?
@Ariztid

My striking got worse and worse the more I tried to "swing with my lower body" as most people teach. I think that this type of teaching comes from people looking at video footage or they're trying to make sense of 5 Lessons. If you slowly start the downswing with your arms your body will start firing or rushing to get out of the way. You don't even have to think about it! Look at Sergio Garcia. He was taught to imagine pulling down on a heavy chain from the top of his swing. Thanks for sharing this video!
@cscoetzee
@cscoetzee 4 года назад
Stefan Coetzee This looks to me, as if the body automatically reacts correctly when your first thought is to swing your arms? I.e. the body automatically does what is necessary to support your intention. (Like the 'paradoxical intent' technique for overcoming anticipatory anxiety, discovered by Victor Frankl in the concentration camps). Also look for Monty Scheinblum's 'no-turn cast drill, to see what is meant by this. In practice, trying to copy the movement by actually doing first what you SEE is happening first, doesn't work . What happens first is actually the paradoxical result of your first intention.
@e.g.flores2819

Arms are way faster than the body, if arms go first the body will follow but you will not go over the top and you won't get stuck either. I have gained over 30 yards on my drives since i started this swing a few months back. Of course you have all kinds of theories, but what works best for you is the question. What good does it do you if you try to swing like Mr. Hogan and get stuck or go over the top all the time.

I am reading three classics from the past : Percy boomer’s On Learning golf, Bob Toski’s Guide tp better golf and Practical golf by John Jacobs( my fav in terms of readability ) and all talk about strengthening the lead arm. This new teaching somehow lost focus on this and a certain herd mentality developed with the onset of video instruction analyzing every body position and confusing cause and effect. In that way Be Better golf and Tony are a rare species.

Very apropos....played today for the first time in 3 weeks. At the school, when I hit my best shots, I had the sensation that my hands were somehow disembodied from my arms, and that if I moved my hands correctly into the ball, I would flush it. Today, I hit it fine warming up, but out on the course, particularly early on, I was hitting a lot of pulls, and I know it was the right shoulder taking over again. I looked up some Bender videos, and he advocates the same motion - the sensation that the arms move while the torso stays in place. In a real swing, of course this doesn't happen, but the big thing is not to get the shoulders involved too early in a spinning motion.

I think you have to have a big turn and good arm structure before this makes much sense.

BE BETTER GOLF Good video. Tiger says at 5:22: “you wouldn’t tell most golfers this” Because most golfers don’t have the hip speed that Tiger has/had. TW had to back off of that move and the hands in front drill was to stop an exaggerated lower body. But Hogan etc. aren’t preaching an excessively active lower body; if ordinary golfers could have a small percentage of the lower body lead, that would be good. You yourself have said, unless I’m wrong, that you tend to have fast hips/over active lower body, no? So this feel makes sense for those who have a similar problem.

I think it does line up with what Nicklaus said he was trying to do in a swing which was basically to get the club back down to the ball before his shirt buttons got there.
@emncaity
@emncaity 6 лет назад
That's one of several similar things he said, but you're absolutely right. I wonder if Nicklaus knows something some of these other guys don't.
@emncaity
@emncaity 6 лет назад
Eh, sort of. Not really. Mostly these guys do things they say they don't do. The actual facts of how a swing works don't change because of somebody's feel or somebody's experience. If you watch the best players, all of them swing their arms from the shoulder sockets and release the clubhead from the hands in a two-pendulum motion supported by the rest of the body. The fact that it _looks_ like they're "driving the club with the middle of the body," or that they feel like they are, doesn't change what's actually happening. You don't get to tour level, or even to low-handicap amateur level, without finding a true swinging-and-releasing motion somewhere in there, no matter what it looks like. If a pro who's been out there eight years decides he needs to "take the hands out" or "let the body release the club," what he's talking about is totally foreign to what the average player would mean by those same things, relative to what he's already doing. A pro is already slinging the hell out of the clubhead with a swinging motion. It may be that he's gotten out of balance and needs to bring the action of the rest of his body into line so it can support fully, put the club into the right routing more consistently, and yes, even add some amount of power (but not nearly as much as people think), to get the full value out of the swinging motion he's developed. But for an amateur who's never learned to actually swing and release the club, telling him to "take the hands out" or to go at it harder with rotation, body release, etc., is just death. It wasn't just Flick, btw. Be Better pointed out Mike Bender, who's a good example. All of Toski's work falls into that category, and in fact he was a prime mover and articulator of it. Also Davis Love Jr. (III's dad). Snead. John Jacobs. Quite a few others. Couples, Love, and Els come to mind immediately over the past few decades on tour, but really everybody who's had any success does it.

The body is the initiator. Then the arms drop and gravity accelerates them. The sense of the arms racing ahead is the body is so much slower. Read what Hogan said about wishing he had 3 right hands. Hogan said repeatedly that, while playing, he thought of only two things regarding the downswing: He thought of starting the hips first, and of hitting the ball as hard as possible with the body, arms and hands, in that sequence.
@freddy8345
@freddy8345 6 лет назад
Nicklaus described what he did in the downswing just the opposite. He wanted to get the hands back down to the ball ahead of his shirt buttons (as a feel).
@ak-iy4yb

I read Hogan's book too. But like he said in the video, turning body first is just not realistic and doesn't work. I followed all directions from Hogan and couldn't figure it out because hands get so behind. Hands should always come down first, even before shoulder.
@GreenDistantStar
@GreenDistantStar 6 лет назад
The torsion between hip and shoulder rotation dictates the amount of energy that the arms can direct. There's a simple bio-mechanical test: simply stand erect and outstretch your ams by your side to parallel to the ground. Now rotate your arms around your body *without* moving your shoulders or hips. You have very little power with arms only. Now rotate arms and shoulders only. That's about a short chip. Only by adding hip turn can the shoulders move fully and the arms find their place in the swing.

An excellent description of intent vs actual. For me, to get my arms going first, I have been working on my right foot staying flat (ish) up to impact. This makes my arms come off my chest and stops that upper body/shoulder lead (if that makes sense)? And as Bobby would say its a side on, under hand game. For me this creates a draw pattern, which I'm more that happy with. Good work B&T

Look at the guys swing at 7:40 and slow it down to .25 speed. He hasn't even completed his backswing and his left knee kicks towards the target, followed closely by this hips. His hips are completely open and his hands are still at shoulder height. Totally contradicts what these guys are saying.

I think, the body automatically reacts like that when your first thought is to swing your arms. The body automatically does what is necessary to support your intention. (Like the 'paradoxical intent' technique for overcoming anticipatory anxiety, discovered by Victor Frankl in the concentration camps). Also look for Monty Scheinblum's 'no-turn cast drill, to see what I mean by this. In practice, trying to copy the movement by actually doing what you SEE is happening first, doesn't work . What happens first is actually a paradoxical result of your intention.

Brendon, you asked IMO a great question. Where do you swing the arms? I feel like Tony sidestepped the question and didn’t really answer the question. What is the intent when you swing your arms? Y’all did great on talking about separating the arms from the shoulder joint and the turn, but I’m afraid your very valid question was ignored. That is something I’m working on in my swing so when I heard you ask it, my ears perked up like a dog. Ask Tony again and see what he says. I would add to the question- where are you swinging the arms and/or what is the correct hand path for a stock shot? Get him to answer the question. Where is the intent when you swing the right arm? Is it at the ball, beyond the ball (kind of Bobby clamper aiming point style), or what?
@BEBETTERGOLF
@BEBETTERGOLF 6 лет назад
Nathan Cates really important you don’t aim the hands at the ball. Since the club head is on the end of a long Stick you have to aim your hands well inside the ball. Also the sensation of the hit works best past the ball. For me the path has to feel like it is coming from 20 degrees or more from the inside and a little up to in reality get it 1 degree from the inside and shallow. You always have to adjust this feel based on your tendency but you get used to what works for you. I’ll ask T in a different way.
@Somefatdude

BE BETTER GOLF awesome thanks. I tend to hit a push draw already. On my gc2 I start the ball well right and I’m trying to either 1- reduce the rightward path or 2- just play a push like Trevino and Couples with less draw. I appreciate you asking further. Thanks!

Read John Jacobs re establishing the right relationship between the swinging motion of the arms and the turning of the shoulders (or, if you prefer, the torso) that puts the club into the right route and adds range of motion. It's a feeling of swinging-while-turning that every player has to work out for himself, and I don't think anybody's ever improved on what Jacobs said about it. But the point is that, unlike so much erroneous modern instruction, you _do_ have to have independent swinging of the arms from the shoulders and the clubhead from the hands (or wrists, if you prefer). The "no hands" and "no arms" swngs are mythological. If you want the most solid technical explanation I've ever seen (and I've seen almost everything out there, having played and taught as a pro), the absolute state of the art as far as I'm concerned, get a copy of Xichao Mo's _Decoding the Golf Swing Plane_. It's a great explanation of how and why the club has to rise to that second plane and how it gets back down. The book probably could've used a good technical editor to make some of the terminology more distinct and understandable, but that's a minor carp about a brilliant piece of work. As for Luczak. I'm very seriously thinking about scheduling a session or two just to have an observation of what I'm doing and to hear more of the specifics of his ideas. I'm convinced this guy is not only solid but at the top rung of the ladder in what he's doing.

Ahh this! For years I was told, thought I saw and misunderstood how to do this. I always knew to feel like you were pulling an arrow, ringing a bell or stabbing a ball etc, but I always got my hips too far ahead of my hands because i was using my shoulders first. Just today I found a few videos showing throwing your hands first then CONTINUE to drive with the lower body. First thing I noticed is no more early release, i guess because I wasn't trying to catch my hands up to my hips. Next I noticed my shaft was covering my left side way better. Third thing was I jumped way up in club head speed and last was the strike was way more ball first then turf. Game changer for me, I have to play with alignment a bit more, but I really like this. The feeling for me is more forearms first, then hips then shoulders but it just feels so much faster and more natural. Question, is this the same for driver also? Another thing I just thought of, maybe I am wrong, but the physics of it. If your storing all this potential energy during the back swing are you storing it in your arms or your legs? My guess is your legs, if your hips fire first you are releasing that energy too early, where as if your arms fire first and pull your body around and then you drive your lower body you should release at impact. Maybe that's wrong, but that is what it feels like to me.

Golf is a crazy game where you can wake up every morning thinking you solved the golf swing. Hogan said its his right hand, Jordan spieth is a natural left hander playing righty, Mickelson is a right hander playing lefty. I think its a feel they have but you actually swing the club between your hands like a rope from the butt of the club to your body where you can feel like you are using one arm to propel the club. BECAUSE if you ever take one arm swings right or left, you can feel like yeah that feels great, BUT you cannot make that exact same motion with both hands on the club its just anatomically impossible. I think most of the pros would say they are right hand dominant, but there still is no pro who voluntarily plays with only one hand on the club. It could be primarily one side dominant but you need both hands/arms/body to handle the momentum of the club after impact or else you would let go of the club to save yourself from falling forward or wrenching your shoulder.

I think you missed or skipped the lower body movement (transition) to start the downswing. This automatically drops the arms/hands and prevents the over the top move.
@richardlovell7316
@richardlovell7316 5 лет назад
It's a concept, not an absolute. Momentum is created by the body and the left side/foot/leg creates ground force which accelerates the club past the body. Fair?

Hi Brendan, I think a good tip you could broadcast for those who have difficulty distinguishing between the arms and torso would to be an emphasis on the movement of the right elbow. For a lot of golfers (myself included for a while), we fail to separate the two movements because we are not sure which part of the arm can initiate the independent movement. I've found that if my first move is to drive my right elbow into my belt buckle, that it allows my right arm to move independently from my torso and can create that desired sequence/plane. Often times when viewers hear "right arm" they think of the movement of the entire arm occurring at the same time, when in reality the right elbow is the key piece that needs to be put in place for a good swing plane.
@JT-nz7wf
@JT-nz7wf 6 лет назад
Taylor Baumeister would be interested to hear a response to this. What is the initiator to the right arm first sequece? I have been working on this but still feel an over the top movement.
