thanjs for the video, i changed the ownership of the folder and the other user accepted and he is nuw the owner, but still all the photos inside the folder are owned by ne and taking my google drive storage. do you know the reason?

Hi Murat, thanks for the question. Yes, transferring ownership is not quite the same as sharing. When you share a folder all the contents are shared. But when you transfer a folder only the folder ownership is transferred. Go back into the folder where you transferred ownership. Click on the first file and then Shift-Click the last file. Then follow the normal process to transfer ownership... right-click, choose Share, choose the person, and select Transfer Ownership from the dropdown menu. I hope that helps!

Hi Estêvão. Yes, if you have many files scattered throughout many different folders it can be a problem. Or if it's just certain files in a folder, but many of them, that's a problem too. :( If all the files are in a single folder and they are all grouped together, then selecting multiple files at once is the easiest way to do it. Sorry, I cannot answer your question about Google changing it.

It's important to note that even if you transfer a folder, the ownership of folders and files within them does NOT get transferred! Each folder and file must have ownership changed.

Hi Jessie, thanks for adding this information. Yes, it's not like moving a folder on a computer with everything following along. Each individual item has its own ownership rules.

Hi Jeffery thanks form this wonderful video. One question.. I am trying to transfer ownership of a google sheet from My acct 1 to my own acct 2. And the status is stuck at Pending owner and not transferring the ownership. I have done all the steps listed by you. Any guidance will be appreciated. thanks

Hi Manjit, when you started the transfer did your acct 2 email get a notification? Acct 2 has to accept the transfer before it will be completed.

What happen with date of files? Its change or still same before transfer?

When a change of any kind is made, the "last modified" date and time are updated. So changing ownership will change it.

Hi Jeffrey After transferring the ownership, if I delete the files, others would still be able to access it right? Coz in my case I was the one who uploaded those files

Yes, after the ownership is successfully transferred, you would be able to delete your access to the files. Or you could have the new owner remove your access as well.

@Jeffrey Kirk Yes I can delete the files but I am getting a warning that all collaborators will loose their access. So I want that others can still access some of the photos which I don't want.

Hi, Jeffrey--I've been trying to do what you've shown in this video. The person I'm attempting to transfer ownership to is already in the shared list of (several) people who currently have access as editors to the file. I go to select their name, click on 'transfer ownership', confirm that I want to make them the owner, but then I get the message 'you can't change the owner of this item'. Do you know what I might be prevented from doing this? Thank you!

Hi James! Is the file a Google file such as a Google Docs file or Google Sheets file? Or is it an externally developed file such as MS Word or MS Excel? If it's the latter case, I have heard other reports of this happening. I just tried it myself though and I was not given the option to transfer ownership of these files. The good thing about externally developed files is there's a workaround. You can download, send to the other person, and they can upload as the owner. That's not as straight forward as changing ownership, but it gets the job done. 😃

@@JeffKirk hey, thank you for this! I was able to find someone who was already on the shared access list with all of the files that I was listed as the owner and transfer ownership to them. This freed up over 40 GB of my Google Drive space! Thank you for the help with this!

transfering the ownership automatically transfers file ownership inside that folder?

Transferring a folder only transfers the ownership of the folder. If you want the files transferred, you have to transfer them as well.

Hi Jeffrey, thanks for a very helpful video. I'm encountering a problem -- I'm trying to transfer ownership from a common Gmail account to a DomainName Gmail. I'm getting the message "Sorry, cannot transfer ownership to DomainName. Ownership can only be transferred to another user in the same organization as the current owner." Any suggestions? Thank you.

Thanks for your message. Do you mean you are trying to transfer the ownership of a file from an owner that has a gmail account to an owner of another domain? Or do you mean you're trying to transfer the gmail account itself to the domain gmail account?

Once you have successfully transferred ownership, you will not be able to delete the file that is now owned by someone else. If you try to delete it, you may get a message telling you that you can remove the file from your view. That way you won't see the file anymore, but the owner and anyone else it is shared with will continue to have access. Of course, if you have your own separate copy, you can delete that.
