I am so excited for KCK!!! Great place to live regardless of whether its KCK, Johnson County or KCMO-we miss the area and would go back in a heartbeat. As far as the "minority town" of blacks and Hispanics, I still know of a lot of Anglo Saxon Caucasians who live there as well. Don't be afraid of us Hispanic Caucasians-we work, are educated and contribute. The same for Blacks regardless of whether HIspanic or not.This is an issue of a nice small town being on top for once. Go KCK!!!!!!
Kansas City, KS is a real slice right out of America. We have a little bit of everything and everyone here. This is an excellent place to pilot an innovative project to find out how average folks will interact with it.
People who make negative comments are jealous. Kansas City was selected because of our infrastructure and the people who manage the infrastructure. Additionally, we have a huge start-up community. I lived in Silicon Valley for 20 years and now live in Kansas, it's impressive to see the volume of technical expertise in KCK and KCMO.
I want to move to Denver, Colorado but I really want Google Fiber. It would be so nice to not have to worry about where to move because of lack of proper infrastructure.
Wow. I am soooo excited about this. And I don't even live in Kansas City. Google, thank you for always being on the edge.... (and please, please, please add Dallas and it's suburbs to the list!)
Yay! Kansas City will no longer have constipated Internet access! Plus this news helps warrant more trips to KC which means BBQ for me. Winners all around! :)
I'm over in KC, MO myself, but I see great things for the local economy. I have several friends looking for work in the networking sector and this should help with jobs significantly. Not to mention deployment and the IT datacenter side will be a huge boost to things here. What's next? TV, phone, etc with Google?
For the people asking what other people are saying when they say "Kansas City" or the "Greater KC area" or the "Metro area," they're talking about BOTH KC's. Google Fiber is going to ONLY Kansas City, Kansas, NOT the entire Kansas City area. It does get confusing yes, because when people mention Kansas City, they're generally talking about the Missouri side, NOT the Kansas side. However in this case, we ARE talking bout the Kansas side. So it's like I just said, Google fiber is giong to KCK.
I live in KCK so I have a little credibility on this subject. KCK has had amazing growth with the Legends shopping area and the Speedway development in the western part of the city. If Google fiber can bring knowledge to the whole community then I say more power to them. First, who pays for this? Second is this "service" just a way for government and the private sector to pry into our personal business? Third, because it tied to a utility do we pay higher utility rates and higher taxes?
Can't wait for expansion of fiber into my area, I'm currently stuck with cable companies that totally limit bandwidth and provide slow speeds. When fiber expansion is global, well that's one heck of a thing to imagine.

If you could bring Google Fiber to the Tampabay area in Florida, that would be wonderful! Most people in the Tampabay area use brighthouse networks as their ISP, and they quality of service has gone way down these past couple of years.

I absolutely LOVE Google and can't wait to see the innovations that come out of this cooperative endeavor. As a teacher in KCK and a Wyandotte county resident, I absolutely "giddy" with anticipation!
I doubt every user will have access to gbs network besides big companies/schools an corporations but I can assure that at least 100mbs networks will be available to everyone.(100mbs = ~12mb/s download speed)

Data transfer speeds is sooo important. There's nothing worse then losing an erection due to long buffering times. Like come on, I can't wait ten seconds for my naked lady pictures to come up. Thanks google for bringing this to Kansas City.
If possible, could you guys wire up new jersey next? Verizon doesn't even have their fiber optics set up right over here. We've got pretty dense population, so that's a large market of potential customers.

I'm not sure about the technicals but pushing it to every home is one expensive task. Subscription charge, if their will be one, is a mystery. But this is Google's grand move in making sure their web based future is secure by offering cheap ways in delivering gigabit speeds. They say any knowledge here will be passed onto other ISPs across the globe. In short, Google is attempting to abolish bandwidth caps that dig into their bottom line. RU-vid is one great bandwidth hog.
Guess what! We still roll with 384kbps, 512kbps and +-4096kbps here in South Africa.... Google what can you do for us here in South Africa? We need better Education, Entertainment, Commerce and Developers.. Our Slow internet are keeping us behind, far away from world class service.
I don't know what google was thinking when they picked Kansas city. I mean the president of commerce talks about sending barbecue smells over the network? Ya I'm sure google will get right on that... LOL!
@enormhi The United States is 20-25th in the world for average internet speed... depending on who you ask. Most urban areas have 4-8Mbps. At the university I attend we get 40-50 down. A Gigabit is absolutely ridiculous to even think about. Hardly anybody has that.
This is where google will gather your data. They will be the service provider, thus collecting all your personal information. It looks good...it smells good...but I'm tellin you...Big Brother just walked in the room....(well, he walked in a long long time ago, but he just spoke up and said, 'Here I am'.)
1200 texts from when I wake up to when i get to school would make about two texts a second. Think it takes my phone about 2-5seconds to send one text and be ready to send another (empty) one.
@pr1nyc1 The Royals and the Chiefs are teams based on the Missouri side so they'll still fail while the people on the Kansas side get to hear the news quicker of their fails with their new high speed connection. :)
@hansonkewl06 It's the population density. The population isn't dense enough for Americans to be able to afford to upgrade at the rate denser countries. Not to mention the lack of support from the public and government. Places like Korea and Japan have all of this, that's why their internet speeds are so fast compared to ours. But hopefully Google is able to push us out of the door on this one.
@mistafied187 Yeah no doubt wireless is the future, the telcos are the ones to roll out massive infrastructure changes though. Regardless of how more bandwidth is delivered I just want to see more competition. I sell dedicated servers for a living, I constantly come across bandwidth providers still asking for $20/mbit on gig commits. It's time for change!
I'm not a computer network person so I dont quite understand why America has been behind for so long. It's about time for America to speed up, issues with internet connection have been bothering me for many years and it nags me alot that countries like South Korea has one of the fastest internet connections in the world.
@PocketChalker Not any different than your internet provider right now, they collect all your data, everything that you click and download on the internet. Just try asking them for a detailed bill of your monthly usage and you'll see what I mean.
Cindy Lane's comment about the frequency of the average high school student's texting is the most assinine statistic I have ever heard come from someone's mouth. Why in the hell did Google leave that remark in this video?
@larewwedxhhh19 I am now, but I wasn't 4 months ago. I don't think KC, MO were ORIGINALLY going to get it, and I made that comment when the announcement was first made.
The coincidence that my video pauses and starts to buffer the second Patrick Pinchette says "buffer!". The UK needs to take notice of this. Relatively a small island with concentrated population and wealth, we should have fibre already.
