GoPro Hero 8 Black review 

We had issues with the bitrate on the GoPro footage while exporting our edit of the video review here on RU-vid. Got my Hero8 Black last Friday... my 1st ever GoPro, no less... still learning all its features as I speak, yet I am very pleased with it.

Why is there so much compression in the videos in the intro?

I feel like the built-in mounting fingers will break during heavy activities @1:01

I never forget the frame... as it's always around the camera just in case i want to use the GoPro for ANYTHING, other than sitting there.

Great review! I’m thinking the 8 will be a good tool for my videos. Hyper smooth in every resolution and night lapse video are the two features I’m most excited about!

After 6 months of using the Hero 8 I definitely prefer it over the Hero 7 - but mainly due to Hypersmooth 2.0 over anything else! The folding fingers have been bugging me though, much prefer the cage mount option!

Is the footage out of the black really this crappy at 4K?

Everyone is complaining about video quality. The main reason is RU-vid bitrate not the GoPro 8 itself. The video quality is good on steady scenery only, but when you got moving shadows and small objects then youtube low bitrate is showing how bad it is. That is common issue for my riding videos. The footage on PC is always a 100 times better.

Great to see the Hero 8 at last but disappointed we need to wait until December for the Media Mod and the new Microphone add on

The most useful upgrades appear to be software related and could be added to the Hero 7 via a firmware update.

I have a 7 Black. If the price is coming down, I can use a 2nd. I like some of the options the 8 offers. What would be nice is if GoPro could make a Sessions style camera with all these features. Thanks for the review.

I have 7 black + external small mic (rodo) so I can record while I playing music with very good quality. 8 for sure have not better mic than external rodo so Im gonna stay with 7. I thought it will be huge difference but is not.

On my hero7 black it happened sometimes, when the battery was under 60%, that the camera froze while recording. And when recording in darker areas the hypersmooth feature made the footage jerky. Also the touchscreen always did what it want when going under water. I hope these problems are fixed. Also the built in mounting figures look like they break after some time of use, and since they are built in you almost have to replace the camera. Looks for me like planned obsolescence.

I want to take this go pro to night music festivals but I always struggled with low light.. I currently have the go pro 6 how better is the 8 in low light compared to the 6

0:20 now that's what GoPro video looks like. I'd love to know which supped-up sensors they put into the GoPros they use for their commercials, because never EVER are they as good in reality as they are in them! This review proves that perfectly

I think i will consider this because im am still using hero 4 silver due to that mic issue for my motovlogging rather than hero 7 because the adapter mic is so expensive

awesome...any overheating issues? that made me return a Hero 7 Black last year...

7's stability is already top notch. If 8 has more of it then it wont be that much to go for an upgrade. The only upgrade that i can see here is the mods and editing feature on the device where you can also do in your editing app. Unless there's a difference with their camera quality and nightmode festures.

As an avid GoPro user over the years I can honestly say that the difference between the 7 and 8 black is not big enough for me to upgrade my 7. A few nice little extras but 90% of people use a GoPro for simple high quality action cam shots. I'll stick with my 7 and wait for the 9 to come out

Nice and informative. May actually just get the 8 instead of 7. GoPro New Zealand has set an RRP of NZ$668 for it (GoPro 7 currently on sale for NZ$498). The 8 has better mic with wind noise reduction, and much better low light performance, and maybe a new chip, and may address the waterproof and overheating issues from the 7 Black. Hopefully it will have hypersmooth 1.0 at least from GoPro7Black, for 4k60fps video recording cause that's me.

I have had several GoPro's, Hero 6 most current. I've wanted to ask this question for sometime. No matter my settings I cant get enough light in my footage. It has to be a very bright day, or very well lit, to avoid what I perceive as an overall darkness to the footage. In the cnet video footage, in the shadows of the trees is an example of what I mean. Am I doing something wrong or am I expecting too much from the camera?

I have the hero 5 black with the external mic and a rode mic mini with the case that u can put the external mic in and with the cold shoe mount. I still use it and love it. I'm not upgrading till it dies completely still a good gopro

How about on this camera, does the screen lag or screen freeze happens on it as like that HERO 7 Does ??

One question that I would ask is about the battery, has the battery times significantly got better since the 3+ black? Is nice to have extra features but of no use if you keep running out of power.

My GP7 stays in the frame all the time, i never complained about that.

Bummed the lens cover is not replaceable. Turns out the mount is which also worries me. If it’s tiny screws holding it in those could get loose in bumpy action activities.

What are your thoughts about the built-in fingers Mount? Is it enough stable and not so risky for breaking? And even when its mounted on diffrent accessories? Little bit hard to explain in english for me what I mean but maybe you understand what I mean. And what you think of the thing that you cant remove the lens as it was possible in hero7? Myself got a hero 4 silver and want to upgrade Thats why i had many questions :). Best regards from Sweden

Ahhh, but will the Hero 8 overheat in long video shoots like many before it? Or freeze? Here's hoping not since the Sensor, Battery and the Lens are the EXACT same as the Hero 7. And those great "software upgrades" could have easily been provided to those with the Hero 7 via a simple software update! But, all this is just an opinion. And now the lens has been redesigned, those that have or use ND and Polaroid filters will have to repurchase more to fit the new housing if one uses them...or will they fit? Also, the new lens, although being made of Gorilla Glass, is open and exposed to the elements. Scratches will be inevitable IMO. I hope not, but scratches wil come if truly used as an actioncam. Oh, wait, you can purchase GoPro's "insurance" with GoPro PLUS! That $5.00/month more to GoPro, Inc. That's only $60 more per year!

How's the low light?

One thing I don't understand: In older videos comparing gopro 7 to 6, hypersmooth was perfect! Now the hypersoomth of 7 seems to be like hero 6. I believe the hypersmooth of hero 7 is not so bad as it is being shown in recent hero 8 videos.

How long does the battery last in comparison to the 7?

Have been vlogging with the Hero 7 for ages. To be honest this has just really been a software tweak and no doubt could have been added to the Hero 7 as an update. Depends on the price of the audio case, etc. Still not happy about the last camera and its clunky audio adapter which I still never managed to get hold of as out of stock forever. Think to get fully working vlog setup with all its accesories is going to be about same price as a mirroless camera.

so is the GoPro Hero 9 going to have like, a hologram screen or something?
