Thanks for adding the shots with and without the stabilisation, appreciate the extra effort! Just what I was looking for ahead of filming a boat race 👍
Check the original gopro equipment. I assume some cheaper mounts can bring some unwanted noise or rattle. The mount with rubber seal is great, maybe youll find it for sale on ebay or smt :)
Great point! Yeah, perhaps rally or rallycross is a different case. It also very depends on the mount. Some mounts are rubbish and vibrate like crazy, but there are some expensive ones that are solid as a rock :)
Ahh now I finally now why my image is "moving": Its because stabilization is on. On the other hand it gives quite a neat effect as well. I think I keep it on.
HI great job and good explanation thank you I would like to buy the tool that you used to attach your gopro to your car. can you give me the link thank you a lot
For rally driving perhaps the best mount is the one that mounts on the cage. However, I would suggest to leave the stabilization ON, because severe vibration can make the footage unwatchable. Its a pity GoPro don't offer a stabilizer that would stabilize the vibration, but not pan in corners :)
Great tip about the video stabilization. I always thought that my passenger seat, to which I mount my gopro, was moving in corners rather than just some camera setting..
Excellent video my dear friend, very illustrative and complete, all your very valid suggestions are appreciated by the way. Greetings from the City of Lima, Peru.
Thanks Matt for the useful tips you shared. Most of your videos are on smooth roads. Now, if I drive on rough roads / offroads, should I still set Image Stabilisation OFF ? I user Hero 9, where there are 4 options - Off, On, High and Boost.
I'd suggest to keep it On in this case. Its a pity that it still keeps panning while the stabilizer is turned On. I wish GoPro could done a setting specificly for motorsport :) maybe its a matter of time 🤷🏻♂️
Hi Matt. I have a question. I useally film onboards on rallycars but I have a problem with the settings. What would you prefer as settings for onboards in a car that is moving very quicly?? I often have - when its very sunny - great colours in the car but the exposure of the outside is to hell and you don't see a lot of the route/ corners/fields beside the road. Can you propose some features or settings please fot the GoPro 11
Hi there! I would assume, most of the settings can be applied to GoPro11 - these cameras have always been similar in terms how they can be set up. However, rally is a different story. I would never lock the exposure, just set the EV Comp to -1.0, so the view out is OK (not over-exposed). Locking exposure could mean that if you go through a dark forest, it could be tricky to see, and you will need to set it up every time before the stage. Where with EV Comp (exposure compensation), you just hit the "record" and that's it. Another question is Image Stabilizer. If the car is had very solid engine/gearbox mounts and vibrates like hell - it could be good idea to turn it on. However, then you will have the view panning to left or right, as the camera will try to stabilize your image. My honest recommendation is not to be afraid to test different settings and apply these that work the best.
I believe it's possible to lock EV with phone. There are plenty of features and all the controls are much more convenient on the phone. I can double check whenever I'm next to my GoPro and confirm it.
So I do like how with stabilization off it keeps the screen locked in without panning left and right but with the camera mounted to the passenger seat and the car being low, the footage is extremely shaky. Any way to stop this? I wouldn't think so
I would suggest looking for ways to tighten the camera securely. Seat is never an option, as it moves a lot during cornering or braking. I would suggest to mount it on side windows, or, ultimately, if you don't need showing the steering wheel, mounting it directly onto the windscreen from the inside. But then you'd be happy to switch the settings to wider angle (FOV).
@Motoring Matt so just from rearing this and not yet testing, I can already tell this change from the seat mount is already sounding better. As you mentioned the seat moving a lot and how much it actually vibrates. Thank you I will try other placement.
Thanks for your feedback. I don't have enough experience with GoPros and external audio. But that should be a fun thing to investigate. Maybe I will give it a try and make a video about that in future :)
@@motoringmatt I do have an old Corolla AE92 with 4AGE engine, the sound is great when rpm goes up. Right now my car is going under restauration or I might sell it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ebYRY8NqmB4.html However I wanted to make some videos with sound like mountain road. Car video and audio is totally new topic for me, the video capture tricks seems clear from your guidance but I was wondering of the audio when camera inside.
@@tantratron Haha, I completely get you! I had an AE86 as it was my very first personally-owned car. Absolutely loved the sound it made and you are totally on point here :) Cheers!
insanly good and simple to understand Video without all the typical BS, THANKS SO MUCH!!!! tomorrow morning ( sunday) I´ll test everything what you showed!
Perhaps yes. Never thought of this, actually. Phones could record good videos, but you should try to do it to see if it does the job for the onboard videos. I think you should lock the focus because it may have a hard time focusing due to vibrations. I think it will be too difficult to secure the phone firmly.
Great video! I have just ordered my first gopro to record a forthcoming road trip from uk to drive through some famous alpine passes in switzerland including the Furka Pass, then through to the B500 Black Forest road in Germany. I will fit my camera to the front screen so will experiment with linear or wide and your other suggested settings before the trip. I will time lapse the long stretches of motorways but record all the mountain roads in real time but hear that these cameras have a tendency to overheat. What post edit app would you suggest i use on my Mac?
It really depends on your set of editing skills. Davinci Resolve is an epic tool for post-production, but sometimes I even use such a simple app as an iMovie. If you need just to trim/cut clips and put together a video, it may be perfect, since it is very easy to use.
Hi Matt, do you think a Gopro works well without stabilization and some hi frequencies due to the engine (gopro rigid mounted on the rollcage)? Actually I try two different smartphone and the result is horrible.
Hey. Thanks for the question. In my opinion, if the camera is mounted securely, there shouldn't be any issues with the quality. Personally, I always use GoPro without a stabilizer for onboard videos. However, once I experienced bad footage even though the camera looked to be secured properly. It turned out, the road surface was too bumpy (or imperfect) and that affected the final result. To sum up, I can't really tell a thing or two about the smartphone camera performance, but an action camera with the stabilizer turned off should be good enough on the track.
Also, I forgot to mention this thing: the major difference between an action camera and a smartphone is the fact, that action cameras don't have a focusing system. GoPro, for instance, has everything in focus from 70mm to infinity. In this particular situation smartphones may be too busy trying to get an image in focus. If it's possible - you can try to set the manual focus to infinity (or 20-30 meters) and then try to turn the image stabilizer OFF. But take note: the camera should be secured VERY firmly.
