You kept the best story until last! I've enjoyed this at so many levels: 1. you two chatting to each other is fantastic to listen to, to pick up conversational Spanish, 2. your encouragement that we let go of the fear of making mistakes when we're speaking 3. the dilemma of whether to correct or not - that constantly being corrected breaks the flow and concentration but not being corrected can have us repeatedly making errors 4. that our memory is enhanced by strong emotional experiences. I belong to a conversation practice group where don't teach or correct each other and we have a lot of laughs and thoroughly enjoy the process of communicating in Spanish. To me, practice without constant corrections is an important tool in the toolkit - and very often, given the space, we can tell for ourselves what errors we're making and correct ourselves. When I first arrived to live in Barcelona (not there now though) I tried to order strong coffee and ended up asking for an extra shit instead of an extra shot. The waitress fell about laughing and then spent five patient minutes explaining to me where I went wrong. It's one of my happiest memories of my time living in Spain - and all due to making a mistake! My learning from that was that it's not the mistake that we fear - it's how people react. Reoccurring errors haunt us all! 🤷🏽♀️ In the States many people say “ No problemo” and they think they’re being cute. Not sure how this developed. It’s an expression used in books and movies too.
I WISH Spanish speakers corrected me more when I make mistakes - not every mistake because there are far too many, but at least correct the recurring mistakes!
To be fair, it is unrealistic to expect people to correct you unless you are in a learning environment. Most Spanish are simply looking to understand you and nothing more, they possibly don't have the grammatical knowledge to correct you nor do your errors bother them. My suggestion to you is find a learning partner ie an intercambio, meet regularly for conversation and correct each other, and talk about the errors.
It's only when you watch this, do you realise how good Gordon's Spanish is! (It almost sounds shocking when he reverts back to English) You also realise that Cynthia is achieving something that very few women do...........actually getting more attractive as she gets older!!

Hola Gordon, Tuve un tiempo similar con el padre de mi novia como tuviste. Entré el salón para reunir con la familia la primera vez, me ofrecieron a sentar en una silla de madera con dos cojines finas encima. Les dije " es muy cómodo, tiene dos cojones " pues, todos reyeron y una buena manera de romper de hielo. Fin.
Comité casi el mismo error. Estaba describiendo un problema con animales en el huerto de la casa y dije “los cojones comen todas mis plantas”. Lo que quería decir era “conejos”. 😂. Nos reímos mucho.
Es verda!! cuando dije a un grupo de personas en Guatemala tengo hombre en vez de tengo hambre ellos se reían de mí mucho entonces ahora siempre recuerdo tengo hambre😂
Creo que la gente tiene un poco de miedo de que se considere pedante cuando corrige. Porque todo el mundo se rie a un "grammar nazi". Pues, excepto en Francia donde te ignoran con lo mas minimo error en Frances.
After a year of being tutored weekly, I was really off my game one night (it was a long hot day) and said , "Estoy caliente y tengo hombre...." I meant to say that I was hot in temperature and that I was hungry! We laughed a lot over that one. I'm hot stuff and I have man. LOL

Le dije a la chica, mientras ella estaba preparando la torta, “Me gusta jabón” sin darme cuenta lo que dije. Ella me miró con una pequeña sonrisa. De repente me di cuenta el error y me puse rojo en total. Un momento gracioso y inolvidable! De todas formas es parte de pelear con un idioma extranjero.
This is a very popular topic! On the same user generated conversation about corrections, all of it comes back around to conversations. As a Scorpio, I have a very difficult time making conversation because I´m always planning things with Satan or, I´m bashing my idiot neighbors or, I´m talking about how hot someone is. These are non-starters despite the joy they bring me. Still, when people flee from your presence and that´s not your intent (note the wording), it´s time to bring in some educational resources. Spaniards read far more than Americans and they love what they read. Hábitos Atómicos is the current must read. Reading what others read, Cynthia´s Book Club, for example, is a great way to converse and learn corrections together! For the really hopeless loser like me, a book called Conversar, Aprenda Cómo Dominar la Conversación is excellent. At first it sounds like it was written by Greta Thornburg but, it gets good at Chapter 3.
1. Las palabras importado en el español por los griegos se termina en -ma, -pa, y -ta y a pesar de que tienen la terminación -a, son masculinas. 2. Es importante aprender las palabras juntos la carné (identification card), la carne (meat), bebe, bebé pero no hay muchos, ¿no? Los demás son homófonos. Mira, os pido información sobre los homos. ¡Sois expertos de TODO, digo yo! Gordon, #3 no es nada fácil, tío. Rebusqué instantes para cuando podamos encontrar la igualdad de «de + pronombre» para hacer la frase adverbial o lo que sea y me mira la RAE a mí y me dijo «buena suerte y, cuando se la encuentre llámanos. ...¡Por el amor de Dios! Gordon, me tarda un año completo en llegar a la pronunciación de hablAsteis en vez de hablastéis, todas las formas de vosotros pretérito simple. Y los españoles, todo el tiempo, «sí, es correcto»...¿Cuál? ..Sí. ¡Ay!

Pase muchos anos en Espana y aprendi sobre la marcha, nunca tuvo la oportunidad de aprender atraves de clases y aunque hablo bastante bien hay errores a la hora de escribir e incluso leer. Creo que el problema es que nos enseñan cuando empezamos a aprender español que la mayoría de los sustantivos que terminan en “a” son femeninos. Finalmente comencé a usar “el” o “los” con la mayoría de los sustantivos terminaban en “ma”. Pienso que “ma is usually a man”. También tenía problemas con “aa”. El agua - las aguas.
Franklin, supongo que, según uno avanza con el español, las explicaciones tienen que introducir las excepciones y más explicaciones. A un beginner darle tanta información de golpe al principio no sería de ayuda. Una buena base es, generalmente 0= masculino y A= femenino. Para empezar. Luego se puede hablar de palabras femeninas con determinante singular en masculino, etc. Cx
I actually thought agua was masculine until the other day… When I got an exercise wrong on DuoLingo Apparently agua is always feminine, but “La agua” would sound weird (or devolve into “Lagua”) Entonces, se dice “el agua”
Thanks Cynthia I’m sure that is the reason for teaching that way. I’m a slow learner and it took forever before I realized the words I a ran across ending in “ma” all turned out to be masculine. It also went a long time hearing people say “si” and asking myself “Why are they saying ‘YES’ all the time?”.
