You have to realize that this is the DeBarge family. Consequently the entire group is the presentation. The harmonies....that smooth chorus...this is a group that rivaled the Jacksons and they were from the Motown mill. They just didn't get the promotion that they deserved. Michigan groups truly rocked...back in the day. And "Bunny" DeBarge...was FINE...as well as being a great singer.

El killed the high notes but people need to put respect on Randy's name when it comes to this masterpiece 👌🏾

Imagine be 51, having grown up on Debarge and only learning recently that this is both El and his brother Randy singing this song. El took the "high" parts. I use quotes because it's all relative. A classic...pure/true R&B cut. Great reaction.

Most people think it’s only El Debarge singing lead on this song. It’s actually Randy who sings the verses and El sang the hook and outro. Randy also played bass on this while El was on keys.

To clear up the confusion: Randy DeBarge is leading here. El DeBarge sings the “I like the way you comb your hair…” part and the high notes at the end. They actually share the adlibs. If you listen closely, you can hear that Randy has a softer voice. El’s voice is higher & brighter.

It’s a falsetto. The lead singer. Interesting fact: Their father was a raging alcoholic. They suffered terribly growing up. Their story is similar to that of The Silvers in the 70s. All super talented. Their older brothers were in another successful group from the 70s called Switch.

Two of Switch's members are the older brothers of DeBarge; they are easy to spot cause they look just like the guys in DeBarge. And they have that same high tenor going on, or as we use to say The DeBarge Sound.

Debarge is one of my favorite groups of all time vocally. Those sweet falsettos run in the family. El is the one on lead vocals but he literally sounds just like his brother who sang lead on a number of songs for the group Switch. You should try doing some of their music as well. Switch came out before Debarge released an album.

Listen to "A Dream" by Debarge. The girl, who the family called Bunny (i think it was because she was one of the few girls in their 10 children who basically born "pink" so that's where Bunny came from). They were the first biracial group that was signed to Motown when Jermaine Jackson was working in the studio and in the offices trying to find talent. He came across the first DeBarge band called Switch. They played their own instruments and had 2 hit songs: "They'll never be" and "I call your name". Switch lead singer was a Debarge brother and introduced his siblings to Jermaine on tape. He liked it and told him to get them to Hollywood so they could audition. They got a record deal and got more hits than Switch. Unfortunately, the brother in Switch passed away from AIDS from drug use when he was really young. Actually, they all did drugs but they're all off of them now. Also I heard the youngest boy in Debarge used to be married to Janet Jackson only because her father hated him. They ended up having it annulled in a year and a half when she saw him using cocaine. She was only 19 at the time. But I'm sure there is an Unsung about the story of Switch and Debarge. Check it out.

Biggie's One More Chance or Ashanti's Foolish both use DeBarge samples--the sample actually (Stay With Me), and they have numerous movie soundtrack credits. They also have a terrifyingly traumatic back story--centering their father, Bobby DeBarge (former co-founder, lead singer of the famous 70's soul group Switch) and also the female member, Bunny DeBarge. They were the great competitor group to the Jackson5 - and frankly were way more innovative and avant-garde ... but drugs and alcohol consumed their consummate talent. El is still a god in my books. His falsetto his timing and his utter charm are forever beguiling
