The Debarge family had a rough life -- grew up in Detroit and Grand Rapids, mixed race with an abusive father. Their mother had them in church and was a singer, so they were always brought up with an appreciation for music. There were ten kids, eight boys and two girls. The oldest two boys, Bobby (#2) and Tommy (#3), were a part of a Motown group called Switch that had some moderate success in the late 1970s. Bobby has the sweetest, purest voice of all the brothers -- "I Call Your Name" is probably his magnum opus, but really any Switch cut offers dynamic proof of his talent. Bobby got his older sister Bunny (#1) and younger brothers Randy (#4), Marty #5), and El (#6) a deal with Motown to perform as the group DeBarge. Their first album as a quartet didn't go far, but the next year, they released the "All This Love" album with their younger brother James (#7) now in the group and it was a success ("I Like It" is on this album). They followed with a couple more albums before El and Bunny went solo; Bunny didn't find much success alone, but El has had hit and miss success over the years. Younger brother Chico (#8) had a moderate solo hit back in the 1980s and with his 1997 hit "No Guarantee." The youngest two are fraternal twins, Peaches and Darrell, who goes by "Young DeBarge" and has also released music. Only Peaches has not pursued music. The Debarge family is a part of two successful groups. Switch (1977) with Bobby Debarge, one of the best falsetto to ever do it. He is the older brother of the family. His younger siblings formed the group Debarge around 1982 or 83. El Debarge is the falsetto for this group. You should listen to "They'll never be" by Switch to hear Bobby's voice. Phillip Ingram (James Ingram's younger brother) is also a part of this group. You'll love them as well!

And FYI, DeBarge is the name of the group, and it's their family name; they're all siblings. They were deemed the next Jackson 5 at one point during the 80s. When you hear the name DeBarge, you probably are thinking directly about arguably the most popular member of the group, El DeBarge, the vocalist of most of their songs.

For years I thought the family was Puerto Rican because of the names they used for showbiz. It wasn't until I saw the documentary on them that I found out they're biracial black and white. Maybe it was the studio's strategy to market them that way. The lead singer went by the name EL Debarge. The EL is short for Eldra. There's a James, Robert (Bobby), Bunny, Jonathan (who goes by the stage name Chico). This family has faced lots of issues, but several months ago I watched Sheila E.'s YT channel and EL guest appeared. He is back making music again. I was so happy to hear that. His God given gift doesn't deserve to go to waste. I'm so glad he found his passion for singing again. Good singing these days...especially for R&B music is being buried and destroyed by the music studio industry.

People think Debarge is just one person because a lot of the brothers sound similar to each other. Just like on this song, one brother (Randy) is singing the verses while another (El) is singing the chorus and takes it home at the end. Then there is a brother named Bobby who is in the group Switch with a very similar voice. Because El DeBarge is the most popular of the siblings, they just think he is singing all these iconic songs by himself, but he's not.

There's so many FANTASTIC DeBarge songs to react to and they are sampled so much so you will be able to spot the connection/inspiration for many other songs. I'd recommend: A Dream, Stay, Share my World, All this love, Queen of my heart, I'm in love with you ...to name a few 😅 Last year I came up as the top 2% listeners of Debarge on Spotify. DeBarge family actually had several brothers and sisters. Ten, I think. Reminds me of the Sylvers who had either 9 or 10 children as well. Both families had it rough growing up, but both super talented families!
