It's incredible how much the climate of superhero TV has changed since the cancellation of Gotham in 2019, but it still deserves to be remembered, and it still deserves a future.

Gotham is an American superhero crime drama television series developed by Bruno Heller, produced by Warner Bros. Television and based on characters from the Batman mythos in comic books published by DC Comics. The series originally aired on Fox from September 22, 2014, to April 25, 2019, over five seasons, comprising a total of 100 episodes. It features an ensemble cast that includes Ben McKenzie as James "Jim" Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, and David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne. The show follows Gordon's early days at the Gotham City Police Department following the murder of Bruce's parents, as well as the origin stories of Batman's infamous rogues gallery.
Development for a prequel series based on Batman began in September 2013, with Bruno Heller hired by Fox to serve as a writer and executive producer. In March 2014, Fox originally ordered 16 episodes for its first season before expanding it to 22. Filming primarily took place across New York City. In May 2018, Fox renewed the series for a fifth and final season, consisting of 12 episodes, which premiered on January 3, 2019, and concluded on April 25, 2019. A prequel series, Pennyworth, starring Jack Bannon as a younger version of the iteration of Alfred Pennyworth portrayed by Sean Pertwee in Gotham, began airing on Epix in July 2019.[2][3][4]

I avoided Gotham for a long time because I HATE the "lets make a superhero show without the superhero!" gimmick. But I kept seeing appreciation for it as time went on and finally gave it a go and LOVED it. It kinda plays like a if Batman Forever had a prequel show. It's bold and colorful and campy and highly entertaining. If the darker elements of Schumacher's original Batman Forever were retained, I feel like it would play kinda like Gotham. How a network TV Gotham show managed to have more memorable and impressive visuals than many superhero films today speaks to just how lazy a certain superhero franchise has gotten. Gotham itself has real personality and feels lived in and not just a generic setting for the settings. And the character work is largely very well done and satisfying to see.

Gotham is the most underrated comic book show. I love it! Even season 5 despite easily being the weakest season and filled with issues I think also had a lot of great ideas and themes and honestly was pretty decent. It’s one of the few comic book shows to have a 22 episode template and make it work. It also some of the best depictions of those characters. Robin Lord Taylor will always be my Penguin and Cameron Monoghan will always be my joker.

Great video! And I agree about Gotham’s “Joker Problem” however I always had a way to fix the “Joker Problem”. Instead of killing off Jerome they should've let him live and still had Jeremiah come into the plot, so fans of either character still had their version of Joker in the show. Also each of them would’ve had a different reason for obsessing over Bruce. Jeremiah is focused on Bruce because of his friendship with him while Jerome is focused on Bruce because of his hatred. Then come season 5 for, whatever reason, they all, Jerome, Jeremiah, and Bruce, converge at Ace Chemicals and both Jerome and Jeremiah fall into the chemical. Then later we see that only one came out leaving the mystery of who it is since they’re burnt/scarred beyond recognition and their memory could be affected/wiped since they fell into acid. Fans could speculate about which one it is while also leaving speculation about if the other brother is still out there.

Well thought, the idea is similar to something I wrote five years ago on Pup's Alternate final part2 video. If you interested to read, here is the full comment, it gives some idea on how this plotline could be set: Sorry for the long text but this might interest you guys. I got recently a sketch of a strange idea so how Gotham could have done differently with the Joker origin story. This idea would “solve” the following “issues”: - Keep the beloved Jerome alive - Have a Joker with semi unknown identity - (+bonus) Have Jeremiah and Jerome at the same time as both “Half/Protos Jokers” In this scenario Jerome never dies in 4x18 and instead framed again at Arkham with the help of Jeremiah. In a similar fashion than Batman Telltale, Jeremiah would have to spread the insanity gas on Wayne’s Enterprise board employees in 4x20, as they discovered that Jeremiah’s technology can be used with wrong intentions and wanted to keep the generator safe from him, doesn’t trusting Jerome’s brother. As Jerome followers break in, they force Bruce to wear a gas mask, but strangely the gas doesn’t affect Jeremiah, that’s here he would remove is makeup to reveal he was already exposed to it. Most of the events happens the same until Ace Chemicals episode, where Jerome would break from Arkham. Then Jerome wants to disrupt Jeremiah plans in order to throw the city even more the chaos in the city (could have been the part of spreading the chemicals into the river) and at the same time challenging Bruce to stop him, definitely bounding them in a Mark Hamillesque Batman/Joker relationship. Feeling that would compromise is own plan regarding Bruce (Parents re-murder), Jeremiah pushes Jerome into the chemicals. Bruce would attempt to save him but instead we would have the same kind of scene as 4x18 with Jerome’s death, and Jerome would let himself fall into chemicals. Then Bruce and Jeremiah confronts as the same as 5x07, and Jeremiah falls too in the chemicals. Here is the fun part: the twins are extracted from chemicals with severe injuries, one of them as definelty died from severe burns, and the other is still alive but with no brain activity. The thing as their body and face are so severely damaged and they share the same DNA, it’s impossible to know which one survived and which one died, the surviving twin would be called J Valeska instead or Jerome or Jeremiah. 10 years after, Jim would ask him if he was Jeremiah or Jerome while attempting to save is daughter. J would responds a cryptic manner that would suggest he knows who he really is but playing with it in Nolan’s Joker manner, adopting the behaviour of both Jeremiah and Jerome at the same time to maintain the ambiguity. At the end, there is no way to know who is really is J. That all, I’m conscious that this idea is quite a sketch but I find it enough interesting to share it.

Sadly the closest thing we got to a Gotham continuation was that mediocre *Batwoman* show... in the sense that Gotham's Renée Montoya came back for Batwoman season 3, still played by Victoria Cartagena. And the Victor Zsasz from that show (played by Alex Morf, that we had already seen in Gotham season 5) was very, _very_ clearly inspired by Anthony Carrigan's incarnation of the character. There are a couple other nods to the show in it, but I don't recommend watching it just for that; or at all. For every good thing in *Batwoman* (solid Luke Fox/Batwing, solid Poison Ivy in season 3, really good Black Mask as the season 2 Big Bad, etc) , there are 10 terrible ones

the way that Gotham is depicted in The Batman reminded me of Gotham a lot. However the way Bruce is acting in the Batman wouldn’t fit into Gotham’s Bruce Wayne, because David Mazouz’s Bruce is no longer as angry about his parents death as Robert Pattinson’s Bruce seemed to be.
@randallflagg3700
@randallflagg3700 Год назад
@@luisz222 - Damn right. I'm a massive *Gotham* fanboy, but I have no problem admitting that the show feels like an Elseworlds story, since Bruce made peace with the show's Joe Chill (aka Matches Malone) much earlier than usual, and let go of his angst before he fully transitioned into Batman. Recently, *Batman: 3 Jokers* (damn, already 3 years old??) also did a very touching scene in which Bruce forgave Chill and held his hand as he was dying... Reminded me of *Gotham* 's : "I wished you were a monster... but you're just a man" The Batman that would have resulted from 5 seasons of *Gotham* would have been very interesting, he's already dealt with some of his biggest early problems, like the mob wars between Falcone & Maroni, the Red Hood gang & Joker's becoming, he's already met with Ra's al Ghul and killed him (well, Barbara kinda forced his hand) and now his daughter Nyssa wants revenge... It also seems like it's one of these Earths in which there aren't other superheros, like how in *Superman & Lois* (season 3 airing right now), it's been stated that Superman was the only super-powered hero. Diggle has made references to Green Arrow in season 1, and we learn that he died, but sounds like his team didn't include Ragman and Black Canary (the Dinah Drake one) Anyway, the Batman that would have emerged from *Gotham* would have probably been one that would have been eager to create a Justice League of sorts, like how Green Arrow did in *Arrow* when he finally chilled out and stopped killing people left and right. At least, that's my headcanon... David Mazouz was so good, it would be a real shame if he never got to play Batman... even if it's just a small role, like Iain Glein in *Titans* or Kevin Conroy in *Crisis on Infinite Earths* ... honestly I feel like if it were to happen, a small cameo would be the best we could realistically hope for. It's a shame they didn't get Mazouz to make a small scene in *Titans* season 4's episode "Dude, where is my Gar?" , for which they got Brec Bassinger (aka *Stargirl* ) to show up on set for just one day, and got her to film a short scene with Beast Boy...

I think what was so good about it is that it gave very unique and interesting versions of characters. These were really good live action portrayals. Every character from the penguin, the riddler, scarecrow, hugo strange, had a distinict personality, and this immediately became my favorite version of Jim Gordon. He was incredibly good as the lead. No non-sense tough cop was a really good foil for all these super freaks, and he got to be a father figure to bruce, fill the void of his parents

The first couple seasons of Arrow definitely helped me when I was in a really dark place... When Arrow started, I was constantly in trouble and dealing with mental health stuff, and for some reason, the first season helped me get my life centered properly. Then when season 2 started, I was put in a RTF facility, and when I got out aftsr 6 months in there, the show helped me find a way to re-adjust to being back home. The facility I was in really did a lot to break me mentally, and when I got out, I felt totally hollow and angry, much like Oliver did in the first season, and watching his character adjust to normal life and leave the truama behind, I was able to relate and work through things in my life too... Its one of the reasons I loved that show for the first few seasons.

I don't care if they never call him the Joker or if it's technically Jeremiah who's supposed to be the clown Prince of crime, Cameron Monaghan as Jerome Valeska is the best on-screen Joker there's ever been. 1. Harvey Bullock was one of the police officers in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman, so his appearance in Gotham is actually his second live action rendition, much more comic accurate. 2. Gotham got the reaction it did from the audience because it was marketed and promoted as a Batman series without a Batman, when the reality was-- this series answered the question, "What if Dick Tracy was named Jim Gordon and lived and worked in Gotham before Batman appeared?" 3. I absolutely agree that there are three inarguably standout performances on this show-- with several notable runners up-- Penguin and Riddler, who received the blessings of a five-season character story arc and development, and Alfred, the oft-overlooked manservant of the Wayne's, exploring his character challenge of caring for a PTSD child who would one day grow up to be the world's greatest detective. Notable mentions: Zsasz, a very stylish and metrosexual contract killer. Joker -- who's only drawback was that the series couldn't decide on which Joker origin to go with. Hugo Strange -- BD Wong could have phoned this one in, but the character was so nicely set up, it wouldn't have mattered. I would love to point that out that while it was airing, the only show on television that was even remotely close to the insanity that this show presented each week was Riverdale. And that's a pretty impressive claim. LOL

You're wrong about Harvey Bullock being in Tim Burton's *Batman 89* ... apparently he was originaly supposed to show up in *Batman Returns* but Tim Burton decided to remove him from the script. *Gotham* was his first live action appearance, and Donal Logue did a great job... I agree with you about pretty much everything else though. Anthony Carrigan's Victor Zsasz wasn't comic accurate at all, but the character was so much fun that i stopped caring about accuracy pretty quick. They even paid an homage to his version of the character in the (terrible) show *Batwoman* , in which Zsasz (played by fellow *Gotham* co-star Alex Morf) is clearly based on the *Gotham* version. Like in *Gotham* , he plays a killer for hire instead of just being a serial killer, and he uses all kinds of weapons (including a rocked launcher like in "Gotham") instead of only using knives... he also has a sense of humor, makes little quips, and dresses very stylishly instead of being a complete psycho who is most often running around shirtless.

Here me out: A sequel movie wherein Jeremiah takes son the moniker of the Joker and assembles the Criminal Underworld of Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman to take on Batman. Meanwhile, Batman (played by David Mazouz, naturally) has to bring together Robin and Batgirl to stop them. And maybe Harvey Dent becomes Two-Face.

But Penguin uses everyone and all actions to rule everyone. Survivor and “brain” off villains?

I just finished rewatching this and rewatching it led me to more questions than answers lol (in a good way). You're not wrong about it being kinda cheap to have a twin brother for the Joker. But it was executed very well (the change from being sane to not). Also, I feel like they did this intentionally to give us both versions of the Joker we all love. Jerome was the really psychotic one that were familiar with in the games and animated content. But with Jeremiah, the gave us a flashback to the more gangster style, crime boss, whilst still being over the top version of Joker that we had way back in the day.

Gotham made a lot of VERY ballsy moves that I think payed off well in ways that dont get enough credit. 1. The revamping of Mr. Freeze's revamping with Nora. That shit was heatbreaking. 2. Having Mad Hatter be a hypnotist who controls his victims with a watch OMG I JUST REMEMBERED THE WHITE RABBIT HAD A WATCH 3. Hugo Strange's experiments are responsible for freakish villains like Killer Croc, Man-Bat, and Clayface 4. Using a lot of NEW villains that even casual Batman fans might not know about (Jane Doe, Dollmaker, Mother, Cornelius Stirk) 5. Azrael being the inspiration for Batman to take up vigilante crime. 6. Adopting the silver age storyline of Bruce being a masked vigilante as a kid. 7. Having this version of Harley Quinn (Echo, I know) be more like a quiet mime for a while. 8. Depicting a young Bruce Wayne as being adorably naive about the criminal underworld. Also, how is it that a Batman show on FOX is allowed to use more Batman characters than the CW?
@randallflagg3700
@randallflagg3700 Год назад
The Mr Freeze origin story was definitely one of the best moments of the show for me... _"Mr Freeze/A Dead Man Feels No Cold"_ is one of my favorite "mini-arcs". It's such a shame that after that he was relegated to elite mook status... Plus, not only was his first appearance in the *Gotham* universe, in the web-series *Gotham Stories* (which canonically takes place in the break at the middle of season 2) which was pretty cool with beautiful drawings (some are shown in this very video by Pup) and excellent voice acting, but sadly not a lot of people even watched it... But Freeze was then supposed to have a large role in *Gotham* season 5, which was cut short when they needed to make the season much shorter. And about the CW not being able to use more Batman characters than FOX... I don't think that's true? They were able, in the Arrowverse, to use Bruce Wayne, Kate Kane (Batwoman), Luke Fox (Batwing), important bat-rogues like Harvey Dent, Ra's al Ghul, Poison Ivy, Deadshot, Amanda Waller, Tommy Eliott (Hush), Lincoln March and the Court of Owls, Joe Chill, and many many others.

Look bro I'm 41, and time is like depth: you get better at recognizing it as you get older. But instead of getting better at seeing real life 3d, you are suddenly experiencing the 4th dimension, time, more efficiently. This often comes with a perspective of a swifter passing of time. Sorry to break it to you; time doesn't slow down, it gets faster as we get older.

I used to call this show "Crazy Town" and loved because the it wasn't just Bruce Wayne and featured villains, Gotham itself was a character. Especially I remember an episode where office workers were forced into a death match and they were attacking each over with staplers and receipt spikes! The was a crazy element in the whole city that encouraged the lunacy, just as another was horrified by it. Where else would Batman be, but in the craziest city ever. As I type this I've been watching the 3rd and final season of BATWOMEN. It was "clever" how they saved the show after the first season, but by the third there are few characters to care about, and they all seem to degenerate to petty squabbles. Alice seems like a missed attempt at craziness. The connection with GOTHAM though, is that this is the city AFTER Batman is gone, whereas GOTHAM was what it was like BEFORE Batman. In Batwoman, all we have is imitators and copycats.
