Gott Erhalte Franz den Kaiser is an old Holy Roman Imperial Hymn that came to represent Emperor Francis II (Francis I of Austria), written with updated lyrics in 1826. The Austrian version of Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser was written by Lorenz Leopold Haschka and the melody was by Franz Joseph Haydn. Gott Erhalte Franz den Kaiser was used from 1826 until the death of Francis II in 1835. After his death, the lyrics were changed to "God Bless the High Son of Austria, our Emperor Ferdinand!" for Ferdinand I, who ruled Austria until he abdicated in 1848. Gott Erhalte Franz den Kaiser was also used for Ferdinand's successor, Franz Joseph, from 1848 until 1867. When the Austrian Empire became the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1867, Gott erhalte, Gott beschutze became the anthem, and remained that way until 1918. The verse that includes Otto von Habsburg was written in 1922, by monarchists who sought to restore the Austrian Empire. Since the monarchy was never restored, the verse that mentions Otto von Habsburg never achieved official standing. While today, Austria uses Mozart's music as their anthem, Haydn's original music is now the current German Anthem, Das Deutschlandlied.
4:25: This verse was written in 1922 for Otto von Habsburg. After his father, Karl I, the last Emperor of Austria-Hungary, died in that year, monarchists were seeking to restore the throne with Otto as the Emperor. Otto von Habsburg renounced all rights to the Imperial throne in 1968, but remained the Head of the House of Habsburg until his death in 2011. The current head of the House of Habsburg is Otto's son, Karl von Habsburg, and the heir-apparent is a race car driver named Ferdinand von Habsburg.
This verse never achieved official status, as the monarchy was never restored, and while Otto von Habsburg did return to Austria in 1928, he came back not to be Emperor. He remained in Austria until the Anschluss and was lucky enough to flee to the United States in 1938. He stayed in America until 1948, which is when he returned to become the first president of the Second Austrian Republic. In 1968, after Austria joined the EU, he became Austria's Representative in the European Parliament, which he remained until 1999. Also, in 1968, Otto von Habsburg formally renounced all rights to the defunct Imperial throne, so this stanza is even more unofficial than it had been before.
Every European Monarchy (except Spain): I will use God Save the King, and hope nobody would notice... Austria-Hungary: You fools! I have the best anthem ever, and nobody can take that from me. Weimar Republic: Hey, Austria, can we borrow your melody? Austria-Hungary: Only if that song does not become the motto of the most evil ideology in the world. Weimar Republic: Of course! Hitler: Deutschland, Deutschland, uber alles, uber alles in der Welt... Germany: Crap!
