Dusty Baker saw almost the same play unwind before his eyes in 1981. This is the infamous not-called interference on Reggie Jackson during the Yankees@Dodgers World Series. I was a certified high school umpire, now retired; this MLB crew got it wrong, sadly. Batter/runner can be in fair territory there, but not outside the 3 foot baseline. Being out of the base path, whether the batter makes a specific move to swat at the ball or something such in that case is moot. It was interference. If batter was in legal base path, then umpire would be correct. I didn't watch this game live, but I have not seen if the crew looked at a replay or not. They should have, I think.

@TheSemiAnnualAthlete
@TheSemiAnnualAthlete 2 года назад
I doubt it’ll be changed. Because the base path rule for first base comes in two parts. Establishing your base path to start which is on the grass. The second part to that is half way down the line he has to get to the outside of the foul line. So because the play happened in the first 45ft of Grandal running it is legal. Them changing the base path rule will inhibit righties from ever running on the grass. Putting them at a disadvantage and potentially cause them to be out instantly because they’d have to in theory step on home plate to get to that outer half right away.
@sjsupa
@sjsupa 2 года назад
@@TheSemiAnnualAthlete No! The change can be made such that if the ball does not hit you, do whatever you want to do; but if the ball hits you while you are on the grass, you are out. A righty runns 1 step on the grass would not touch the incoming ball.

@ThePdog3k
@ThePdog3k 2 года назад
Yeah, because his coaches taught him to do this in a situation like this. In baseball, you drill things over and over to the point where when a ball is hit, you know EXACTLY what you are going to do in virtually every circumstance. You are in a state of infinite actions at once, depending on where and how the ball is hit determines what your action ends up being. So if you think that he didn't have a plan to intentionally run into the path of the ball as soon as it was hit(he CAN see the trajectory of the ball off the bat, and he can use where he is standing as a point of reference), you're not only delusional, you just know absolutely nothing about baseball. He clearly takes steps to the left FOR NO REASON as soon as the ball is hit. Because he knows that will legally put him in the path of the play.
@bbmikej
@bbmikej 2 года назад
@@ThePdog3k And? Did he intentionally take this line? Of course he did. He knew what he was doing. But the main fact is that he established it as his base path immediately. I've done some umpiring over the years. The whole running out of the base "path" thing is a tricky call to make. Every coach wants it called when they're on defense. I like that you mentioned that a tag has to be "attempted on the runner". Basically after having established his path, deviating(3 feet) from that path once a tag is attempted could be considered running out of the base path. Now what is a "tag attempt"? That's another ball of wax. Some judgment and good common sense by the umpire is required for the running out the base path call to be made. As for making a "travesty of the game", I've heard of Runners running straight for right field from first on a double steal. It confuses the defense just long enough for the run from third to score. And because no tag attempt has yet been made on the runner from first, the Run could score before the defense can make the out on the runner from first. Technically it's legal but it is a travesty in my opinion.

Accorcing to Umpire Bible; The first and most important thing to know about the base path is that there is no such thing as a base path (none exists) until a play is made on a runner. The base path is established when a fielder with the ball attempts to tag a runner. Then, and only then, is there a base path. And the base path is a straight line from the runner's position to the base to which he is advancing or retreating.

Just further evidence that cheating is rampant in baseball all the way down to little league, all it does is hammer home the selective bias that cheating is OK as long as it's your team. Bending the rule completely out of the way of the spirit of the game is OK as long as it benefits YOUR team.

When I was playing in the Frontier League (independent semi pro), had a similar situation. Only difference was that I saw the ball coming, so I moved out of the way and the catcher was able to get the ball and take out the runner at home. I didn't know that if I had let the ball hit me, I would've been safe and the runner would've scored.

This reminds me of some of the old rules mentioned in the Ken Burns doc, like running directly from 1st to third, or subbing yourself "in" whenever a ball flies at you in the dugout (that one'e my fav. "King" Kelly would stand up and yell "Kelly now fielding for Boston!" and catch the fly ball)

I wish you would have analyzed the ball hitting him a little more. You could see that he did alter his arm motion to glance the ball. He raises his shoulder just enough and you can see that his arm motions are consistent until the ball is thrown and then adjusts his arm just enough to alter the ball.

@dutchvalleypitbikes
@dutchvalleypitbikes 2 года назад
@@deusvult6920 I know it wasn’t a super obvious “chicken wing” move, but I feel he widened himself with a deliberate attempt to alter the ball’s path. He did it in a very subtle way that would make it nearly impossible to call, which really just makes it a good move I guess. Just my personal observation. I’ve been wrong plenty of times before.

Bud, watch it again in slow motion. When the ball would have hit the ground the glove is right under it. The ball strikes the tip of the leather and you can see clear deflection of the leather in the pocket and see grass through the window of the pocket which let's you know the glove didn't touch the ground. The ripple of the leather is consistent with the ball striking the very tip of the glove and as the scooping motion continues the ball is caught in the pocket. It was a smooth as fuck clean and fair catch. It's an out and there is absolutely no way to dispute it. The slow motion of the play has a very clear view that shows the ball never touches the ground.
@awenoldschwatzanegga
