I was a certified high school umpire, now retired; this MLB crew got it wrong, sadly. Batter/runner can be in fair territory there, but not outside the 3 foot baseline. Being out of the base path, whether the batter makes a specific move to swat at the ball or something such in that case is moot. It was interference. If batter was in legal base path, then umpire would be correct. I didn't watch this game live, but I have not seen if the crew looked at a replay or not. They should have, I think.

I doubt it’ll be changed. Because the base path rule for first base comes in two parts. Establishing your base path to start which is on the grass. The second part to that is half way down the line he has to get to the outside of the foul line. So because the play happened in the first 45ft of Grandal running it is legal. Them changing the base path rule will inhibit righties from ever running on the grass. Putting them at a disadvantage and potentially cause them to be out instantly because they’d have to in theory step on home plate to get to that outer half right away.

@ThePdog3k
@ThePdog3k 2 года назад
Yeah, because his coaches taught him to do this in a situation like this. In baseball, you drill things over and over to the point where when a ball is hit, you know EXACTLY what you are going to do in virtually every circumstance. You are in a state of infinite actions at once, depending on where and how the ball is hit determines what your action ends up being. So if you think that he didn't have a plan to intentionally run into the path of the ball as soon as it was hit(he CAN see the trajectory of the ball off the bat, and he can use where he is standing as a point of reference), you're not only delusional, you just know absolutely nothing about baseball. He clearly takes steps to the left FOR NO REASON as soon as the ball is hit. Because he knows that will legally put him in the path of the play.
@bbmikej
@bbmikej 2 года назад
@@ThePdog3k And? Did he intentionally take this line? Of course he did. He knew what he was doing. But the main fact is that he established it as his base path immediately. To me, the path that he took while running was an intentional blocking of the ball. Running along that path would serve no other purpose during another baseball play where the ball was hit into the same area and there was not a play at home, or if the ball was hit to another area. Not only is he taking a longer path to get to first base, but whoever covers first base will be in his way when he tries to tag the bag or if a fielder has the ball and tries to tag him out, he is running closer to the fielders that are trying to tag him. The only possible benefit of taking that path is to be in the way of a throw to home plate. Therefore, the intent of taking that running path is to block the ball and that is an intentional act of blocking the ball. Even more bizarre to me is there is no base path until a tag is attempted on the runner. As long as the runner does not make a "travesty of the game," there really is no rule that says he can't run there. He could probably run even further onto the grass.
@paulalstrom4144
@paulalstrom4144 2 года назад
I've done some umpiring over the years. The whole running out of the base "path" thing is a tricky call to make. Every coach wants it called when they're on defense. I like that you mentioned that a tag has to be "attempted on the runner". Basically after having established his path, deviating(3 feet) from that path once a tag is attempted could be considered running out of the base path. Now what is a "tag attempt"? That's another ball of wax. Some judgment and good common sense by the umpire is required for the running out the base path call to be made. As for making a "travesty of the game", I've heard of Runners running straight for right field from first on a double steal. It confuses the defense just long enough for the run from third to score. And because no tag attempt has yet been made on the runner from first, the Run could score before the defense can make the out on the runner from first. Technically it's legal but it is a travesty in my opinion.

Accorcing to Umpire Bible; The first and most important thing to know about the base path is that there is no such thing as a base path (none exists) until a play is made on a runner. The base path is established when a fielder with the ball attempts to tag a runner. Then, and only then, is there a base path. most players do instinctively move out of the way of the ball once it's thrown, because, you know, it hurts when it hits you... but they have no obligation to I'd think that most umpires working Frontier league games would call this right.

@@mw3653 It's a much higher tier than school ball. My town had a frontier league team and I remember a pitcher Josh Kinney making it to the majors after pitching there. It's just below Single A.

This reminds me of some of the old rules mentioned in the Ken Burns doc, like running directly from 1st to third, or subbing yourself "in" whenever a ball flies at you in the dugout (that one'e my fav. "King" Kelly would stand up and yell "Kelly now fielding for Boston!" and catch the fly ball)

If he continued on that line he would have missed first base by two to three feet. I get that he can create his own lane but that lane has to (read “should”) lead to a base.

@@kqatsi If it was a play to first, he would be out. Makes zero sense to change it going the other way. The base path up first, is to the outside of the baseline for a reason... Sure things can happen to take you inside of that, but if you obstruct a play while outside the designated base path, it should be an out. The INTENT is even questionable. I think it is a bogus call and goes against the spirit of the rules. Ps- Jays fan so I have no skin in the game.

Yeah, hips don't move laterally to have the foot hit a 15 inch bag inside the baseline.

@@truenorth2653 Maybe all 4 bases should have a 3 ft. runners lane going the entire distance between each base. Just write a letter to the commissioner and let him know. This could be a huge improvement!

What a genius loophole. Seems pretty risky still. There has to be some umps that would call that interference.

@@frocat5163 Just like catchers are taught to if a runner doesn't cede the batter's box on an attempted steal to third. I saw quite a few hitters beaned when I played, and the same number called out.

@@Dizzifying1 Yep. Someone elsewhere pointed out hitting the runner (or batter) wouldn't actually help your team in the current situation, which is true. But it will make the beaned player think twice about getting in the way next time.
