I am in awe of all the young fans after reading the comments. I was fortunate to see Jerry close to 200 times, now 58 I realize how privileged I was and do not take one show for granted. A rare and different tune Terrapin Station!
Yup I was 16 just really getting into the dead after exploring the doors floyd all the classic rock bands just got into exploring smoking pot w my friends my best friends older brothers went to catholic school n were all Deadheads who had tape collections we'd go into his older brothers room n go thru the tapes n look Fer nuggets lol My friends brother Paul was into them too so the whole house was always a place full of this music Then got 1st car my mom was against me going to a dead concert but saw how I loved the music n had all these Colo rful the dyes I guess she knew I was really into something special that I wanted to be a part of this thing She let me go my bud got tickets to July 8 1995 soldier field We descended upon the city of Chicago in my behemoth 1988 delta 88 We saw and beheld the town overtaken w heads n gypsies and travelers I knew I was entering a pivotal life-changing moment The excitement and energy from just merely arriving there seeing the lot is still something I fail to articulate to people who aren't heads Then he was gone And nothing gonna bring him back
That transition into terrapin was so tremendously perfect. You really can’t find words for how beautiful it is. Wish I could’ve seen that live. I would’ve cried my eyes out.
It was when I clicked on the video and they were singing UJB I looked at the length of the video and saw under 14min and thought "how they gonna bring Terrapin so quick?" Lol, well, safe to say they showed me.✌
One of the most beautiful songs, ever. And a precise description of the creation process. Listened to it a zillion times, and it's never enough. Thanx for the upload
A song I adopted and fell in love with later in my Dead experience. It's amazing how certain songs enter my life exactly when i need them. Thank you guys for a lifetime of light and joy, every time your vibrations touch my life...
INSPIRaTIoN!!!! He WENT for that! Not sure I’ve ever heard Jer sing the Terrapin Station section with more conviction. His face when he sings “move me brightly” is the the face of the humble supplicant pleading the same wailing prayer we all send off when we’re in this moment in the music. He MEANT that shit... Move me brightly: more than this I will not ask, faced with mysteries dark and vast Thanks for sharing. Needed this.
I agree that was true. But tbh theres alot of versions out there where he lowkey starts to lose towards the end lol. Y'know like Bobby in LLR and Estimated, for example. Mags.
I Deadicate this song to my Mother; ANITRA MONTAGUE MARTIN who taught me about many things and to love good music. She pass to the other side of the veil 8 years ago today. I KNOW that i will see here again very soon. I also KNOW that the Grateful Dead are a tool in the hands of the GREAT GOD ALMIGHTY to spread LOVE and JOY to ALL HER children!! Thanks for posting!!! I love you all!! Keep on Rockin in the FREE world.
Jerry may have died the year after I was born. Listening to this makes me cry with so many emotions. Anger because I never will be blessed enough to enjoy a live show with Jerry. Sadness at the what still feels like fresh wound that’s been in my heart for my whole life at the loss of this beautiful being from this world. And finally, the most exquisite, pure and completely engulfing joy I’ve ever felt because even tho the Jerry’s body is gone from this world, his spirit will live on forever in his incredible legacy. ❤️⚡️💙😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
At least you're aware of what you missed. I only saw the Dead with Jerry twice, but more than thankful for those two. I've taken my 11 year old daughter to 6 Dead & Co. shows now. She loves the people and dancing to the music. Someday, she'll be proud to have seen what she could while they were still around.
I'll throw a little cold water on this. Jerry was just genius but his indiscipline ripped off a lot of fans. We travelled for more than one cancelled Winterland show because, "Jerry has the flu." It happened a few too many times. His lifeless Elmer Fudd singing and playing just killed shows (even as you could hear the underlying brilliance that wouldn't find its expression that night). Terrible or sparkling, as Jerry went, so went the show. The Stones were repeatedly booed, even off the stage in Canada, and they wised-up and cleaned-up. Drug-use deterioration is an occupational hazard for rock stars---idolized, too much money, too much free time, surrounded by enablers---Jerry never got the memo. You could see what a mess he was. Sorry, the rip-off includes all you who got on the bus late. JM is great and most of us dig D&C but we coulda still had the original Grateful Dead, Phil included, touring another dozen years.
Doc Will...I hear ya!maybe a bit harsh for some snowflakes but not untrue. I saw my first show in summer of1988 @ SPAC(last show played there after 20 yr run) I was 16...many many shows followed that, Knick arenaAlbanyNY,Foxboro,Rich Stadium,Nassau,Meadowlands, around 40 shows with Jerry (and Brent, thank you very much) after awhile shows started to become an absolute disaster...the parking lot was just a bad scene, 20 yo H addicts begging for change....just depressing!!!. While Jerry morphed into an icon I was fully invested until I went to my first Phish show...70 shows later I still see them live at every chance I get...ps,.. seen Dead @ Co. twice and both were better than any GD show I ever saw with Jerry...except my first of course..
Yes another one of my favs lady with a fan such a classic love tale and leaves me waiting for the end. Cuz since the end is never told we pay the teller off in gold in hopes he will come back but he cant be bought or sold???? 😘🖤😍luv u 4ever jerry my man. The best ever
I was there the for each of the following NYE runs until they stopped doing them at that venue. These shows were the SuperBowl of Dead shows. I always tried to get my East Coast heads out there. Just a different, more vivid scene. Nature Bless the Grateful Dead and it's many Heads.
We all do. I know people rip 92-95 (especially 95'), but man, SO many passionate renditions of Stella Blue, So Many Roads, Brokedown, Wharf Rat, Terrapin, Morning Dew, Days Between, Standing on the Moon, etc, during those last few years. That grandfatherly voice, as you say. It cracks and is filled with raw emotion. Never fails to elicit emotion from me and sometimes brings tears to my eyes.
I had to work this New Years Eve Listened to this concert on my $ 10 radio in the basement of work. Crappy reception but you gotta do what you gotta do to get by.
My first New Years shows.....Just turned 20.....I went by myself(from Pennsylvania) and had 10 strangers in my room by the end of the first night.......Love is love not fade away
Ratdog 67 I'll be 49 2/1. CA, NY traveler. TX, FL. I've seen over 35 shows. Jerry was a good soul. Not fame. He IS music. Hated fame. His downfall. All for us. He felt obligated. Again jamming like that was ALWAYS the biggest party on the planet. Enjoy your shows. Halloween MSG 2016. Mayer is eeriily
This was a pay-per-view concert that was available 12/31/87 that is why there are effects over it. I have the whole thing on VHS somewhere from way back when. It was overall a pretty amazing show....
Little known fact Jerry's missing finger had 3 top ten hits in heaven before Jerry even got there thus proving Jerry had more talent in one finger than most whole musicians. lol
i was around for all of this back in the day and really enjoyed it but i never really appreciated the music and now in my 50's ive really found what ive lost. too stoned to care then. now much wiser! but i do miss those stoner days!
Between 5:57 and 8:18! AHHHHH Jerry!! THAT'S what makes The Dead worthwhile! Everyone else seemed to NOT overplay it, and that also is what makes The Dead The Dead!! Absolutely fantastic!!?
i totally understand where your coming from i mean hell alot of times me or friends were on verge of seizures due to lighting and effects but i think alot of them were essential to the whole in the moment memories you were able to aquire especially at specific shows with certain friends and family around or that perfect note when the video effects actually matched up
@@eminem13001 I see that all over the place. But seen the Dead, the Other Ones, Further, and Dead and Co. The reality does not match the expectations. Sadly it's like watered beer. Taste close but something is missing, mostly that feeling of shared space, like you're under a glass dome a fishbowl with everyone else being watched by who knows what, and realizing it approves.
Let my inspiration flow In token rhyme, suggesting rhythm That will not forsake you Till my tale is told and done While the firelight's aglow Strange shadows from the flames will grow Till things we've never seen Will seem familiar Shadows of a sailor, forming winds Both foul and fair all swarm Down in Carlisle, he loved A lady many years ago Here beside him stands a man A soldier from the looks of him Who came through many fights But lost at love While the story teller speaks A door within the fire creaks Suddenly flies open And a girl is standing there Eyes alight with glowing hair All that fancy paints as fair She takes her fan and throws it In the lion's den Which of you to gain me tell Will risk uncertain pains of hell? I will not forgive you If you will not take the chance The sailor gave at least a try The soldier being much too wise Strategy was his strength Not disaster The sailor, coming out again The lady fairly leapt at him That's how it stands today You decide if he was wise The story teller makes no choice Soon you will not hear his voice His job is to shed light Not to master Since the end is never told We pay the teller off in gold In hopes he will come back But he cannot be bought or sold Inspiration, move me brightly Light the song with sense and color Hold away despair More than this I will not ask Faced with mysteries dark and vast Statements just seem vain at last Some rise, some fall Some climb to get to Terrapin Counting stars by candlelight All are dim but one is bright The spiral light of Venus Rising first and shining best On, from the northwest corner Of a brand new crescent moon Crickets and cicadas sing A rare and different tune Terrapin station In the shadow of the moon Terrapin station And I know we'll be there soon Terrapin I can't figure out Terrapin If it's the end or beginning Terrapin But the train's put it's brakes on Terrapin And the whistle is screaming Terrapin
Outstanding Terrapin, thanks for posting. Always can do without the trippy graphics, don't know who was in charge of that stuff, added a little at the shows, but now its lame.
