Not just that, they used to dominate in consumer electronics and general appliances too. Cheap Italian (and then other recovering European countries) products dominate the market in 1960s, then Japanese till 1990s, then came the Korean, immediately followed by Chinese products in early 2000s. Now the absolute dominance of Chinese products seems declining due to rising tension and geopolitics.

Japan has always been “cool” and “mysterious” to the eyes of outsiders, Since it was this far away country at the edge of the world that also cut itself off from the outside world. This phenomenon existed as far back as the edo period 1603-1867. Many westerners have been fascinated by the country, including artist like Van Gogh who were inspired by Japanese culture. In the 19th century Tsar Nicholas of the Russian empire also made a trip to the country and got a dragon tattoo there.

Japan and Thailand (Formerly Siam) were the only countries in Asia that resisted Western Colonialism. Thailand did it by playing the larger Western Powers against each other. Japan did it by force. It's no coincidence that Japan has the most Cultural influence second only to the United States. Also, Japan also has the fourth largest Navy in the world by number of hulls and displacement. Until the Vikram is built and launched, India needs Japan.

I have been interested in Japanese stuff since 9 years old. It was first the samurai sword that I always see in movie. So sharp and the skillful swordsmanship and it look cool. Then, their foods such as sushi, ramen, sashimi and etc. I also like their traditional clothing. It was until the age of 13 or 14 that I learnt about the existence of anime and manga. And that's when I started to abandon cartoon and went for anime instead. Reason? Better art quality, better storyline. Anime or Japanese art style is truly unique. I have never seen an art so alive, the expression in their art is more detailed and easier to understand. And beside that, the drawing of the characters are more interesting than cartoon characters. Take my first anime Sword Art Online for example: Kirito's outfit and his swords. The actions are even more eye catching. Those incredibly animated actions and effects are two of the few main reasons that anime liked by many people especially teenagers and young adults. Japan created the birth of new job on Internet: Virtual RU-vidr and I love that too. Kizuna Ai has been one of the pioneers (the most important role) in Vtuber world for long enough her efforts deserve her the title of Queen of Vtubers. Right now the most famous vtuber company is called Hololive. And Hololive most important pioneer is Tokino Sora, she is an amazing person and played the most important role together with her company in developing what Hololive is today. I really love Japan and their culture. I hope it keep lives on so that the new generation born to this world can enjoy it too.

Also, same way anime have English subtitles, K-dramas have English subtitles for international fans as well. Just because you don't watch K-Dramas, it doesn't mean it isn't popular internationally. As a personal anecdote, I bought Kimchi to try for the first time a decade ago after seeing actors/actresses eat Kimchi in dramas I was watching then. Korean food shown in dramas was how I fell in love with their culture. My point is, yes it is popular and through South Korea's export of its media, you see rise in interests of Foreign expats the same way you see foreign expats living in Japan. They don't think it's necessary to reach foreign market while their own domestic market is enormous. Not to mention that the Japanese are very strict when it comes to copyright. It can do if it concentrates on past things even. India gave Japan deities, central asia the shamanism , and south east asia hindu culture. Birthplace of martial arts ( Kalaripayattu) , which Bodhidharma brought to East Asia. Chess, Shampoo , Number systems there are many things. We just need to reorganise and spread again.

The language, the people and the culture changed so much after 1980's. Dragon ball Z, pokemon, one piece, code geass , Full metal alchemist, AOT, HunterxHunter and more . I want these things to hit the Indian TV'S not just the OTT's. I have watched a lot of Indian mythological shows like Karna, Mahabharat, Bajirao , Rana Pratap etc. I love the long storyline, the most crazy thing is we still wait for one piece chapters and animated version of the chapters, just imagine how much of audience will get attracted towards it , we learn the same thing from these animes as we learn from our mythological shows but in a different way. Both are respected by the people. Thanks for covering this adventurous topic.

@@missplainjane3905 No problem. I can answer them 1.) Yes. Very advanced, and civilized, especially since they have been sort of isolated from the rest of the world for a while, and I think by choice, in the past. 2.) I would rate 8. There are a lot of ppl living there, and a lot going on. The city of Tokyo is very active and busy, but they have incorporated nature so flawlessly into their city. It can be chaotic, or peaceful depending on where you go. There are shrines everywhere that are very relaxing to be at. The landscape is great; so beautiful! They do their best to present the best in whatever they do, make, say. 3.) They are very nice, and accepting of foreigners. They are curious, but also polite. They may be more passive than other countries people, but I can appreciate being given the space to work things out on my own, and call for help if/ when needed. 4.) Spiritual, ( I passed through many shrines), culturally abundant, technological wizards, simple, (uncomplicated) welcoming.

Pop culture is more incorporated there than here. I even remember when the virus first shook the world, at the end of One Piece, the characters (chibi) would say things like, hey, don’t forget that cleanliness is important, so don’t forget to wash your hands, and give others space. (Paraphrase) You’ll love it there. I highly recommend visiting. I am going back there for sure. 😻 Also, akihabara, and harajuku are hot spots for pop culture.

Japanese Game Devs are showing the world how to make masterpieces with titles like Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Final Fantasy series and of course, NieR Automata. Perhaps, I became interested in science and now a scientist, because I played Chrono Trigger, a Japanese game, which had a complex Time-travel story (think Inception, but even more convoluted) when I was 12 years old. Ever since, I've fallen in love with Japanese neo-classical music, learned to play the Piano just to learn pieces from masters like Yoko Shimomura, Nubuo Uematsu and Keiichi Okabe. I've never been to Japan, but I took some of their art to my heart.

What did the US do to stun the Japanese economy? Japanese economy was practically died after the plaza accord, japan was solely dependent on export to the USA. During the Plaza Hotel Agreement in 1985. Japan and USA agreed to readjust currencies. The USD halved in value. So the currencies of Japan, France, West Germany and UK doubled in value. This may have inadvertently led to the Asset Bubble in Japan in 1989.

Contrary to the popular belief that Japan is ultimately missing out I don't think so, Koreans just outsold them by making craft conventional to their culture and making it more appealing to the outside market mainly the US. Where I think Japan ultimately won is, retaining their culture and keeping it true their original form and not bending knee to anyone unlike the former! For example: We all know about Japanese streets and schools and even the in and outs of it! Just wanted to say I don't dislike what Korea has done (not that it matters, they are still getting the bag and a shit load of it, so they are doing something right), just that as years progress, all the k's (dramas, movies, songs, etc) have been americanized one way or the other (maybe it their way of updating) And that I am not a big fan that. Atlast, in conclusion We all saw a Japan there was but are we seeing a Korea created for us to see?
