This is the full length trip report with natural sounds and on-trail commentary from a 3-day backpacking adventure that my cousin Marina and I took to the Grayson Highlands in July 2020. We covered ~21 miles in the Mt Rogers High Country of Virginia’s Jefferson National Forest. Notable sights included Stone Mountain, Appalachian Trail, Scales, Ponies, Mt Rogers, More Ponies, Wilburn Ridge and more.
This was Marina’s first backpacking trip and she did a great job! The Grayson Highlands are an awesome area for beginner backpackers due to the manageable-yet-exciting terrain, numerous bailout options and incredible Appalachian views. Plus there are ponies!

Great hike! You got lucky having three days of good weather,since up there it can change on a dime. Thanks for sharing.

You’re totally right Jim - very lucky! Not even 20 minutes after we got off trail that thunderstorm that is brewing at the end of the video started dumping. Fortunately we were down the road eating a burger at that point!

You seem to take a lot of newer backpackers out which is very admirable. I sometimes try to avoid it, because if they have a bad trip and don't enjoy backpacking, I feel responsible. Another great trip vid!

I love getting new people into backpacking! You're right - there is definitely a chance that things can go wrong but proper planning and keeping a positive attitude can get you 80% of the way there with a newbie. I understand your reluctance due to feeling responsible if they don't enjoy backpacking but think of the flip side - they may like it or even love it and you get to feel responsible for that as well!

@@LayneComfort I'm 2 for 2 so far with getting new people into backpacking. But one trip was so close to disastrous that I'm shocked he agreed for a second (much better) trip. I figure I need to work on my trail leadership a bit more in future. Do you just take out friends or do you also take people you don't know who want to get into backpacking?
@LayneComfort

2 for 2 is a great record! That is something that will grow along with experience. In terms of new backpackers it has only been friends, but some of my best hiking buddies are guys that I didn't previously know and met out on trail.

@@LayneComfort Nice thing about meeting people on trail is you know you already share atleast one interest lol.

What a great trip! I hope you got a good still shot of the sunset at 15:17. That would make a great canvas print! Incredible!

Thanks David, that was indeed a stunning sunset. Funnily enough I often forget to take still photos on trips but my cousin took the thumbnail photo for this video at the beginning of that sunset

Another awesome video man! Seemed like Marina really enjoyed herself. I loved the 'Cut grams not switchbacks', it's amazing to me some of the directions the creators of the AT take you. I once hiked up a huge (straight the eff up) mountain in Virginia, just to hike back down it almost to the exact same spot I started. Got to love it!! Also, your weather was amazing man.. great trip!

The AT has a mind of its own haha. Yes sir was a blessing to receive such great weather for Marina’s first trip!
