GREAT WESTERN INTERLUDE

On July 25th I noticed that Large Prairie 4144 was booked to pass Pannier 7714 at Hampton Loade on the Severn Valley Railway. So, before I went to Eardington Station to do some work I called at Hampton and shot this video which, as I hoped, illustrates a typical rural station during one of its busier moments. This day was destined to break July temperature records which might explain why 7714's fireman's shirt gave the impression of a visit to the beach before or after his shift!

Brilliant! Two passing locos facing forwards - great planning! And 7714 accelerates smartly with absolutely no fuss. Great video, thanks Alan.

Delightful captures in every way, thank you Alan. As well as the rural station activity, your have very ably conveyed the atmosphere. I see what you mean about the shirt (bit of a hike to the beach from the SVR?), but at the same time very much hope that it had the desired effect of relief in what must have been exceptionally harsh footplate temperatures. This video also illustrates the phenomenon whereby a small station can change from zero to high activity and vice versa in just a few seconds. Kind regards, Bob.

Thank you Bob. I have never forgotten an audio recording by Peter Hanford of a country station where the cooing pigeons were disturbed by the arrival of a train only for the serenity to return on its departure. I was lucky yesterday in as much that there were only two passengers who were out of shot which gave the impression of desertion. Everything worked well yesterday which just goes to show if one goes often enough things will fall into place. Kind regards Alan

A lovely little cameo there Alan. Don't envy the firemen though, we had an handful of the Fowler 2400 class tanks and I hated them in this weather. Hope you didn't work too hard at Eardington in the heat!! Regards, Brian.

Thank you Brian. Yes, a tank engine footplate is a good place to lose weight! I took it quite leisurely and called it a day at 3-00pm. Regards Alan

Thank you, that's most interesting. Most, if not all, of our heritage railways prefer to use the traditional method.

Very nice Alan. The exchange of tokens adds interest to the procedings. Presumably the token taken from the Pannier was subsequently passed to the Prairie? Noel

Thank you Noel. That's correct. No shortage of exercise for the bobby...once every hour and a half or so! Alan

The exchange of the tokens is in Gemany very unusual. I know only one museum tailway that uses this system (Hespertaleisenbahn, Essen, north rhine westfalia)

Do the others use radio?

Yes , for example "Deutscher Esenbahnverein DEV". They call it Zugleitbetrieb. There is a central station and one man similar to the man in a signalbox allows the train to drive. One man on the train gives him a feedback, for example the train arrived a certain station. The term train means a loco as well as a loco with cars. But often there ist only one engine with a liitle train that belongs to the museum railway. So it isn't neccessary to use a token. Some well known museum railways ( Railway Museum Nördlingen or Einsenbagnmuseum Bochum) use tracks and signaling by the DB. That's the easiest and best way
