I was raised on chow chow, recipes from my grandmother and her ancestors all from the Southern United States. Our chow chow was chopped a bit finer with the addition of cabbage and bell peppers. In my immediate family we would serve it with our Pinto Beans with a side of corn bread.

Hi Bonita & friends. I'm from South Eastern Manitoba & until last fall, I had never had the pleasure of tasting Green tomato Chow Chow. Jeez! I'm in my 50's !!! Where has this been all my life? My neighbour gave me a sample jar. This year I intentionally planted a few extra tomatoes to make a nice stash in my pantry. I like to make only small batches, due to a bad back ; so this amount in the video is perfect. Several batches over the next couple of weeks will be made. The first batch is almost finished simmering & is perfuming my kitchen. My tummy is growling in anticipation! Thank you for posting this video blog !

Hi Bonita. I had some green tomatoes from my plants and decided to make some chow chow, which brought me here. I realized that the water from the juices would be too salty, so out it goes. Thanks so much for this! Chow Chow was one of my favourite things I discovered while living in Nova Scotia ten years ago. I had a question - why do you not use some of the water/juice removed from the tomatoes and onions instead of replacing it with plain water? I would think that would improve the flavour and nutritional value? Or is it too acidic that way?
@bonitaskitchen
@bonitaskitchen 4 года назад
Hi Patti: Thank you so much for your message and for noticing this. The reason you remove the water that come out of the veggies is because of the salt, now this is a part of the pickling process. You salt it first and remove some of the acidic juices and start the pickling, then remove that and the next step is the vinegar, pickling spices and sugar. This is a lovely recipe for green tomato chow chow and please let me know what you think after you make it. Enjoy and have a lovely evening. Bonita

@@bonitaskitchen Didn't rinse them , turned out great . Will tell you tho , not used to chow not being green. My nannies recipe from N.S. doesn't have turmeric or mustard in it. I got 24 500ml bottles 2- 2lt bottles 1-750ml bottle and 1- 500ml bottle and a half bottle in the fridge ,and that was 4 batches. I did put some diced red pepper in mine for color . After I canned the 24 jars ,what was left I decided to thicken it a bit with corn starch lol I think the color change was confusing my mind and kept thinkin mustard pickles lol. Gave some to me brother and my ex wife , so far everyone is loving it . printed the recipe and pit it in my book. once my Family finds out I'm back into canning this won't last long. Making pickled tomatoes for my brothers in-laws . never made them before but they sound good. I went thru your playlist and saved a lot of your canning videos to watch later. Will be making more , cheers

Hi Dianne, Thank you so much for your message and for making our recipe. Sorry I'm just getting to your message. I would put it all back in the boiler and add more sugar, then start the boil it again and rewash the bottles and start all over again with filling them. I'm sure you got them all sealed and everything cleaned up. It's always best to taste the pickles in between cooking them to always make sure you are happy with the taste. But lucky for you it can be fixed but it will be extra work. I hope this helps and enjoy them to the fullest. :) Bonita

@bonitaskitchen 2 года назад
Sorry I just seen your message and if anytime you put to much salt over the green tomatoes rinse them off with tap water and just add what you need. But if you already got them soaked over night but not started to cook still rinse some salt off before cooking them. Sorry but if you need faster response try emailing me at bonitakitchen@gmail.com thanks Bonita

What can you do if your chow chow is too bitter?
@bonitaskitchen
@bonitaskitchen Год назад
Hi Pat, Thank you for your message and for stopping by. If you are still cooking it you can add more sugar or add one cup of hot water. The recipe don't call for water but it will take some of the vinegar sharpness down. I hope this helps and thank you for making our recipe, :) Bonita
