well, that was the point in the lore. Jabba wanted her to feel terrible, because he's a terrible individual. Of course, I totally believe that the person playing the character needs to be 100% on board, and if they hate the scene, it shouldn't be shot like that. Even if it causes a lot of problems, people shouldn't be made to do things they aren't comfortable with. That's why you should have the script written BEFORE you start shooting.

Greg: The original star wars was ✨dark and gritty✨ and these new ones aren't, and are worse because of it Also Greg: The character Yondu wasn't a clear cut good or bad character, and now I'm going to bitch about it for 15 minutes (Side note: I wonder what he thinks "dark and gritty" actually is)
@yilesse
@yilesse 11 месяцев назад
Ewoks, apparently. 😆 I do love how he's complaining about the most dark and gritty thing in the prequels while simultaneously saying they aren't dark and gritty enough. They gave you child murder, Greg. And it wasn't treated as a joke. You should be thrilled about that. I like how he doesn't understand that the slave girl being murdered while the band play an admittedly ridiculous song isn't somehow undermining that scene because it reinforces how violent death is obviously a very regular thing and everyone there just treats it as part of the entertainment. There was a band there in the original version, they just didn't have the CGI abominations like the singer. He's a mob boss in a seedy night club, that's the vibe George Lucas wanted. You'd think Greg would approve of the grittiness of that.

I think he's more talking about the film making in the 70's and early 80's. AKA the quality of the film and lighting. I think Greg honestly just confused the sets with the movies. The sets were all a good deal darker and more dirty than what we see in modern films, especially Star Wars films which tend to have a very clean aesthetic after the prequels, but the movies themselves were pretty much children's movies. @joshholland90
@joshholland90 3 месяца назад
Break the universe* not the franchise. AFAIK there isn’t a lot in the prequels that directly contradicts hard rules or lore that has been previously established. In the sequel trilogy we get things like tracking thru hyperspace, ability to teleport items and ones self across long distances with the force, force healing and the famous Holdi maneuver which makes the entire battle against the death star pointless if you could simply point a large ship in its direction and jump to hyperspace in order to obliterate it. These things fly in the face of well established rules from the 7 previous movies.

TL:DR when I show my kids starwars "The Last Jedi" will be treated as a standalone film and I think they will like it more then I did at first I have over the years come around on "The Last Jedi" and concluded that my issues with the movie all stem from Ryan Johnson not being given the reigns from the start. So much of what it is doing would be enhanced by it being a piece of a well planned trilogy rather than having to shape the bare bones nature of "The Force Awakens" into a genuinely new idea. And to top it off, disney was too chicken shit to actually pay off the ideas being presented and instead make a trilogy in which all three movies feel like they are actively contracting each other both thematically and narratively.

"We didn't know why he (Vader) was redeemed" How about because he was the right hand to a fascist authoritarian society that murders indiscriminately, tortures, and colonizes other worlds to extract value from the planets to fuel the empire's war machine (Endor) as the Emperor seeks to conquer the galaxy and Vader was his right hand man in all of that. We knew that. That was all established though the first two movies, and his redeeming act was to kill the Emperor himself by chucking his ass in a pit, saving Luke and redeeming his own "soul".
@flamemasterelan
@flamemasterelan 7 месяцев назад
You are correct, but at the same time, Vader was just guilty of some vague evil actions. We never really saw him do much other than command in the original trilogy, so him being redeemed at the end was fine. Even with the Death Star, he presided over it being built, but it was largely the Emperor and Tarkin who made the orders. But the prequels forced people to actually see the wrongs Anakin committed, and that changes one's perspective.

Unless they shoot someone dead based on vibes. That's just makes them cool and has no impact on their morals. If you do redeem them, it means you're saying what they did was fine. Even though if that was what you were saying, they wouldn't need redeeming in the first place. I am very smart. I'm 99% convinced he's going in hard on "Yondu is a child trafficker" and his "they're trying to change your morals through media and yes I do mean (((they)))" to try and get Shoe to notice him. The whole Jabba palace song thing was something that Lucas himself stated he wanted in the original film, but because of technological limitations in that area he couldn't pull off the song number, once Lucas films developed the special digital effects Lucas wanted to remake the trilogy to fit his original vision. Sometimes directors make decisions about removing things that they really didn't want to, but because of limitations in effects, or because of time constraints, these get left on the cutting room floor, and sometimes a directors original vison isn't as good as the final product they have to release.

I've always had strong Star Wars opinions tho, I'm open to the idea I'm wrong

It's so funny for Greg to pretend like the scene with Oola (the green Twi'lek dancer) was somehow replaced in the 1997 special edition when, not only was it there, but extra shots were filmed and added of her being in the rancor pit. You don't even have to be a dedicated Star Wars fan to know this, all these changes are well documented and easy to find just by googling them. Greg's just being dishonest and/or lazy (I'm gonna guess both).

Does Gerg know that not everything needs to be dark and gritty? And that you can convey emotional significance without everything being GRIMDARK? This is exhausting to listen to, and I commend Jake for getting through this on regular speed. I’ve got this on 1.5 and I’m still just over Gerg and his lukewarm takes. He sounds like he took one media studies class in a D-tier community college and now thinks he’s the holder of all knowledge.

I agree with him on the special editions. You can't legally get Star Wars 77-83 on modern formats and Lucas should leave them the fuck alone or at least include the originals with the new versions. He won't even give Library of Congress a historical 35mm copy. Otherwise Greg goes off the rails.

Something I've always wondered; if TLJ is just about "killing the past" why would the director choose to have Leia live? Luke dies. Snoke dies. But why Leia, the catalyst for the first movie, live?
@lnk2158
@lnk2158 11 месяцев назад
The original plan was to have the three main leads die at the end of each film. Han then Luke then Leia. Leia originally had a ton of scenes planned for the third film before her character was going to die. But because Fisher died during the shoot, they had to change the story and when she died in that film. The plan was for her to survive TLJ.
@flamemasterelan
@flamemasterelan 7 месяцев назад
@@lnk2158 She did survive The Last Jedi. Carrie Fisher died before the premiere of the film, but her character didn't die until Rise of Skywalker, in which most of her scenes were done with archived footage from The Force Awakens.

Oh man, some of these movies you're saying were good... The Last Jedi broke the universe because they used hyperspace travel as a weapon. If that's a possibility with the effects shown, the tension around things like the Death Star don't make sense. It broke the logic of the balance of power. Every hyperspace capable ship is now and has always been a potential wmd. That breaks the universe. A mutiny that could have been entirely avoided is sparked because the woman in command finds it unnecessary to explain her reasoning at all even slightly. And a major character goes on a completely meaningless side quest for basically the entire movie to show off CGI and has basically no impact on the story. And I can't get behind Guardians 2. Ego, like Thanos, is an evil genius with an incredibly stupid plan/goal that falls apart if you think about it for more than 2 seconds. Sorry, Greg is upset for all the wrong reasons, but I still don't think they're good movies.
@XanKreigor
@XanKreigor 11 месяцев назад
Yeah Guardian wasn't very good in terms of writing. It was a visual spectacle with good action scenes and that's it. And the New Star Wars trilogy was crap. The writing was atrocious.

I agree here. I don't believe that Rian ever had a chance at Ep 9, let alone was fired because of the backlash. It was highly rated by critics and made over a billion dollars. Rian even said something along the lines of not having any plans for Ep 9 while making Ep 8, because it was someone else's story to tell. I also said after Ep 8, that while not a bad movie in itself, is a bad movie when viewed as part of both a trilogy and saga, and that Ep 9 would bomb because of the story directions taken with Ep 8. Ep 7 was clearly setting up Rey "Skywalker", Kylo redemption, and Snoke big bad, and so when Ep 8 undercut them all, it left Ep 9 in an awkward place, to either try to fix those cuts to revert back to Ep 7 lines (like it did) or follow through with Ep 8 and have no exciting story beats besides watching Rey beat down Kylo. Either way, it was going to disappoint one group or the other. Amazingly, it upset everybody, and I personally didn't see that coming. The Disney trilogy had the chance to be anything it wanted to be. It could have expanded the universe or subverted the tropes with its own settings. It didn't have to have Rey live on a desert planet and find Anakin's saber, take or Chewie or Falcon, or to turn another Skywalker in to a darkside user dressed in black. It chose to be a direct sequel trilogy to the original trilogy, and trying to subert yourself mid way through your story is whiplash inducing.

I love that people like this guy pretend that summer blockbusters and/or superhero movies are the only things that exist in the cinema industry anymore. How much do you want to bet Greggy has never actually seen awesome works of art of the last decade, such as Whiplash, Ex Machina, Annihilation, JoJo Rabbit, Rush, Shiva Baby, Bottoms, The Handmaiden, Parasite, The King's Speech, Black Swan, Philomena, Dallas Buyers' Club, The Book Thief, Birdman, Prisoners, etc. If you ask such a person what they thought of the movie Nightcrawler, they're going to think that they somehow missed a solo movie about the blue guy that teleports from the X-Men...
