My grandparents worked seasonally in a tomato canning factory back in the 60s. When my dad was little he would go to work with them during the summers. He remembers the blank cans coming down the belt and they would get Hunts labels stuck on. When that roll of labels ran out the belt would stop and a guy would come put a new roll of labels on, this time Del Monte, next time store brand. Same tomatoes, same cans, different label. Every time dad taught a financial class (adjunct professor at the community college) he would tell that story to his students. When you were talking about the cheese being the same, just different packages, it reminded me of my dad :)

Ugh that’s so crazy! And kinda makes me mad that they do that. Although I have to say there are certain items that I have found the generic brand to not taste as good. So I don’t know why that is. Like the canned tomatoes usually the store brand doesn’t taste as good to me.

I have noticed as well that generic can be a little different. Also remember you can jazz up the generic to taste better. If I am using canned tomatoes in a soup or chili I will get generic and add spices

My Nan has a saying: stock is as good as money. Buying cans and frozen, things that will last, when they're reduced or on sale, and having a stocked pantry and freezer, will serve you when your funds are lower. Stockpile when you can and it'll serve you when you can't. Having the stock is as good as having the money.

I live by that same advice! My spouse works in a hot factory and drinks a large bottle of Gatorade every day. So when I catch it on sale at Kroger (local grocery) for .59 cents I love to stock up for him (just bought 48 bottles last week!) since he typically spends $1 or more per bottle daily. We do the same for juicey juice with our kids, they drink so little of it that when Kroger has them for $1 a bottle (normally $2.80) I like to buy five or more bottles. They seem to have the best deals on “manager special” reduced meat as well. It’s the cheapest way for me to create a stock pile of meat in our freezer and we buy our ground beef and chicken in bulk from a local deli for super cheap and then I bag it myself in sizing I can take out and thaw for dinner. There have been times where we were broke, and got through hard times by using up our stock pile.

I worked with someone who carried a container of Gatorade powder in his lunchbox because he said it was less expensive to mix his own than buy bottles. He had a travel cup he used specifically for his Gatorade.

A friend of mine has learned the exact time of day when the supermarket reduces prices on a Friday evening and does her big shop then. She will make do with whatever she finds for her family. I cannot believe the deals she gets.

I find this to be false for me, it doesn't matter how hungry I feel, if it's my money I'm spending and not someone else's I'll always be far more conservative regardless of how hungry I may be, for me the bottom dollar always rules not my hunger. If it's someone else's money then I'm spending a shit ton regardless if I'm really hungry or stuffed.

I find that if I go shopping when I'm full, I don't feel like shopping at all and tend to stare into space and forget what I'm supposed to be doing. I shop best when I'm hungry and have a list for my meal plans.

I have done all these things for years. Also, sometimes the name brand item is cheaper than the store brand. I always buy the cheapest. My store does a ten for ten with the 11th free. That's when I stock up. I shop the sale and base my list on that. I also use my loyalty card and coupons. But the best thing I have ever done is to open my calculator app and add as I go. It keeps me from spending to much on items I don't need. I'm happy to say, my family is debt free and we just paid off our mortgage. Living frugally has its benefits. 😁

Did you know if your family drinks/uses lowfat milk you can used nonfat dry milk powder and double your milk? Just mix half fresh milk, and half reconstituted milk. Immediate 50% savings. Nonfat dry milk is also great for cooking, especially in pudding.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you will use a gallon of milk or something well before the expiration date, to go ahead and buy the one that expires sooner. If everyone goes in and buys the furthest item back, many items will go bad and have to be thrown out, causing prices to go up and also being wasteful. Just something to keep in mind.

@JaneDay
@JaneDay 4 года назад
A very wise comment. I had never looked at it that way. If your milk will be used in 2 to 3 days and has 5 days on the best before date, buy that! In the UK it is getting ridiculous because all of us shop from the bac of the shelves! This explains why so much ends up as yellow sticker buys. I am not a yellow sticker fan, but stores must be losing a fortune and this in turn puts jobs at risk. More and more we have self service tills and scan as you go shopping. This necessitates far fewer staff and we are already short on jobs here. Cheers x

In Australia the generic rule doesn’t always apply to cans and jars. A lot of the time the brand-named jars and cans are more expensive because they’re produced by Australian growers and factories whilst the cheaper ones come from China where the farming laws are a lot looser and the factories don’t offer their workers fair conditions. Another consideration is that the supermarket owned brands like Select don’t have to buy shelf space, so they’re cheaper, but this edges out independently owned brands that give people jobs and offer farmers more options. All I’m saying is that sometimes paying 70c extra on crushed tomatoes is better than making a donation to a local charity.

She is so right with the name brand foods!!! Your paying for the advertising, commercials etc for the items! Sometimes with name brands you will notice they will secretly decrease their ounces of their products and raise the prices! It’s crazy what these company’s will do!

My favorite tip, does necessarily save you money from the get go, but my family rarely drinks milk, but we do need it and use it. We actually buy organic milk, not because we care about it being organic, but because the expiration date is sometimes more the a month longer then non organic milk. As a family that takes a while to go through a gallon, this has really helped us from being wasteful, saving us money in the long run.

Watch the price per ounce labels because they’re not always correct. I’ve caught Walmart’s labels showing soda cans per ounce for the 24 packs vs price per can on the 12 packs. It makes it look cheaper to buy the 24 pack when it’s really not. It never hurts to pull out your phone’s calculator from time to time and check the math.

I’ve found that the best way to keep household supply costs down is to use as few consumable items as possible and invest in long lasting durable alternatives. I.e. glass storage containers and cloth sandwich bags, cloth napkins/towels/hankerchiefs, bowls with lids instead of plastic wrap, sharpen and reuse razor cartridges as long as possible, wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets, cloth diapers when our kids were small, rechargeable batteries, etc. We also do DIY stuff like cleaning with baking soda and vinegar. Our household supply budget is pretty minimal because there’s not that many items that have to be purchased on a recurring basis.

I have been binge watching your videos while nursing my youngest son and I just have to say YES! Listening to you feels like talking to a friend who gets it 😅 I was raised by my grandmother who was on a small fixed income and she taught me early to live frugally. Now I have a family of 5, I am a stay at home mom, my husband is self employed (so we can have great months AND horrible months), but we have very small debt. It’s such a good feeling to know that by giving it just a little more thought and effort I am giving my family opportunities to do things we definitely couldn’t do otherwise. 💕

Love, Love Love this video!!! My 2 tips: co-op lunches and splitting groceries with other families/friends. So for the co-op lunches, I worked out providing salad and chobani yogurt for myself and co-worker (bought everything at Costco) and my co-worker would supply the protein and dinner. His wife would often make a double batch which worked out as lunch for him and me and sometimes dinner if they had a lot leftover. Also, at the time, my cousin & I were both single so we’d go to Costco together and buy perishable and non-perishable items together and split the cost. Even though we were buying in bulk, we were able to save on cost.

Love the tips. Grocery shopping is my least favorite task but it's just two of us so thankfully, I can get it done pretty quickly. I would just like to add, it's a good habit to bring reusable shopping bags. Not only are they stronger and much easier to handle. They don't end up in our landfills, rivers, oceans and ultimately our drinking water and seafood like the plastic ones do. And, many grocers give a per bag discount when you bring your own. We should reduce and recycle single use plastic as often as we can. So happy that I came across your channel. Thanks!

There’s always a difference between being taught, BY A MOM, how to make and save money and being taught BY A DAD. The guys do a really good job teaching these things but the women pay attention to the little details that mean SO MUCH MORE!! Lol..... So glad to see that someone else notices the hidden positions of items with later expiration dates, the double cost of items with the split weight, the need to handpick vs get the sweet potatoes or fruits already bagged or chopped respectively. The tip on eggs, the tip on same product with different labels, and so much more???? What an eye opener - and Whitney Sews even authenticates that (somewhere on the comment section here) with her own father's real life experience of same packaging trick!!!!!! Oh mehnn!! Girl u rock!! I buy organic but I use a local farmers market and I also trade from my garden to supplement with vendors. Our thought on the this is, we are saving on medical expenses and investing in our health. We spend less than anyone we know and they eat fast food and processed food and they also never feel well. Growing in a square foot garden is also an easy way to supplement and it’s cheap to start and maintain and customizable for a family. Thanks for all the great advice. Just subbed 😘

Katy Huckabee, no convenience fee at either Walmart, I do pickup. They do require a $30 purchase. Instead of a paper list, I just add to my cart. Then when my husband gets paid,I check out and go pick up at a designated time. They are better at selecting produce than I am. The Costco in my area doesn't have delivery or pickup. I make a list in the app and stick to that. I have it organized by location. I try to get in and out as fast as possible.

I stick to 3 rules: 1. I always take a shopping list with me. That way I tend to stick to what I really need. 2. I usually buy store brands with only a few exceptions. 3. I always double check my cart before I go to the counter. If I put in something I don't need, it goes right back to the shelf.

When the pandemic began, I started grocery shopping for my 80 year old grandma, and she taught me soooooo much. She has always had two refrigerators. One inside that’s for things that need to be eaten within the week, and the other to stick pile whenever there’s a good deal at the store. She also saves as much food as she can and tries to never throw things out. Also, my dad is a vendor with Lance so I learned very early on about the freshest in the back move! 😂 Thanks for a great video, I’ll be checking out more and subscribing!

I think the generic vs. brand name = same exact product argument is sometimes true, but I've tried Great Value cream of mushroom soup and it's definitely not the same thing as Campbell's. I would recommend that you buy a can of brand name and generic and open them both up and see how they are actually different. I did not enjoy the flavor/texture of the store brand cream of mushroom soup, but I do like Campbell's. It really depends on the product. For example, I do like Great Value peanut butter and it's crazy cheaper than brand name. But other things... nah-uh.

One tip that I've seen is if you like the name brand better, try to find a coupon for it and use it on the name brand. The name brand with a coupon will save you more money if you know you won't eat the store brand.

I agree Alisa. I love Campbell's soups. I also noticed a difference in Fry's (Kroger's) peanut butter. Store brand was runny. And I don't usually buy meat from Walmart. Their meat has a water/salt solution added. I buy from Safeway or Fry's for meats. This week Albertson's has eggs for .88cent a dozen with a digital coupon. Can't beat that.. well, a couple weeks ago they had eggs for 77cent. And Safeway had a digital coupon for a 'Free dozen. I also use the Walmart Savings Catcher..

@@donnamanning6286 I have new for you: everyone adds salt water (aka brine) to their meat to help preserve it. Salt is a natural preservative. Unless you are getting your meat from a butcher, it will have brine in it.

I agree 100% the Campbell's and genetic are not the same soup with a different label. You can decide if you want to save the money or not by what you are using it for. If it's in a gravy or something, go for the generic maybe, but eating it for soup, I have to have Campbell's.

Love these tips, especially cause I do almost all of these. The only exception is the cream soups - Depending on my recipe, especially in a dip, will use Campbell’s over the store brand. I’ve tried several off-brand and store brands and I’ve learned through trial and error that Campbell’s is a little thicker and makes a difference in the taste in the end. Another tip - when the produce is on discount/sale - like broccoli or green beans, I will buy extra and cut them up to store in the freezer. Thanks Jordan! Love your videos ❤️

I think name brands & store/generic is touch and go. Most foods I get the store brand. I get the store brand excedrine and ibrophen. One time I got a store brand apricot face scrub instead of the St. Ives brand and the formula was totally different. The concentration of exfoliating granules was much, much less than the actual brand. Just experiment I guess.

I do a lot (already) of what you suggested in this video, except for one major difference… I tend to hold off on getting the dairy and frozen stuff (like ice cream & frozen meats, etc) till the end. My mom, bless her, taught me lots of tips on how to save money shopping.... Many of the same you shared! I spend more per person than you recommend, thanks to some dietary needs in our family, but I still try to save as much as I can. Buying meat close to the sell by date really saves money. I also buy meats on sale and freeze and stock up. I shop at BJ's (like Costco) and use the coupons. Also check in your area and see if there are any discount grocery stores or farm stands. Sometimes you can pick through and find good stuff. Or if, for instance, strawberries are in season and a really good price, I will stock up and freeze them for smoothies. Don't buy produce that is not in season! It won't taste as good and it will be more expensive. That means we eat more oranges and Clementines and grapefruits in the winter and early spring, and strawberries and other seasonal fruit in the spring, and melons and other berries and such in the summer, and then a lot of apples pears and grapes in the fall....

Hubby and I have a budget of $500/month for a family of 9. My favorite money savers are: going to the discount bread store, the discount bakery rack at Walmart, chipping in together with other family members to buy a whole or half animal to store and use over several months, Costco coupons!!! (Woot-woot! You can plan your stock-up, as certain things come around regularly.), Case Lot sales of course (the good ones...wait for them and have enough on hand to skip if they aren't a good deal), learn to make the most amazing beans and rice ever so you can have them often and still enjoy them lol, and teach the kiddos to cook...plus others. We have one kiddo who just makes sure we don't run out of hard boiled eggs. It is a lot cheaper, and healthier, and they stay full faster, if they are snacking on protein and things we've made ourselves. Thank goodness soaked blender pancakes made w/ milk kefir is one of their favorites! There are lots more money saving things of course, gardening, canning and such...but my favorites are the ones that save me money and I have time for without running me ragged. :)

I meal plan out 2 weeks in advance. I plan husbands lunches and what I’m feeding the kids. If i can make it from scratch then i will try and plan to make in bulk and freeze to reheat. I shop every 2 weeks as well. Also Walmart, even discounted is not cheap. I shop at a store called Winco for the bulk of my groceries and save lots. I also check the price per oz for everything because sometimes the larger package isn’t cheapest. Also sometimes it cheaper to buy apples in a bag vs lose. I always use my calculator.

Hi Jordan!! I work at Walmart and one tip I want to share is to never buy name brand cream cheese blocks!! The Great Value brand is just as good and half the price. And it usually goes in a dish of some sort anyway. It is important to plan though for any holiday gathering as people stock up on this item and it just flies off the shelf, leaving the last minute shoppers buying the name brand. It happened to me once and I vowed to never let it happen again. I really enjoy your channel...thank you for shopping at Walmart!!

Ms. Jennifer's Life I don't really see the point in that because the pesticides get into the fruit/veggie, they don't just sit on the skin. Also if they are GMO they are affected from the inside. The actual seed and the plant that grows from it have toxins from the start.
@MeganAlinaBlair
@MeganAlinaBlair 6 лет назад
No they are probably not pesticide free but they are greatly reduced. Many fruits and veggies that have thicker skin have a lower content of pesticides. For example avocados have some of the lowest. If you can’t afford to buy all organic it’s a doable option for many families. Less is way better then more.
@msnae0101
@msnae0101 6 лет назад
There is no scientific evidence to suggest that GMOs are unhealthy or dangerous. They actually reduce the amount of pesticides that farms need to use. Organic crops are still sprayed with pesticides, and some even more dangerous than conventional crops.

Unfortunately buying organic and non-gmo foods does not guarantee they are completely safe. Glyphosate, the main ingredient in the herbicide Roundup and identified by the world health organization as a probable carcinogen and heavily sprayed on gmo foods, is being found in organic and non gmo foods now due to drift and other factors.
@roserogers3336
@roserogers3336 6 лет назад
I did some research and the only reason why you should eat organic is of you have a bad reaction to a non organic food. There is little to no reasearch about pestdecides having a negitave impact on health/lifespan

I don’t know when I started doing it, but I buy two of everything. That way I use one and have one. Family members have said I am weird, glad I am not the only one who dies this. I also look for ‘dead meat’, which is my way of saying the close to expiration date, reduced cost meat. Check with the meat department staff if things are being marked down, sometimes they have a rack in the back that they are currently tagging. Another tip I got from my sister is to check all the tags on the sale item meat. Sometimes they get so busy tagging that they will make a mistake on the price. It doesn’t happen very often, but you can get really good deals that way because the store will honor it! My sister found nice steaks for .54 (instead of $5.40) and I have gotten family sized packages of pork for $1.00 instead of $10.00. I pointed it out to the cashier and she said they should have paid closer attention to what they were doing, and she rang it up as tagged.

I have noticed that sometimes generic isn't the same nutritionally as the name brands. I've been watching what I eat and had to get sugar free/ low sodium tomato sauce. I normally buy generic but when I checked labels I noticed it had more sodium and sugar than the name brand! Now this isn't always the case. Some things work just as well generic as name brand and for those times when nutrition doesn't matter or when content is actually the same I do buy generic! Just be sure to read the labels!

YES! A lot of generic products have cheap ingredients / extra chemicals / fillers to make them cheaper. I guess if you're desperate to save money it's worth it, but I will never sacrifice health to save money, especially since you'll probably spend that money you saved on medical bills and prescriptions! I only buy generic if ingredients are the same.

I loved this video. I like to watch videos where people talk the whole way through so I can hear what they're thinking and how they came to that decision on what to buy it really helps rather than some people how they just choose an item and don't explain why and I really appreciate it because it's not easy to walk around shopping talking to yourself looking crazy lmao A few tips to cut our grocery bill down is I've started a little garden and it's pretty new so haven't got too much from it yet but once it gets going it'll make a difference it's just the basics like tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, carrots, corn and the basic veggies and have started some herbs and spices too and have been learning how to make pasta sauce and some other things from scratch that are easy. I'm not a huge cooker so I'm all about easy so if it's something I can grow easily and make myself practically for free it's for me lol I have started stockpiling coupons and trying to look out for good sales to stock up on things that I can that are canned or can be frozen that will last if I can get them on sale this week and not have to worry about buying that same thing for regular price for the next few months I love it. Another thing I recently started was cutting and shredding my own cheese. I bought a cheap slicer that came with a grater and a container to store it in and I buy cheese in bulk if I can on sale or with a coupon and I slice up some of it and I have ziplock baggies I keep for shredding some and that has saved a lot of money and it's a lot quicker than it sounds I make enough for the week at least at a time. Ok I'm getting carried away lol

Bonjour One of your French viewer ! Love your videos because I always learn something : today the egg tip 🤣 usually I open the box and take the eggs one by one in hand to check ! I'm still learning at 53 and especially from the youngest and I love it ! In a way we are pretty similar according to grocery shopping and elaborating menus ! The difference is : I live in France 🇫🇷 and you are from the USA ! And it's so interesting to me to see the way you compose your menus, snacking... we don't usually snack in France except children who have collations or goûter. For adults we call it grignotage and it's considered as a bad habit But things are actually changing ! But not for good sometimes ! Oh by the way I gave the envelope tip to my daughter and a friend of her and it works for them ! They are students and have a few hour job in a week so they needed to be aware with the money they earn. And actually they go on with 3 envelopes ( 1 for the daily spend I would say such as food , transport... ) the 2d one for entertainment and presents ( always a birthday on the go) and the 3rd one for Summer holidays. And it works so well ! They save so much money ! And my daughter boyfriend as just started to do the same ! So thanks a lot 😉

Yeah if you graze nuts, etc through the day you keep weight down lose weight eat less at dinner,so snacking is a good thing. So I hear.

Lily Val>I think the French have it right with no snacking. Every time we eat our insulin release spikes, by grazing all day our bodies remain in constant fat storage mode. When insulin levels fall our bodies release energy (stored sugar as fat). When your insulin levels are chronically high you can never gain access to the fat stored on your body. The key is quality carbs, fats and protien. Eating more quality fats at meal time will keep you satisfied between meals and plenty of vegetables will keep you full. Look into insulin resistance, leads to a host of illnesses ie: diabetes, inflammation, arthritis. The French are some of the healthiest people in the west...so I hear;)

I would love to see you do the food stamp challenge. Nixon once said that ketchup hot water and pepper can make a tomato soup for poor people. Lol I love your tips. I feel so validated. I have also stretched my budget by growing some greens and herbs on my condo patio. And micro greens too. Not a lot just some. Kids love to pick them. If you grow fast things like radishes they love it more. Ha ha ha

I would be really interested to see a comparison shop of the things you mentioned not to but vs the ones we should. Just to see how much money we can save. Great video, thanks for the tips!

Price match, go to discount sections, buy generic, use coupons or buy 2 or more deals, use the grocery stores point systems if they have that!

also, pls pls pls!! try your best not to reach for those items at the back! if the particular item is not sold by the best by label, 1. they might relabel it for a day or two more. 2. it just goes to waste. if you're intending on getting the item to eat/drink, you probably only need to reach for the first row of items. if you considered taking the back rows, it means that the item might be a impulse buy for u! so please, just reach for the first few row of items to minimise food wastage! :-)

All great tips.We mainly only buy when items are on sale, then we buy enough to last till it's on sale again. Sales run in cycles.

Jordan, thanks for these tips. You're very generous. I wish so badly you would learn about what plastic does to our ocean life, and would bring your own bags to the supermarket and set a good example for all the excellent people who follow you. This is something you have within your power to do. Love C xo

@@sabriellelunin9291 In landlocked states? Trash goes to the landfill. Plastic bags don't travel through the ground to rivers and oceans, idiots put them there.

Very interesting. All those tips are very common in Asian culture. My frugal side always loves a deal or free even if I make enough to afford full price. I’d rather use the money on something else plus I enjoy seeing how much I saved. Also, if you see a product such as packaged meat that is within 3 days of its sell by date, you can bring it to the meat counter and ask for the discount sticker (yellow sticker you referenced in the video). I get several items that I can get stickers for and vacuum seal most things and freeze them and they keep much longer or cook with it right away ina dish that can be frozen and thawed later for a quick meal.

I'm the crazy mom teaching my 10 and 8 year old about looking at the price per oz, generic being generally the same and also the expiration dates.
