Today we're sharing some tips on how to garden through the summer in Arizona! We've mostly focused on growing fruit trees and creating microclimates in our backyard, but we are also really excited about growing veggies in raised bed gardens! While there is no right or wrong way to grow your own food, we'll talk about some of the things we've done for our own greatest success!
We're fortunate to be able to garden all 12 months out of the year here in Arizona, but that doesn't mean that it is always easy. In the summers, we see temperatures reach 115 degrees, which can be pretty intense on our plants! But with a few little tricks, they can survive the summer and thrive!
Provide enough water to your plants! To us, this means hand watering every day when it is hot. Drip irrigation is great, but we feel that providing consistent, even watering through the entire garden provides the best results.
Also make sure that you are planting in great soil! Most veggies prefer loose, deep, rich, loamy soil to grow in. This sometimes means you are investing more money into your garden at the beginning, but it will save you time and money later on because your plants will be growing at their absolute best. We tried 4 different soil combinations in our backyard before deciding that the most important ingredient to add to our raised beds is Happy Frog Soil Conditioner. We can't promote this product enough! It's packed full of organic food ingredients that our plants LOVE. We get ours at A&P Nursery for about $20 per bag, and we're planning on planting our next fruit tree in this stuff! Since vegetable plants have such short life spans compared to trees, they will go through nutrients quickly. But the more good stuff you put in your soil, the more good stuff you'll get back in terms of fruit production and quality!
Also make sure to provide your garden with plenty of sunlight. Just keep in mind that in Arizona, you may need to also provide some shade for afternoon relief. Whatever you do, work with the space you have and you'll find success!
What is your favorite summer veggie to grow? What is your tip for the greatest success? Let us know in the comments!

I'm planning on taking advantage of this current season to start sowing and transferring some vegetables, herbs, and also flowers for natural pest control into my very first backyard garden here in AZ. I'm trying to avoid becoming too ambitious with the project and overwhelming myself too soon, as I want to decrease my likelihood of quitting what could become a very rewarding and sustainable lifestyle change. Videos like this inspire me and give me a vision of where I want my garden to go! Thank you guys. Maybe one day I'll officially go from 5 gallon buckets to raised beds.

We always recommend starting small, and definitely don't up -- you will have failures, but learn from them and do something different the following season. Hope your summer garden is doing great! Thanks for sharing :)

We started late April and are researching and learning what we did wrong and what is sort of working pretty fast! We will be moving in a year and love what you're doing! Thank you so much for both of your beautiful enthusiasm! You have fans here in Tucson!Beautiful souls! All three of you!! Greenie makes the video perfect!

Beautiful garden you two. Well done!! I planted a dozen fruit trees and started a couple of raised beds in my Glendale backyard last fall. It’s been quite challenging and a ton of fun. This month I’m obsessively preparing everyone for their first summer in the ground. Wish me luck. Your videos are inspiring. Thanks for sharing your experiences Thanks also for the Happy Frog recommendation. I will try that for sure.

I just found you and I am impressed with what you have done along with your encouragement & enthusiasm for Arizona gardeners. Please continue making your videos. I suggest you severely trim your tomato plants so you get better and quicker production. I had to learn to do this by watching several YT videos...and my plants are really producing!!! I am retired but I am never too old to learn.

This is so amazing and super inspiring! I purchased a bunch of seeds and am in AZ, how do you suggest I begin sprouting my seeds? Indoors? It will be June by the time I receive my seeds. I'm not sure whats best.
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
Depending on what kinds of seeds you got, some can be grown directly outdoors in June (melons, squashes, sunflowers). Others should be started indoors (peppers, basil, cucumbers). Any winter veggies you bought can go directly into the garden in October. Hope this helps! Please reach out if you have any other questions.

You guys have an awesome garden and the most important thing is to work with what you have...I have a small section of morning sun afternoon shade (2 feet wide and maybe 10 ft long) it has a ton of big rocks...even after digging a good foot in...I also have a wider area 6ft by 16 ft that gets afternoon sun, morning shade. What should I plant on those areas? Friendly veg plants for beginners? I’m Mexican so would love to have vegs and herbs and avocados for my salsas and guaca and my kids love sweet potatoes and cucumbers. Sorry! That was a long message but I want to start gardening with them this July, be a family project 😊 thank you for reading me!
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
Thank you so much for the love! Depending on where you live, avocados may just be experimental plants, and they can be tricky to grow so not the best plant for a new gardener. You can definitely grow veggies and herbs in the morning sun/afternoon shade location, and can try some hardier plants like citrus, pomegranate, artichokes, or basil in the afternoon sun location. Hope this helps! Please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!

Great garden! I’ve been trying to grow tomatoes but they only get about golf ball size. Any suggestions? Also, what fertilizer do you use? Thanks!
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 5 лет назад
It might sound obvious, but the first thing would be to check the variety you are growing; is it supposed to be larger than a golf ball? Tomatoes come in all shapes, sizes, and colors :D If you're not feeding regularly, add some compost, worm castings, fish emulsion, or Happy Frog Soil Conditioner to your beds! Happy gardening! :D
@pzorro3760
@pzorro3760 5 лет назад
Thanks for the reply! The tomatoes are of the larger "big boy" type. I'm guessing my soil is lacking. I've heard of Happy Frog Soil and will be trying it.

Your garden looks amazing! I have a question for you both. Do you have any issues with animal pests? I feel like I'm waging a war against rodents and birds. Last summer tiny finch-like birds decimated my tomatoes and bell peppers and so far this year, some kind of rodent keeps digging up portions of my raised beds even though I have poultry fencing going up at least 3' in some areas and 5+ feet in others. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
We haven't had any animal pests like that, but have you considered planting a different food source for them? Maybe if there is something else in the yard that they are allowed to eat, it can keep them out of your garden. :D

The weather has been crazy this year. My tomato plants didn't start growing until a few weeks after that last snowstorm. They're still growing and haven't produced flowers yet. I live in an apartment that gets sun all day and only a small section of the yard gets part shade. How can I get the plants to set fruit now that it's going to be upper 90s next week?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
Hope you were able to get some tomatoes this summer! If you haven't already, just provide some afternoon shade when the temperatures reach 100 degrees, it should help extend the fruiting period of your tomato plants :)
@kat1984
@kat1984 4 года назад
I have gotten some tomatoes that are just starting to ripen. Lots of mystery plants, I didn't plant any sun gold cherry tomato plants but I have 1 plant where the tomatoes have stayed a bright gold for over a week with no sign of turning feed. And I'm getting "yellow pear " tomatoes that are turning red. I have no idea how this happened

Getting hot. We havea west facing backyard. Front is HOA. South side has possibilities.
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
Our yard is set up the same way; you can make a garden work in a west-facing location, but it will require some shade cloth and isn't the most ideal area for a garden. If you have space on your south side, that would probably be your best bet, although you'll still want to provide some shade in the afternoon in the summer. Please reach out if you have any questions!

@GreeniesGarden
