Today we're sharing some tips on how to garden through the summer in Arizona! We've mostly focused on growing fruit trees and creating microclimates in our backyard, but we are also really excited about growing veggies in raised bed gardens! While there is no right or wrong way to grow your own food, we'll talk about some of the things we've done for our own greatest success!
We're fortunate to be able to garden all 12 months out of the year here in Arizona, but that doesn't mean that it is always easy. In the summers, we see temperatures reach 115 degrees, which can be pretty intense on our plants! But with a few little tricks, they can survive the summer and thrive!
Provide enough water to your plants! To us, this means hand watering every day when it is hot. Drip irrigation is great, but we feel that providing consistent, even watering through the entire garden provides the best results.
Also make sure that you are planting in great soil! Most veggies prefer loose, deep, rich, loamy soil to grow in. This sometimes means you are investing more money into your garden at the beginning, but it will save you time and money later on because your plants will be growing at their absolute best. We tried 4 different soil combinations in our backyard before deciding that the most important ingredient to add to our raised beds is Happy Frog Soil Conditioner. We can't promote this product enough! It's packed full of organic food ingredients that our plants LOVE. We get ours at A&P Nursery for about $20 per bag, and we're planning on planting our next fruit tree in this stuff! Since vegetable plants have such short life spans compared to trees, they will go through nutrients quickly. But the more good stuff you put in your soil, the more good stuff you'll get back in terms of fruit production and quality!
Also make sure to provide your garden with plenty of sunlight. Just keep in mind that in Arizona, you may need to also provide some shade for afternoon relief. Whatever you do, work with the space you have and you'll find success!
