Episode 64
The Guardian Legend is one of the most insane games for the NES - Blending shooter gameplay similar to Zanac with exploration similar to The Legend of Zelda seems like a game concept that wouldn't work, but The Guardian Legend totally nails it!
Of course, considering this game was made by Compile - the absolutely legendary shooter developer that brought us games like Gun-Nac and Space Megaforce - so the shooter gameplay is top notch, but the Zelda action doesn't take a back seat - it's also great!
So how did this incredible game find its way into our Nintendos? In today's episode we'll find out, and then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* Where to find EVERY ITEM and EVERY WEAPON UPGRADE!
* The best way to navigate the corridors and mazes of Naju - We won't be attacking the levels in the standard order!
* The SECRET to unlocking the LOST FRONTIER - A hidden world that exists outside the boundaries of the map!
* Damage rates and chip costs for ALL WEAPONS!
* Maps for ALL Areas!
* How item drops work, and how to force them to appear when you're desperate!
* How to level up your HEALTH -The secrets of scoring points!
* The best strategy for ALL of the corridors - even the optional ones!
* How to defeat EVERY BOSS, even the ones in the final BOSS GAUNTLET... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

Although never stated in the US version, in the Japanese version, the protagonist's name is System D.P. and her nickname is Miria. Miria's portrait is during the credits, which is how she's supposed to look: a petite high school girl with short brown hair.

Honestly, Blue Optomon and Red Grimgrin are the single hardest bosses in the game (at the time you encounter them) outshining even the final boss. Personally I think those two are tied as the hardest corridors to defeat but, I would agree that your first real roadblock is corridor 3.
@Ryufl
@Ryufl 2 года назад
I wouldn't say that the corridor rush is easier towards the end compared to the normal game. Sure, there is one more Red Lander along the way, but there are only 2 offensive upgrades and 4 defensive upgrades in there. Subtle, I know, but having guns and shields at 3 and 5 respectively instead of 4 and 7 has a very noticeable feel to it in game. As a reference point, the meteors in corridor 21 have at least 4 HP, and so take two shots at 3 guns.

@29:06 it's actually much easier to program it in this direction (Y+ = down). This is how all the graphics hardware in the system works, and it's just less error prone (and more intuitive for a developer) to use the same coordinate system everywhere. (Honestly, Y+ being up in modern systems/math is still confusing for me sometimes.) The reason why the graphics hardware goes Y+ = down is because CRT scan lines are drawn from top to bottom (i.e. line 0 is the top most scan line, and ~240 is the bottom most).
@tigerofdoom
@tigerofdoom 2 года назад
Ah, beat me to it. Came to say the same about scan lines. I've never touched NES hardware, but Gameboy works like this. Y going up as you go down holds true in modern games like Minecraft, and even on web pages.

"I don't know why (the shopkeeper) would want to help us." Probably for the same reason he's willing to sell the alien stranger weapons in the first place: to get rid of the infestation of Naju and see the mission to activate the self-destruct completed, even at risk to himself. Were the "Round Creatures" the original benevolent inhabitants of Naju who created the civilization? The invaders mostly look like natural creatures while the shopkeeper offers high technology compatible with the Guardian (nature vs. technology).

For those interested, IREM still holds the rights to the title. Although Compile developed it, it was a commission (rights reserved) to IREM. Back in 2012, someone contacted IREM directly, the response was that, yes, they retained the rights and weren't interested in further developing it or selling off the rights. Now it's 2022, I think it's about time someone up and asked IREM once more about the title rights or a possible remake. It would be nice if Compile Heart (the spiritual successor to Compile) could acquire the rights and do something with it. If multiple people make the inquiry, it might just be enough to get IREM to budge.
