Vdalem43 I remember watching the episode and my heart just sunk. Alan had been my favorite character since I was a kid. Definitely didn’t see it coming.
I am so glad that a friend told me about this channel. Been watching old shows. When Phillip said that Alan had given him happiness, it was like a bookend to an episode back in 1984, with Chris Bernau. His Alan was leaving town. This was after Phillip's true parentage had been revealed, so the relationship between Alan and Phillip was very strained..In the good bye scene, Alan told Phillip that all he had wanted to do was to bring happiness to Phillip. So, to hear Phillip say that in this scene 😪😪😪😪
In my own way I kind of felt bad for Alan. He really didn't have "anyone" and neither did Alex. Beth/Phillip Buzz/Lillian Billy/Vanessa got a second chance and deep down he knew he lost it multiple times no matter how many chances he got to get it right. Another fan said it would have been great if afterwards, Alan went on a Holiday and went to Saint Gabriel for a Holiday and to discover that the Interior Decorator was none other than Hope (Alan Michael's Mother). She got clean, went for counselling was an Active Member of AA and did a lot of healing.
I thought there might be a crossover between Guilding Light and Young and the Restless. Could you imagine Alan Spaulding and Spaulding Enterprises vs Victor Newman and Newman Industries, Y&R would rule the soap opera world.
I just watched this episode for the first time to satisfy my soul's rolodex of favorite memories and finishing my favorite daytime soap of all time, my top 3 favorite shows ever. However these scenes with Alan were beautiful as well as gut wrenching to see especially after this character who has been hated for DECADES, and mostly by his own family for all the manipulation, blackmail, pitting his kids against each other, trying to mold even the grandchildren in his own image. I too was upset when...I can't even say it. All after stepping it up with Philip and making the biggest sacrifice I've ever seen and he had no regrets and said any parent who love their children would do whatever they had to do save their child. He went from being an s.o.b's s.o.b. to being mutually loved, revered and respected. It was like he gave Phillip his bone marrow and in return received the light of love that just emanated from him at this party, appreciation of life, and a new heart and soul that unfortunately he had to leave behind, but it didn't seem cheap or contrived, but was representative of complete redemption mind, body, heart and spirit. It was like he accomplished what he was here on Earth to do. My human emotions and heart are deeply saddened and feel like it was too soon, but at least they did this scene with amazing care and Ron , Grant, and the director should've brought several Emmys home that year, because I'm damn sure this episode blew all the other shows out of the water making that kind of well done scene, with a limited budget, and pulled it off without it being revealed in a tabloid or soap opera digest as an exclusive shocker? That is talent and I am saddened and pissed usually when a character is killed after they turn good like they have nothing to offer, but I guess they thought since the show is ending let's put all we got into the last hurrah out of love and respect for the longest running soap in history that has an amazingly gifted group of talented to the soul's bone thespians who are pulling out some of their best work when I know I'd be tempted to be crying my eyes out and my @ss off between scenes because I'm already missing my family who I spent more time with than at home and trying not to think about not seeing any of them for a long time or never again. Wonderful professionalism and talent and I am raising my drink to them and tipping my hat as well. Well done my glorious and eternal Guiding Light. Thank you🙏 for being there when sometimes no one else was, still have dreams I'm watching new episodes of GL and Atwt never giving up the possibility of a new incarnation and big production budget that allows them to look amazing even after various crashes and soap explosions and fight scenes.
Can you imagine how Surreal it must have been for Grant Aleksander to work with all Three Alans, Three Alexandras, and Two Beths. Then he comes back and a "New" Lizzie is on The Scene. Then Peter Simon (Ex-Ed Bauer) works with Rachel Miner, Rebecca Budig, and Nancy St. Alban (Michelle Bauer Santos) but he doesn't work with Bethany Joie Lenz.
@@kelvinblack9530 Ha! Ha! Very good! For me Michael O'Leary will always be Rick Bauer like Grant Aleksander would be Phillip Spaulding. In the UK Chris Gasycone has been playing Peter Barlow on Coronation Street on and off for 20 Years but before him there was another actor whose name I can't remember. Here's another fun fact, Young Peter Barlow was played by Linus Roache who would later do Law & Order (US). His Father William Roache is now the longest running UK Soap Actor in UK History who has been playing Ken Barlow since December 9th 1960.
Ron Raines was the best actor to play Alan Spaulding and a great person to become the main villain of GL after Roger Thorpe. I sincerely miss this show.
They both worked with Bill Bell who was the former Protege of Irna Phillips who created Guiding Light. Also Christian LeBlanc was on As The World Turns back in the day around 1985 which as Guiding Light's Sister Show.
i am glad Phillip and Beth got back together. Phillip came back to be the good guy was at one time. I know most of you love Reva and Josh but i don't. Reva made me sick. If GL had stuck to its core famiies(Bauers not Reva) they still may be on today..along with better writing. There was improvement in the last few months.Rick and Phillip BFFs.:>
I think that part of the reason why Beth got with alan was because she wanted to "Fix" with him what she couldn't "Fix" with Bradley. He was just as abusive but he manipulated her. Also, I think that Alan wanted to use Beth to make Brandon pay for what he did with Jennifer Richards/Jane Marie Stafford in terms of Amanda being His Half-Sister and not his Daughter.
This particular Beth (BC's Beth) didn't deserve the reward of being with Phillip. In fact, there was no point to that character after she managed to break up Phillip and Harley. My dear Alan!
Yes, also look at The Bold & The Beautiful. Even after Eric found out that Massimo was Ridge's "Real" Father and not him, Thorne still took a backseat to him.
Granted, Alan always regarded Phillip (even though he's adopted) as his favorite son. But I don't necessarily think that he hated Alan-Michael. When Alan and Hope divorced, she took Alan-Michael in order to get him away from the Spaulding family value system. And Alan, resented his ex-wife and her family for years. And because Alan-Michael has Bauer blood in him, Alan, however unjustly, transferred that resentment onto Alan-Michael-as though he were somehow to blame.
@@malcolml309 Right On! They lived in Chicago like so many Springfield Residents. Rick did, The Santos had their Restaurant in Chicago, Ill, Rick lived there when he did his Community Service and Natalia & Rafe also lived there as well. I would have loved for there to be a Storyline where Matt Remembers seeing Natalia as The Round Girl when he met Ross Marler & Fletcher Reade at a Boxing Match. Or have it discovered that Natalia lived in an Apartment that The Santos had an "Interest" in.
