Me too dude. It was the first album I heard that the instruments in the music (primarily guitar) were just as integral (if not more so) to conveying the emotion/meaning of the songs as the lyrics/vocals. It was the first album that my preferred way of listening to it was laying in bed, in the dark, with my eyes closed, with headphones on and the volume all the way up. So dense, so many layers on the album, mmm, For example, before starting to play guitar I remember listening to the end of Turn It Again over and over when I first heard it; it sounded SO cool. And now after playing guitar for ~15 years I still feel the same way about it.

I believe people are into Frusciante because of the way his music talks to them.From the Mother's Milk to The empyrean his music breaths genius! In my opinion,he is more than a ''guitar hero'', he's a visionary master musician,constantly searching to redefine himself through music!What i've learned from John, is that music is the most beautifull thing in the world, and we should treat it that way! Peace ^_^

John frusciante is probably one of the best creative and original guitarists ever. Maybe not technically, but he had a georgeus tone!!
@fedoraman8967
@fedoraman8967 3 года назад
He has amazing technical skills, but he just doesn’t use them often because he plays what the song needs not to impress people with his technical skills. He started playing when he was 7 and could play every Hendrix song by 12. Dude is a virtuoso. Listen to some of the songs from mother’s milk I think his technical skills really shined with the heavier era of the chili peppers tho he was limited because the producer wanted him to sound like Hillel.

Listen to the Amputecture album by The Mars Volta. Frusciante played almost all the guitars (Omar did a few solos; sometimes they’d both solo at once). He plays way more minimalistic in RHCP but he is actually has insane chops. He just doesn’t like showboating.

Frusciante’s work just hits me different than any other guitarist. His stuff just has this emotion to it and when you play it for yourself it makes you feel something. I love listening and playing his stuff when I’m low because his music is the perfect way to express that. Most of his stuff just has this sad yet beautiful tone to it that just gets to you and that makes me smile.

To really get John I feel you need to really get into Niandra Lades and Usually Just a Tshirt. Of all his work his first solo album is by far the most raw and profound, but really gives guitar players a glimpse into how he plays. You probably know this already, but I've seen people who are personal friends of his not even know this record exists. Also the cassette has a couple different tracks from the cd. Just my 2 cents.

Some examples, his melodic soloing using scales/arpeggios/and other (by either expanding on the vocal melody or not) (i.e. Killer Queen, Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon, Hammer to fall, Friends Will Be Friends), his signature delay technique (i.e. Brighton Rock), his guitar-layering (i.e. Good Company, Scandal, Dreamer's Ball, Made in Heaven, Bo Rhap)

an exercise that I've found helpful is translating alot of pop songs and ballads into finger picked arrangements or just playing along with the vocal line in a song. This really helps with understanding melody over different progressions and how songwriters incorporate emotion into their songs. Doing this has really helped in improving my improv when you combine it with theory stuff.

Great lesson, really appreciated the funk strumming/fretting close ups and going slow. Also love that maple neck fat head stock think that should be standard for most if not all starts

In under the bridge Frusciante doesn't use triads, he uses full chords.
@balls6906
@balls6906 4 года назад
True, but he often doesn't play the root note on the low E string, so it's inverted.

I think Frusciante's most defining aspects to his playing are his strumming/groove, and his use of chord inversions. Like when he just rages chords instead of single-note soloing all over those outro vamps on Around the World, Purple Stain, Minor Thing.
@aleester
@aleester 7 лет назад
One of the wierdest inversions for Bmaj I've ever seen is the way he does it in the chorus of Under the Bridge ("I don't ever wanna feel, like I did that day"). Watch him play that B chord. That fingering is literally impossible for me to play because I can't reverse bend my fingers lol. Second example is his outro solo on Around the World. It's just Dm / Em, but again, watch him play and look at his fingering. Almost deliberately uncomfortable and difficult, which seems to build hand strength and contributes a certain sound to his strumming/groove based on which notes are muted vs resonating. i'm probably doing a shit job of explaining what i have in my head lol.
@5meo
@5meo 7 лет назад
hmm to me it always sounded and looked like a standard D-form Bmaj chord (from memory at least, as i haven't actually watched him play it for a long time). is there a particular video that shows what you are referring to?
@aleester
@aleester 7 лет назад
Yes exactly, it's a D-shaped B major, but the fingering he uses is wierd as hell, at least to me. Check the Under The Bridge lesson video that John himself did, figure 4. He uses two fingers to create a bar at frets 9 and 11, then hooks that pinky upwards on fret 12.... I am not capable of bending my finger that way! I would have just held the actual D chord up there instead of barring it like that.
@aleester
@aleester 7 лет назад
almost like his ring finger is double jointed or something! funny because this is the only way he's ever played the song, but every version of tabs for this song uses easier fingerings for that Bmaj chord.
@5meo
@5meo 7 лет назад
ah yeah i see what you mean, where it looks like he's flattening the first joint of his ring finger to get both of the strings, with the pinky then playing the B. and yeah, i couldn't do that either. oh well, luckily you don't need to do that in order to play the same notes and have it sound the same way ;)

I love this video...this guy is normal...says things that make sense and are useful....no lame jokes....I'm gonna subscribe to this guy's channel....this is how you teach guitar...this is what an absolute beginner like I needs. You've deconstructed, broken down Frusciante's sound in a comprehensive way...I don't know anything about chords..I can barely name the strings...I've never heard of triads....and whenever I watch in instructional video, I just get scarred away from all the theory they keep barraging me with, assuming I know all the theory, Just don't know that one thing that they're teaching in that particular video...this is great! Great job, man!
