I just did this exercise in front of my wife. With a Bm pentatonic, an E & an A chord, & she said, "Is that a song I know or is that something you wrote." Good stuff.

Ian! There you go again flipping on the lights. I've been playing guitar for 40 years and this never occurred to me. Man is this fun. I haven't picked up my guitar in 2 weeks. This video made me run to the living room and get my guitar in my lap and see what I can come up with. Thanks for Building A Fire. You're pretty great I hope you know.

On your G Major Pentatonic riff, your resolving F and C chords sounded like Zep "Hey-Hey, What Can I Do". So I paused the video, listened to Zeppelin, and now I'm back. Your videos are fun.

I really like this. Improv and soloing is nice and all but this content (rhythm) is what I need. I think it’s what a lot of guitarists need. You can noodle around all you want and play scales but it’s nothing if you don’t have the backing track or chords you know? Thank you for this
@rajennaidoo7

Please do a slow demo on how to transition in time and groove on a basic 4/4 at first.Understand fundamentals of riffs,melodic soloing,double stops but to play to even the slowest 1,4 backing track in 4/4 timing, I freeze and invariably mess up.Just count while you change with groove ssslowly.Have understood your aviation analogy,how to charter a route etc.,(Brilliant!!!) But no timing no music,chaos,cacophony.I thank you in anticipation.PS: Thanks a trillion for all the golden 'nuggets' you selflessly share.

Ian, this is brilliant. This challenge is a great way for me to integrate (and really learn more forms) these scales into music of my own. I've been stuck in this limbo of playing rhythm guitar but my heart yearns to play more lead concepts. This particular video speaks to me so thanks!!

Hey man, been playin just over a year now I’m not bad with open chords/some barre chords. Been complimented on my rhythm by people that’ve been playing for many years. This is exactly the kind of info/inspiration I’ve been looking for to make my own jam. Thanks

This video right here is going to blow a lot of minds. It applies just a very small subset of the topics that you cover on your channel, to tremendous effect. (“Yes, beginner guitarists: even you can create your own riffs and they’ll sound good!”) And it’s done with your signature and inimitable style. Let me be the first to predict it: this video is going to double your subscriber base.

Like another "way" to start writing riffs building off of this lesson. Great way to start to creative process or even starting to write your own material.

Using my meme account for this but I just wanted to say how incredible this explanation was, now may I add I’m no pro guitar player, barely so! I’m as green as the grass gets my friends, but I have an old guitar I play on regardless of knowledge and this tutorial just 4 minutes in with some close observation taught me the basics of everything I needed to know without the required knowledge! I’m playing riffs and I’ve apparently have been doing that somewhat all along. BIG UPS thanks for everything
