He said Tooth, he chipped a tooth during that performance and he also swapped guitars mid song at the beginning without missing a beat. That wasn’t a strap swap, it was a whole guitar swap
After Stevie plays the guitar with his teeth...you will see him look down..and when he looks over he says..."I lost my tooth" and then he will say "it's gone"...love , love SRV
I remember riding in my older brother's truck (with a 3 on the tree that I didn't understand) and the DJ announced that Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash last night. My brother let out some sort of a NOOO! and I asked who he was. My brother wasn't a waterworks kind of guy, but I did see some tears pool up in his eyes. When we got to his house, he played this song on CD, and my love of Stevie Ray was born. Before my brother died, I told him I love him and thank you for introducing me to Stevie's music.
Sadly Stevie wasn’t sober here, but still an amazing performance. You can see the drug use in his eyes when he talks, as well as the timeline of the performance. Thank God shortly after this he went into rehab. ❤️👍
Thank you,,,,SRVfangirl,,,.......for an honest reply,,...we all need the bits of truth about our music heros,,.....I was heavy into these albums after Texas floods,,,...your kind words just made my week,....this all before I had a family,,(yes that long ago now),,,..a life long fan here,...like you,,tnx,to whoever you are,,peace,,pat,,land o' lakes,wi....❤
I took LSD 250 and completely lost my mind. 10 hours later I just sit in taxi and took my ass to the most beautiful place in my city (Moscow). I walked ~2 hours just listening this live version and completely understood that our live is just place where we struggling, hurting and winning. I just want you to know, that yall not supposed to be afraid of your life conditions. As Stevie sayed, we have 1 chance in this live to get over here, so God gives us chance to LIVE this pain and to get free. So all of our situations in life only for understanding the law of karma. That’s so deep. I think the people can listen this masterpiece for 1000+ times and took their mind to the other demension. Peace for all of you, guys. We got some hard times, so we need some MIND CONNECTIONS, please DREAM, CREATE, WORK… Just do, what you want/supposed to do, people. I love yall. ❤️
Thanks for doing my request. Every time I watch that I'm amazed. Everything from switching guitars in the beginning without missing a beat to his overflowing emotional outpouring. Absolutely the best in my opinion. Thanks Michael
Shane if you're a member of Guitargate copy the video to your clipboard go to request reaction on Guitargate and drop it in. Coincidentally I have a Taj Farrant request in also. His tribute to Gary Moore.
This is a great version but I think my favorite is the one with the break and Stevie's talking about staying at the party too long. When that solo comes back in it's literally chills. Stevie should be here, it's just not fair.
It's a beautiful thing. I feel blessed to have been born and alive at the same time as SRV. Words can't really articulate the amazing player he was. Bombastic with the touch of a butterfly. Soul, in a word. RIP SRV. We love you.
@@andrewsmith1353I love SRV, however He kinda killed blues in my opinion. Nowadays almost every blues player sound like him, the long solos and also the way the guitar sounds when they play, they sound a lot like SRV. It wasn't like that before him. I mean, taking apart the ones that have been playing for longer than Stevie.
@@felipez7113 yes and no. Killed? a little harsh. If anything all those people trying to replicate SRV would mean he revived it, as was his main goal. I do agree that there are many copy cats but it also depends on context. Believe they're using his licks? Well he used licks from those that came before him so if anything he would advocate for it. I do get annoyed when a player just repeats SRV licks over and over, but I try to remind myself that they could be at a different stage in their guitar playing journey. Any player that's had an SRV phase has done it to some extent.
@@bribblr SRV sounds like SRV, BB King sounds like BB King, Buddy Guy sounds like Buddy Guy and so on. If people sound like SRV nowadays, it means blues died long time ago, because nobody is doing anything new. Taking apart very few people, like Joe Bonamassa. Take Kingfish for ex, great guitar player. However I don't thing he's doing anything new, like Leslie West did for example, playing blues like rock and roll. The same goes to the other players, they just sound like SRV, they don't sound like themselves, it is annoying. Jimmy Page sounds like Jimmy Page, he doesn't sound like Brain May or Tony Iommi.
@@felipez7113 Yes i guess I see what your saying. From a mainstream standpoint (who’s currently popular) yes there’s definitely not a lot of variety I do agree
This is my favorite SRV song. Live at montreux is a smoking version. And live at the el mocambo gives me goosebumps. His guitar is plugged into his heart and then goes to the amp.
One of your best analysis, Michael. The guitar finally said, “You win, I’m goin’ out of tune my friend. I can’t keep up”. I was fortunate enough to see him live several times. He played this song almost identical to this video. The passion is off the charts.
SRV and Derek Trucks were blessed, by whatever form of God you believe in, with the ability to effortlessly communicate emotion like no other through the guitar. Absolutely amazing.
My favorite SRV solo, every live performance of it is different yet magical and better than the recording. Especially when this song was dedicated to his friend's memory (the same friend who built the lipstick pickup guitar he plays this song on) and he would always give a speech in between melting faces on the importance of love, being present, and later his sobriety. For easy listening on Spotify the "Live at Montreaux Casino July 1985" is probably the best guitar solo I have ever heard.
I love that song, and your breakdown was beautiful. I've been playing (around) on guitar/bass for over 30 years and I've love SRV all along the way. So much more understanding of him through this reaction, which leads to greater appreciation. Thanks for doing this one.
he switched guitars and didnt miss a beat, srv did and does things to me no musician can. What he cant sing or express he played it. im so glad i found srv when i did, not only did he make me fall in love with the blues. fell in love with the guitar. Stevie... thank you.
Dude had more strength in his fingers on ONE hand than I will ever have in my arms. I could see him doing finger curls with 100lbs. If finger curls were a thing. 😂
I've been playing this song for the last year, it is my absolute fav. Stevie song. So souful and laid back. An absolute jem. Thanks for doing this vid.
I get so emotional on this song because no matter what performance you watch, it’s almost as if he knows just how great he is but plays without that loftinesses in his head, it’s just a jam session sitting on his bed as a boy after school but for me it’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard.. it’s literally nothing for him to be the most amazing guitar player of all time and the guitar is literally like screaming and crying all at the same time .. to be so talented and it literally require no effort to do so.. could listen to this song 24/7 365
He's floating between major and minor penta scale, but not just for soloing. He wrote this song around the chords that we can play OVER the first position of the minor and the near major . Oh, you just said it, 😊Anyway, great video !
SRV was an animal on the strat but then could switch up and play the sweetest most melodic riffs. I think this is my favorite performance by him, raw emotion that just grips you through the screen. He ripped his tooth out he was playing so hard!! I dont think there will ever be another one quite like him
I still get tears in my eyes when I watch SRV's last performance on Austin City Limits. He died not long after that performance. He had been clean and sober for just a little bit too.
I saw SRV's last show at Alpine Valley. He is and always be my favorite guitarist, because I was able to feel his vibe in person. What a great, but tragic night. I'm 55 now and I decided to learn how to play. If I can ever play with a fraction of his emotion and skill, I will be so happy.
As you know, I am a huge SRV fan. Note that the amp he jacked up is a Steel String Singer made by the late Howard Alexander Dumble. Insanely loud and clean!!
I was lucky enough to see SRV half a dozen times. Unfortunately a friend called and asked if I wanted to go to an SRV concert on short notice (that night). I couldn't. He died pretty soon after. He was always just drenched in sweat by the third or fourth song.
Hey Michael, big fan of your reaction videos and I have zero idea if you take requests here but it baffles me you have had a reaction to Matt corny - trick of the light live performance yet. If you see this, you totally should! As always enjoy watching. Cheers!
All the songs that Stevie had inside, waiting to be created...gifts from the heart, like this one in memory of Charlie. It's like a special treasure that gives me comfort just to know it's there when needed. 💔
Has to be my favorite performance of his, along with Lenny & Little Wing @ the El Mocambo. Just so much raw emotion. He's the reason why I picked up a guitar & don't plan on putting it down for the rest of my life.
Brother the version in New Orleans in white… that second solo after his speech gives my entire body goosebumps. It’s the most soulful solo I’ve ever heard!
What does everybody think, any chance we'll get a chance to see a another crop of guitar greats as the 60's-70's ala SRV, JPage, Santana, Clapton, Beck, the 3 Kings, etc etc that will give the youth of today the same joys these guys gave us all the way through our older years? The gods with whom the guitar became an extension of their body's and souls the way these guys did. Thank you greats!!!
I'd forgotten about this song, then fell in love with it all over again a few months back after buying the triple cd "transmission impossible". Such a killer pair of solos, probably my favourite SRV song.
Ahhhh awesome. I have always wanted you to do a reaction to this song. Hows about at the end after playing with his teeth he looks over at someone and says my tooth its gone. Whether he broke it or chipped it while playing with his teeth who knows but still awesome
That song along wit "Life by the Drop" are still on my play lists. I've seen Chris Layton many times playing with KWS and Reese Wynans playing with Bonamassa, but I never had the opportunity to see SRV. I still remember where I was the day he died.
I have to say that your reactions are so great! I can see and more importantly feel how much you love the music and your emotional reactions are certainly as genuine as you can get. My first love was guitar but i learned really quick that I just didn't have any chance to play. I have the privilege of being born the same day as SRV except 16 years later. Oct.3rd 1970. Unfortunately that is the only thing I had in common with the blues God! Although i found my talent in a beat up old drum kit. The very first time i picked up the sticks I realized that I had found my true love. I was watching your reaction to srv Texas flood live at the el Macombo. I literally felt how much you actually love what you do. I realized that the way you were reacting is the same exact way i act when I hear great music. It's undescribable how it makes me feel. I really just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your honesty and pure joy when your reacting to the music that we all love! Thank you and keep it real. God bless
I love this video. One of my favorites. So glad you finally had a chance to react to it. I must have watched your Ain't Gonna Give Up on Love reaction 2 dozen times. lol SRV = The G.O.A.T.
