Tyler Childers: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

April 11, 2018 | Lars Gotrich -- Tyler Childers writes songs about hard lives and hard love with direct heart. You meet these characters - some from his own life, some not - and feel like you know them, but there's always another layer to uncover with each listen, carved by his coarse and soulful Kentucky drawl.
In his performance at the Tiny Desk, we meet a miner and the consequences of addiction ("Nose on the Grindstone"), Childers' own in-laws ("This is a song about the first time I got snowed in with my in-laws," he says, expecting a laugh, and giving it a beat. "It's not a blues song, it's a love song"), and the love of his life, "Lady May." Only the closing song comes from last year's Purgatory, his proper debut record, produced by Sturgill Simpson. The others are regular features in Childers' live repertoire for now, but lived in and alive, ready for us to dig deep.
SET LIST
"Nose on the Grindstone"
"22nd Winter"
"Lady May"

Yeah country is not bad at all. There is a lot of crap but too me it's like the same thing with Rap. If you are interested I would recommend Jason Isbell, Sturgil Simpson, or Chris Stapleton if you want to put your foot into the genre of Country music. Surgil and Jason are both great song writers while Chris just has an amazingly Bluesy voice

Me too I mainly listen to some hard core shit like rock and metal. But I have noticed my RU-vid playlist is all these characters of this style now. I done went Folk, Bluegrass, country. And loving it. Think I may write something like this because I am a guitar picker as well oh colter wall. But tyler is my favorite at the moment.

I keep coming back to this as well. It bums me out that his albums aren't just him and his guitar. It sounds so much better this way. Perhaps now that Oliver Anthony blew up, that authentic, acoustic sound can finally be embraced again by record labels. A guy like Childers, with all his soul and great songwriting, should be heard in his purest form.

I saw Tyler at the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC with Colter Wall and it may have been one of the best shows I have ever seen. Colter opened and Tyler played for almost 3 hours straight after. It was incredible. They were playing in the smaller room and would go out and mingle between sets because there is no backstage area. They are awesome guys, awesome entertainers and awesome songwriters. Music in America has been polished to an annoying level, its about time we have some down dirty gritty music again and I think these two are good ambassadors of that movement.

How did it take so long to find this how come it seems and sounds so familiar to other things I've enjoyed yet I haven't heard this until now. And then Appalachian people get nothing but hate and derision from everyone (mostly people in cities) even though they're struggling. They get called white trash and whatever other insult by people who will then turn around and say they care about poor people. It's socially acceptable to make fun of them in many places for some reason even though they've been exploited in many ways over the years, especially by the coal industry and pharma companies. But no one cares. They just laugh.

There is plenty of good music from Kentucky. Bill Monroe was born here. He is the "Father of Bluegrass Music" Jean Ritchie was born here. She is considered the bridge between traditional and modern folk music. Roscoe Holcomb was born here. He was the inspiration for the term "high lonesome sound". J.D. Crowe was born here, as was Hylo Brown, Loretta Lynn, Tom T. Hall, Grandpa Jones, Darrell Scott, Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley, Merle Travis, Gary Stewart, Joan Osborne, The Everly Brothers and The Osborne Brothers. I could name a lot more. These are just most of the ones who've had the biggest effect on my musical journey. To hear another great Kentucky band check out my neighbors, The Pokeberries. It puts me to the mind of Tyler's "Banded Clovis". Chris's brother, Dirk, told me many years ago he knew Chris was going to make it in country music when Chris first played him "Down The River". Other Chris Knight songs you may want to check out for a start are "Little Victories" with John Prine, "Rural Route", "Becky's Bible", "Leaving Souvenirs", "Me And This Road", "It Ain't Easy Being Me", "Crooked Road", "William" or either of his versions of "Old Man".

7:38 I'm baptized in your name. The way he looked at the camera, seemed he was looking right at the lady he wrote this after. Good stuff man I felt that to my soul.

Dude, this guy is finally getting the exposure he deserves. Pure Americana, writing hillbilly anthems one after the other. Timeless stuff.

I love how he holds back a smile and fails to hide that first one when he sings Lady May, I bet he’s thinking about his lady. :)

Losing my mom in August really crushed me. I listen to the first song and put momma in the words instead of daddy, and instant tears. My mom always taught me to keep my nose to the grindstone and outta the pills. Miss you mamma.

Fucking phenomenal. I wish he would’ve performed a burner-to-acoustic song, a la Sturgill Simpson with “Life of Sin” on his Tiny Desk set, but that’s just being picky. He’s one of my favorite artists for sure.
