6 Reasons Abstinence-Only Education Can Be Dangerous
When it comes to sexual education in America, things could certainly be a lot better than they are. Sure, there are some schools that do a thorough job of teaching students about sex and sexual health, but there are many that only do the bare minimum… and then there are the programs that push abstinence-only education. This is where students are taught that abstinence - AKA choosing not to have sex - is the best way to prevent pregnancy, STDs, and more. And, of course, this is true - not having sex is the best way to avoid sex-related incidents. But studies have shown that an abstinence-only education is not the best way to teach students about sex, because it leaves out so much important information, and… well, I’ll let you watch the video. This week, Cheyenne discusses why abstinence-only education can be so dangerous. Of course, this doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with choosing not to have sex - it just means everyone should be taught the correct info. Check it out and tell us what you think!

Abstinence for the right reason is awesome. Don't do it to stay "pure" do it because that type of intimacy is special and should be shared at the right time with the right person when YOU are ready. Way to go.

Thousands of years of human experience has proven that, people are going to have sex so giving people the option to have safe sex is very important. Being abstinent is up to you but to try and push this bullshit motive on you

Thepreliminarycatguy I said abstinence doesn’t work and yes I am a Christian which is why I have a first hand perspective in this topic. Myself and my pairs were told to be abstinent even tho the average person is getting married at 30+ nowadays. I am a Christian but I am not perfect nor do I expect others to be

I thought this video had a lot of good points! However, I think we also have to realize that it's not a bad thing if someone wants to abstain from sex. Having sex is normal. However, not having sex is also normal. We shouldn't say one is better than the other.

Actually not having sex is not that normal if you consider normal as being common. But then again, what is really normal? No if you don't want to have sex that is not necessarily a bad thing ... for you. It might alienate your partner, though.

"abstinence-only education" we don't even have sex ed here in the Philippines. And yes, it's more dangerous. Lack of knowledge in this area made the spread of STIs and teenage pregnancy common in the country. And guess what, they still don't want sex ed on schools.

I live in Germany and it's not a thing here. Like NOT AT ALL. In school, regular sex ed is normal, we also learn about different types of sexuality and everyone is fine with it, even if they are religious people. Calm down America!

Oh, how I hate when people go all-purety-an-chastity. I mean, here in Italy we don't have a purity ring BUT some people are so close minded...a girl got merried attesa 20 years old and I suspect because her parents indoctrinated her so much she wanted to stay virgin till marriage and her boyfriend after like 7 years of relationship put a ring on her. I mean they probably got merried to have sex! And I don't say they do not love each other, far from it, but still.

Well I'm 17 and I decided I'm going to wait until marriage and that's it, (I've had boyfriends before and I've been clear with them) I chose that, I don't feel forced or anything, I rely in finding the person I love enough to marry and have sex with and have kids, that's it, (people around me who have sex, you can do what you want) and my point of view for me is that waiting is better, I'm an active Catholic Christian and I'm not a religious stupid misinformed zealot, I know how sex is performed, I know about contraception and std's, but I still will wait, because I believe sex isn't that important for your personal happiness, my last boyfriend ended up cheating on me with a girl who did want to have sex with him, they then broke up and he still is really unhappy, sexual pleasure won't make your life better, it's like eating chocolate, it feels good momentarily, but that's it

so 50's shame of sexual desire. Why the USA have THOSE classes? I had sexual education in the 4th grade in a Catholic School. It was with Biology class. Kind of weird listening to a nun talk about intercouse, but it was simples, direct and no shame in explwning. It amazes me also that your condoms are only 80/85% protective. In Brazil our rate is higher (93/97%). You don't Tell kids to don't do something. If you're ashame or stricly religious I'm Sorry for your sex Life, but is your choice. You do what you want and pleases (I know there's a lot of morality and laws in between). It's better to explain, instruct and eliminate all doubts so there's a lesser chance for disseases or not wanted babies or psycological damage.

I wouldn't say I fall into this but I have chosen not to follow what my friends were like at school. One day it would be 'oh I like you be my boy/girlfriend', have sex and the next day all hell would break loose. It was horrid! I would rather have sex with someone who loves me, even if we break up in the end, I don't want to have any regrets about who I did it with. Plus I hope that we would break up for a good reason and not something stupid like they got what they wanted. Anyone does that to me then they are dead!

Abstinence education doesn't even tell you about why you should only be with one person. What we should do is inform older kids all the science about sex, and then tell them the emotional side. Everyone should be raised morally. It keeps us safest.

Honestly I think people should be educated about sex when they are ready, which may be different for each person but abstanance only is not education, also I think people should wait until they are married to have sex, not necessarily legally married but married before the Lord.

It is good to keep your virginity before marriage and it is also good to have sex with someone you love before marriage. Some people who insist abstinence regard sex before marriage is dirty and I think it is wrong.(I am not going to have sex before marriage but I do not think sex is dirty)

there is nothing good nor bad about having sex before or after marriage except for that sex before marriage allows you to know if what you two are into is truly and go on into even further commitment. if i were to make a list of things done in order with timespan in a relationship it would go: just dating and hanging out 0 - 4.5 weeks sex and dates 4+ weeks moving in 4 months+ marriage 1 years + kids [maybe possibly] after financial stability. now you can do what you want in a relationship [as long as it's consensual] just telling you a very good pro in the argument of sex before marriage.

Well, it depends. If it's something you don't want to have, it is definitely unhealthy to have it against your wishes. But if you do, it releases endorphines and makes you feel better. It has physical advantages. Don't do anything you don't want to. But if you do want to, find a (safe) way, whether with someone you trust or on your own.

It is clearly written in the Bible to abstain from sex until married. There’s no twisting the words or trying to deny what it says. I don’t judge anyone for not waiting until marriage, but that’s my personal belief.
