Join Bryan from the Hair Band Basement and I as we discuss what we think are the great debut albums of the hair metal genre. Yes, a lot of the big names are here--Motley Crue, Van Halen, Poison and Skid Row, but there are also some surprises from the lesser knowns of the genre, such as Slik Toxic and Sleeze Beez. Come along for the ride!

Ignoring the mainstream multiplatinum artists some of my favorites include: 1. Hericane Alice- Tear the House Down 2. Cats n Boots- Kicked and Clawed 3. Tora Tora- Surprise Attack 4. Bang Tango- Psycho Cafe 5. Tuff- What Comes Around Goes Around 6. Every Mother's Nightmare-S/T 7. Arcade- S/T 8. Shotgun Messiah- S/T 9. Vinnie Vincent Invasion- S/T 10. EZO-S/T Not sure if it qualifies as hair metal or not but I also really liked Fastway and Wasp's first albums.

@@HairMetalGuru419 Thanks! Yeah, Bang Tango's first album is the best imo. I listened to the second one but haven't really followed them since. I was trying to remember a lot of the bands that you guys didn't already mention. After posting my list I remembered others such as London Quireboys, Helix, DAD, Trouble Tribe, King's X, Lynch Mob, Dirty Looks, Keel, Krokus, and Bad 4 Good that were all pretty good bands.

No Respect by Vain. My personal fave debut and maybe my all time fave Hair Metal album. Start to finish it’s all killer with no filler. I was so lucky to see them support Skid Row at the tail end of 1989 when Skid Row came over to England to promote their amazing debut also. As a 14 year old kid attending only his 3rd Concert (1st Bon Jovi Dec 88 New Jersey tour and 2nd Bon Jovi,Europe,Vixen,Skid Row Milton Keynes Bowl 80,000 people August 89) my mind was blown. I can still see Davy Vain barefoot on stage looking just like the album cover. They were sooo good. Also shout out to Love/Hate’s Blackout in the Red Room, Skid Row Self Titled & Warrant D.R.F.S.R as well. Love this channel Anthony. If I miss a video or two I binge them back to back to catch up 👍🎸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Thank you for putting me back to my youth with your shows 😉 I was born in 1974 and discovered rock & metal for myself in 1986 - thanks to my older brother, of course. Between 1986 and 1990 in particular, it was the glam/sleaze rock wave that I listened to up and down. I had the cassettes in my Walkman in constant use, especially on the way to and from school. Sure, if you include Van Halen, their debut is untouchable. I only included debut albums after 1980 in my list. My Top 10 Hair Metal Debuts are: 01. L.A. Guns - L.A. Guns 02. Ratt - Out of the Cellar 03. Cinderella - Night Songs 04. Guns N‘ Roses - Appetite For Destruction 05. Mötley Crüe - Too Fast For Love 06. Skid Row - Skid Row 07. Dangerous Toys - Dangerous Toys 08. Tesla - Mechanical Resonance 09. Love/Hate - Blackout In The Red Room 10. Vain - No Respect HM: White Lion - Fight To Survive Kingdom Come - Kingdom Come Roxx Gang - Things You've Never Done Before Warrant - Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich Johnny Crash - Neighbourhood Crash Slaughter - Stick It to Ya Keep on rockin‘ 🤘

Great video Guys!!! Good picks on the Top 10 on both sides. I'd like to leave my top 10 but for me, the list is not about commercial success. These are just my favorite top 10 hair metal debut albums of all time. Obviously, most of the overplayed albums I am done with. They won't be on this list. Excellent introductory overview. A few of my contenders, not mentioned by others below, that would have made the list if the well-known "biggies" like Van Halen, Ratt, Poison, Guns'n' Roses, Badlands, Tesla, Cinderella etc. were left out (remember these are debuts. Many have better sophomore and senior offerings) 1. Baton Rouge- Shake Your Sole 1990 - USA 2. Brighton Rock - Young Wild and Free 1992 - Canada 3. Tigertailz - Young and Crazy 1987 - Wales 4. Faster Pussycat - self titled - 1987 - USA 5. Shotgun Messiah - self titled - 1989 - Sweden 6. Junkyard - self titled - 1989 -USA (beware the similarly named non-glam Junkhouse) 7. Sea Hags - self titled - 1989 - USA As a Canuck it was good to hear Slik Toxik given some love. Not well know but unfortunately neither their full album nor subsequent EP have ever been released on vinyl. Interesting that the U.K did not go in this direction after NWOBHM. Why?

Love your channel. Love all your videos as always. I hadn’t listened to Lillian Axe since the debut album came out. I just gave it another spin. My feelings of the album haven’t changed since I heard it the first time. For me, just my humble opinion (without being a troll) is that their album sounded like a fake band in a bad 80s movie. Like when a prom scene comes on and a random rock band is playing for the prom. That’s what Lillian Axe reminded me of. I just never got their appeal. With that said…I love both Use Your Illusion albums and I only dislike get in the ring and my world. So what the hell do I know lol. I also don’t mind some of Chinese Democracy. I also enjoy the debut from Vinnie Vincent Invasion lol. The great thing about all of this is we all get to enjoy our own life soundtrack and thumbs up to any band putting their music out for all of us to possibly enjoy.

@@blaisebarshaw2534 I don’t really understand the term ‘hair Metal’ at all. It’s insulting. It only describes a look, and has nothing to do with music. Cinderella doesn’t sound anything like Poison and Poison sounds nothing like Ratt. Cinderella actually sounds the most like Badlands and Tesla. Such a dumb term. Hey, I've been enjoying your show. It takes me back (I graduated in '91, too).I have a couple interesting ideas for shows. One is, the top bands that you can acknowledge are probably good, or even great, but that you just couldn't (and still can't) get into. The other is, a show talking about bands, whether you like them or not, that don't really fit in to the genre but also don't really have anywhere else to go. A few examples would be The Cult, Queensryche, a band I never got in to but that comes up quite a bit in the comments which is W.A.S.P. , and even bands like (early)Faith No More or Ugly Kid Joe. Also, could apply to several of the later "hair"/Headbanger's Ball bands that got shoe-horned in such as Saigon Kick, D.A.D., Enuff Z'Nuff, Shotgun Messiah, The(London)Quireboys, Electric Boys, Electric Angels, Love/Hate, etc. (and a band I somehow discovered and still really like--Dogs D'Amour). Man, there was so much different kinds of stuff going on that most people had no idea about, besides the mostly untapped bands that fit more into the genre and get covered on your show quite a bit. Also, I had an idea having to do with album covers (artwork/pictures, not cover songs), both good and really bad, that I posted in the comments on your Major Mistakes.... video. Anyway, keep up the good work and keep on rockin'.

I remember 2 of the first cassettes I ever got. I was originally going to get Bon Jovi- Slippery When Wet and Poison- Look What the Cat Dragged In. After I saw that Poison cover (mind you I had only ever heard them on the radio as a kid), I thought it was some kind of gender bending thing. As a result, I got Cinderella- Night Songs instead as it wasn't as overboard. 😜 I didn't regret the purchase and didn't really get into Poison until their second album as I didn't really care for the first one after listening to my neighbor's copy of it. I didn't get Tesla- Mechanical Resonance until after The Great Radio Controversy; when I first heard of them. I'm thinking the original album didn't do well because it was barely (if ever) played in smaller areas. Definitely a killer album though. An album I'd consider for an honorable mention is Ugly Kid Joe- America's Least Wanted; even though they technically released an EP first. However, Guns & Roses could be counted the same way due to Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide. Any album besides Guns & Roses- Appetite for Destruction as #1 is just completely incorrect; followed by Van Halen- Van Halen. 😁 It could be an age issue as well as I didn't really notice VH until the songs Jump and Panama off of 1984.

I agree on Poison putting lut new music. Seems that Bret would rather release solo albums and tour with his solo band. Probably because of the $$$.
@patrickreeves4650
@patrickreeves4650 3 месяца назад
the main reason they have not put out new music is exactly what you stated. bret prefers to tour solo, pay his backing band peanuts, and make all the money. he also does not care to share the fame aspect. poison is offered substantial money every year to tour, but has to turn it down because of bret. they had offers from several larger labels to record new music, but bret insists on self-producing (additional money) and labels don't want albums that sound as crappy and cheap as his solo music. rikki, bobby, and c.c. would all like to record, but it is bret's insistence on recording the drivel he has already done solo, that the band wants no part of. just look at the garbage he has released in the last several years. the app song, girls on bars...i mean, i wouldn't want my name attached to it, and they don't either. around the time that rikki iwas doing devil city angels, they almost booked a tour using that singer, however after a private gig they did with him, they realized it wasn't the product they wanted, and scrapped the idea of a touring singer when bret threatened legal action. people don't fully realize that bret has saturated the market with a sub-par product that the occasional soccer mom fan enjoys. his band plays the songs half ass, and he gives a performance several clicks below the real thing.

Motley Crue Theater of Pain came out June 24th, 1985. Look What The Cat Dragged In came out May 23rd, 1986. 11 months before Poison’s debut, Motley Crue was all glammed out and had the Home Sweet Home ballad. I don’t think people realize how much bands copied the Crue. Motley was in jeans and leather for Girls, Girls, Girls, 2 months before Appetite For Destruction came out.

@mikeb.7183 2 месяца назад
Crue was ripping off Hanoi Rocks for the Theater of Pain run, Poison was ripping off Crue and Kix. Crue for the look and Kix for the show (Confetti cannons and silly string). For Girls Motley appeared in new jeans and leather because the strip guys had been wearing jeans and leather for a while, The difference was when guns showed up in jeans and leather with snakeskin boots but they were old worn out from wearing them for three years straight.

Love your channel, dude, but when you guys are doing these top tens, you should omit anybody that was a multi platinum seller. You talk about wanting to bring attention to unknown bands, and then you’re throwing Guns N’ Roses in Def Leppard and poison and shit into your lists. How about a top 10 list of bands who barely or never went gold? Vain, Kik Tracy, Love/hate,Bang Tango. I realize once in a while, you’ll bring up one of these bands,,,, But it isnt nearly enough I can go to 10 or 20 different channels and hear about poison and Def Leppard, fuck those bands, there’s nothing new to learn about any of them. ….I want to hear about the guys who didn’t get any attention. Other than that, I do like your channel, I’m from Fargo too, and always look forward to your new uploads

Van Halen is not hair metal, imo. They're simply classic hard rock, according to the great Martin Popoff. Tuff blows. I really dislike that band. The late Ronnie James Dio (R.I.P.) was right when he said only glam metal killed glam metal, because it parodied itself with copycat bands. And Tuff was one of those bands RJD referred to without even saying their name. And on a side note, Rush asked Mr. Big to open for them on the Presto tour after Geddy, Alex and Neil heard their 1989 debut. They were blown away by Paul Gilbert's shredding and Billy Sheehan's blistering bass playing abilities. I even remember Billy and Erik Martin saying via Rockline that they were honoured to open up for a legendary hard rock band like Rush. Never was too big on Cinderella's Night Songs. Too much filler. Side one has mostly bangers, and side two has mostly clangers, imo. Always thought Nothin' For Nothin' and Back Home Again sounded like the same song. Somebody Save Me should have been on the bangers side. Instead, they put it on the side with the weaker tracks. Four Winds by Tangier is a very underrated hair metal album. Only On The Line got heavy airplay from that album. Tesla's Mechanical Resonance is in my Top 5 Greatest Hair Metal Debuts, alongside Out Of The Cellar, Too Fast For Love, Skid Row and Breaking The Chains.
@HairMetalGuru419
@HairMetalGuru419 3 месяца назад
Agreed that Van Halen isn't technically a hair metal band, but I've included tons of bands that aren't REALLY hair metal--Tesla, AC/DC, Badlands, etc. Bangers and clangers... great fucking line.
@davej.meister5421
@davej.meister5421 3 месяца назад
@@HairMetalGuru419 I stand corrected on Four Winds by saying it's a great underrated debut. It is a great album, but it's technically not Tangier's debut. Their debut came out locally in 1985, on an independent label. And this debut was more in the line of AOR/melodic rock a la Foreigner and Survivor than it is hair metal. It wasn't until Atco/WMG picked up the band when they branched into hair metal.
