A highly requested video of my Hakuhodo favorites and some information about the upcoming price increase happening on June 1st, 2022. The company is increasing their prices by 30%.
The Hakuhodo USA website says they will be closed for maintenance on June 1st to 2nd so please place your orders by May 31st. The Hakuhodo Japan website will also close for system maintenance on June 1st.

Agreed the price increase is ridiculous. What Hakuhodo will find is that there will be a major decrease in purchasing. The last few months I’ve spent thousands of dollars of getting back ups and such because I refuse to pay a 30 % increase with continued decreasing quality. I can’t stand the synthetics they are putting in their brushes and want NO part of it.

Thank you for sharing, increase is here and there luxury items, brushes etc. I’m happy to make my first and last order before this increase so blessed to know hakuhodo before this increase 🤗

Most of my Hakuhodo purchases were based on your recommendations. I am not rushing to purchase anything because of an increase and after the increase I am not burdening my self to purchase anything that is overpriced.If the eyes are affordable, I will consider at that time of purchase. I have a lot of your faves! Thank you for your videos they’ve helped me build a balanced collection!

With all these price increases, I feel they are now becoming a true luxury and out of the budgets of most brush enthusiasts. Fortunately, the Chinese brands are killing it! I have been absolutely WOWed by some of the brands and their brushes. I fear they might follow with price increases too, especially once people discover how good they are...

I placed my first order earlier this year and have purchased several Hakuhodo brushes in the last few months ahead of the increase. We share some favorites. It’s new but I’m over the moon about my B509 brush. It’s my perfect powder brush. I love the J146, J142, G5523, B531, J242, B5521, B110, G5522, B004, G5545 and G5544. It’s sad it’s becoming so unaffordable because it really has become one of my favorite brush brands!

After the previous Hakuhodo price increase, I already felt the brushes were out of my price range. I hadn't bought from them in years. Now I really don't foresee myself purchasing theirs again. I did order a few from Fude Japan because of that YEN to USD exchange, so I'll be happy to have that final batch of brushes. One of them is the B104 that you mentioned!

I made my last purchase from Hakuhodo a 30% increase is exorbitant and they just had a large price increase in 2919 and with the addition of synthetic hairs being mixed in with the brushes I’ve made my last Hakuhodo purchase.

Agreed. Me too. I’m done with Hakuhodo. The addition of the synthetics added in sealed the deal for me for NEVER buying them. The price increase of 30% was insulting. I can afford it but why should I? I’m all for a small price increase but this is taking advantage. So I made HUGE purchases until the price increase and before they added anymore synthetics to brushes. They have already been slowly adding synthetics in to some brushes. Some brushes I wanted…but I won’t buy them with synthetics. I mean I’m embarrassed to say how many thousands of dollars I spent getting my hands on back up brushes and brushes on my list that I was on the fence about before they added the synthetics and the price increase. What a shame…

Hi, thank you for the review. I understand that the vermilion brush can chip because of the sharp edge but can the black handle chip too if it falls or can it get scratched in time?

Quality control? I've found Hakuhodo to be of superior quality versus Chikuhodo. I am unhappy about the price increase, but I've been nothing less than super happy with my purchases from them. I'm not a frequent buyer, and have only made 1 purchase per year since 2020 (I just made my 3rd yesterday). If I do buy in the future, it won't break my bank so I guess I'm good with that. I still think the price increase is insane though, lol.

I've had my Hakuhodo eye brushes for quite a few years, but I sat on my face brush wishlist for a while and only pulled the trigger recently due to their price increase. Some of the goat brushes I have similar versions from Wayne Goss and Rephr so I mainly purchased the goat/squirrel G series mixes. I am so tempted by the 531 but I bought the slightly smaller G5542 instead and I already have the Sonia G face pro so I can't really justify it right now given how many other Hakuhodo brushes I just bought 😬

I am planning to order the J104 from Toshiya as I am feeling a massive FOMO 😅. Your videos and knowledge are God-sent for anyone who loves fude 🥰🥰. I will try to order a few more brushes to get a 50,000 Yen order (another rabbit hole). Please let me know your thoughts on Hakuhodo's pure horse face brushes like the G5501 and 213? I trust your opinion, and may just order the J104 if these don't figure high on your liked/recommended list. I have the old MAC 187 and was also thinking about the J4001, please let me know if you believe the J4001 would be an improvement over the MAC? And once again, thank you so much 💖💕 Edit: I forgot to mention, that I bought the G503 (horse + goat mix) after seeing that you loved this brush as a blusher brush.

@Rummy Thank you for your kind words! I hope you love the J104 😁. I've never tried any of Hakuhodo's pure hose face brushes as I have a strong preference for their goat hair. Horse is nice but Hakuhodo mentions that it's the most common hair used for makeup brushes which means you can most likely get a nice horse brush from another brand for a cheaper price. As for the J4001, I have the Pat McGrath version of the J4002 which I believe Hakuhodo produced and really like it. It's old though but I would think that the Hakuhodo version of your Mac 187 would be better. The G503 is nice and big!

Thank you for the detailed sum&intro. Glad that you didn't include B002 in your favorite. I didn't catch up with deadline of May 21 with Fude Japan, and lost the chance to buy B002 and regret a lot recently. New G5523N is useless due to the synthetic hair. I purchased it last year on Hakuhodo USA site when it was listed as pure blue squirrel G5523BkL, I didn't notice I actually received a G5523N BkL until this year, Toshiya mentioned the mix of synthetic in a letter. When I rushed to start a dispute, I found Hakuhodo USA changed the description already :(

@王楠 You're welcome! I don't think you missed out by not getting the B002 so don't feel bad. The most important thing is that you have the Z-4 and Z-1 😌. They are true treasures. I don't have any of Hakuhodo's new eye squirrel brushes mixed with synthetic but what does the synthetic do to the G5523N to make it useless? How did you find out you got the new version instead of the old? Sorry that happened..

@@FudeKyun Yea, I watched your video and bought Z-4 and Z-1! 😄 G5523N can't apply naturally like pure squirrel, neither can it blend well like synthetic. It gives me a resilient, synthetic sensation, leaving sharp pigment edges. Squirrel hair itself is good enough and usually not that compatible with other hairs, due to softness difference. The only brushes that didn't mess up with mixed squirrel/other is Mizuho PM-1A and CMP527, but CMP527 feels prickly on fingertips (not on eyelids), though Mizuho is a veteran in mixing hairs.

@@FudeKyun China used to produce best calligraphy brushes because the largest animal hair trade center in the world is in China, not to mention the first invention of this brush was dated back to Qin Dynasty. However, when Chinese manufactures started to mix synthetic hairs into brushes, it totally ruined the calligraphy brush industry in China. I feel I foresee the downfall of Hakuhodo, somehow. Bisyodo is smarter to start a separate vegan line.

@王楠 Chinese gray squirrel is also still good at the moment so you can also consider those, although it can be a mixed bag sometimes. That's sad to hear about the synthetic making the Hakuhodo squirrel eyeshadow brush perform worse. I think it was fine for their face brushes like in the Kokutan line in the past but doesn't sound good for eye brushes based off what you said. The Mizuho pony hair can eventually become scratchy in the mixed brushes but it takes years. Need to use them up before that happens. The PM-1A doesn't look like it will become scratchy as easily though since there's sokoho and no pony. That's also unfortunate about the synthetics being mixed into calligraphy brushes in China thus ruining the industry. Not enough hair to go around I guess.. Hakuhodo did come out with a full synthetic line years ago but seem to be mixing them in a lot of their brushes in general now.

@@FudeKyun Good to know that Chinese grey squirrel is still good. I'll check on that~ I always got scratchy or non-functional brushes with medium expensive orders of Chinese brushes. It's intriguing that collectors like you are able to figure out most of a brush at a glance of ads pictures. Chinese brushes have too much pic editing. Glad that at least Hakuhodo has good synthetic-mix face brush. I just pulled out CMP527 and am going to use it everyday, before squirrel wears down and pony sticks out! They have durability difference; I haven't thought of that. I guess Hakuhodo synthetic line didn't sell as much as natural lines do. The return policy in China was not as convenient as it is today with E-commerce; it's hard to dispute (time&money cost); and we Chinese prefer competitive price...All these leads to manufacture issues.

Thanks once again for sharing your thoughts! The huge price increase is super disappointing. I purchased a few Hakuhodo brushes just before the price increase (B527, G503, G504, J4006 and J531 (the latter based on your recommendation 🤗)). However, I’ve always felt really curious about the goat + squirrel mixed hair brushes. I watched your holy grail goat and holy grail squirrel video, but don't think I've watched a video dedicated to holy grail mixed hair. Please let me know if you prefer pure goat and pure squirrel over mixed hair? I wonder if the mixed goat and squirrel hair really makes a difference in the application or if it is just a preference for sensitive skin types. I didn't purchase any goat + squirrel mixes before the price increase as I thought it would make the brush more prone to breakages but wonder if I missed out on something 😔

@Rummy You're welcome! I hope you like the brushes you got 🥰. I considered making a mixed hair video but never got around to it. I do generally prefer Hakuhodo's pure goat and squirrel (for eye brushes) over their mixed hair. The mix is softer and makes it apply more naturally and softly but I can get a soft finish with a pure squirrel brush. I don't think you're missing out but it really is personal preference.

@@FudeKyun Thank you for sharing your thoughts🥰. It's a relief, now I don't have any remorse for missing out on the mixed hair brushes as I prefer a stronger application and use liquid/creme bases. I do, however, regret not purchasing your other favourite, the J104 😥. I felt hesitant as this was my first Hakuhodo large face brush purchase and didn't realise how nice they were; previously, I only owned the J5521, B5521 and a few eye brushes. I skipped the J104 as had the Sonia G Face One; Chikuhodo Z-1 and (although not super-relevant as its denser) the Tom Ford 05 with the natural goat hair. Now, I wonder if I missed out by not having the best powder brush and if I should still get it because some people on Reddit were saying that Hakuhodo is likely to have regular annual price increases in the future 😞

@@rummy3397 Goat is the way to go for stronger finishes! 😆 It sounds like you got a nice J531 based off what you said. That's great! That's too bad to hear that they may have annual price increase in the future. Think about your favorite powder brush shape and whether or not the J104 would be something you like. If it would be and you're feeling massive FOMO then it'd be better to get it before another price increase but if not, there are other options out there. I love the J104 but I also think other round goat powder brushes like the Shou Shou Lang LL01 and Koyomo Pearl Pink Nadeshiko Powder Brush are awesome (the latter will give a lighter finish than the J104 though).

I have both and the Hakuhodo is way softer than the Koyudo. It’s an alternative but d rather the Hakuhodo 😁

I have definitely placed my orders for all the Hakuhodo brushes I want or need in the recent months before the hike. Unless they come out with some amazing brush in the future that I must have, I don’t see myself purchasing any of the face brushes either. Since Hakuhodo isn’t really known for specialty hair brushes as much anyhow that probably won’t happen. Great concise video, hopefully everyone gets what they need 😁.
