I remember seeing one of the Paranormal Activity movies in theaters. I forget which one it was, but there was an automated pool scrubber in a ton of shots outside, just chugging along scrubbing the pool. We got so bored that we invented a subplot for the scrubber. We said it was haunted by a benevolent ghost that goes from rich white person house to rich white person house, cleaning their pools when they're too busy fighting demons to do so. It was more interesting than the actual movie

This kinda movie works financially because so many people don't even go watch a movie for the movie. It's almost completely a social activity to them. They go on a date and then the scares are the dumbest excuse ever to grab a hold of each other. They will just use their cell phone in the theater. They will whisper to each other. You know. And they are usually not even aware of this. So the movie works better exactly because it has all these lapses of nothingness and everything that will actually happen has a sound cue.

The clunky and heavy-handed exposition from the "expert" just about ruined Sinister for me. Giving us an wikipedia entry on the dark and mysterious malevolent force takes away a huge part of the creepiness factor. Sure, the audience doesn't have to be left totally in the dark, but I just don't like being slapped in the face with information dumps. I think it would have been better just to have Ethan's character trying desperately to find information on the thing from books and lore, always unsure of himself and what he can or can't believe from the writings.

Sinister would have benefited if the twist wasn't that timeline thing with the demon. It should've been that the killer was an actual person that kills the family and eats the surviving kid, like straight up cannibalism. Genuinely disturbing, and it could've let them keep that weird demon mythos they wanted to push.

As someone who's a fan of the first Paranormal Activity... you guys made a lot of good points, and I feel kinda stupid. You seem to give the first some lax, but a lot of the points are still kind of there. Just set-up after set-up after set-up of strange things. But thinking about it further, I'd say the only reason the first could be much more tolerable is that you don't quite understand what is causing everything until about... half way? So there's at least a mystery there, and that does build some level of suspense. I also think it built up a bit better, but the ending is pretty atrocious. The ending where Katie gets shot at the end would have been better, I think. It also did hit me on a personal level. I've always had a thing against doors. Something about them has always spooked me, so when they start moving and banging for no reason, I do get legit shaken up. There was a good amount of that in the first one and some in the second. But, that really isn't any legit credit to the filmmakers. They just kinda got lucky I have this mild phobia. I suppose I'd still stand by the first one being at least ok, due having a special place in my heart for what it did to me on my first viewing. The rest, at least, I can agree were just... not very good. Well done in making me think.

Sinister also has some *insane* audio muxing - when I watched it, I constantly had to turn it up to hear people whispering extremely quietly and turn it down because CONSTANT SCREAMING.

Mike saying that he would recommend this movie like he would recommend having diarrhea actually makes a lot of sense. In both cases you should experience it at least once so you can empathize with other people who have to suffer through it, but after that first time you never really need to do it again.

The thing with Paranormal Activity is it plays off your imagination. It's almost a non-movie. It's not about what's on the screen, it's about what *could* be happening on screen at any second. The fault still remains that none of what it delivers lives up to its potential, but the draw and the fear is that anything is possible.

i think paranormal activity movies (or most cheap jump-scare-based horror movies like the devil inside or whatever) are popular because they don't demand any kind of engagement from the audience. a teenager can look at it's phone the whole way through and still be startled by the loud noise. it's incredibly insulting to filmmaking but it's lucrative i guess.
@CarEdy23
@CarEdy23 8 лет назад
Chris McRoy yeah you're right it is subjective and i was being kindof pushy. not everyone cares about film as art and that's cool.

@cleobinx

CarEdy23 that’s a damn good theory, you are probably right. Not every movie has to be a masterpiece , some people juts want mindless entertainment or they want jump scares because those go away quickly . Watching a “real” horror film that scares you on a intellectual or emotional level , can follow you for days , where as movies like this with silly jumps scares don’t do that so it’s safer

Paranormal Activity took a lot of it's ideas from the 1992 BBC television movie Ghostwatch, which is actually very scary and well made if your able to look past some low-budget British television jank (I personally don't really notice this but it can be a bit of a barrier to entry)

As a long time RLM viewer I can say 2 things after watching this pretty old episode of Half in the Bag(thanks, inexplicable Yotube recommandations). Firstly their reviewing part got better. Here is too much trailer footage, especially when talking about Sinister. Now it is more fluid. Secondly I had completely forgotten they used to do these small sketches in every HitB episode. Also, we can safely say after 7 years the found footage genre died off. Now we get better individual horror films and also horror cinematic universes.

Watching this again I am yet reminded that Sinister is a movie that existed that did some neat shots and that wandering around a dark apartment when you have a black cat is scarier than the entire Paranormal Activity series and has a more functional plot.
