I think it's worth mentioning that the visuals in the film were achieved almost entirely by practical effects. It wasn't water tinted with a digital effect, it was 50,000 gallons of stage blood pumped through a rain machine for example. The only thing CGI or digital effects were used for was to add in extra fire or to remove wires and equipment used to make the practical effects.
I actually just realized this myself: I saw it in the first ever audience test screening, in Orange, CA, with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell in the audience with me. Digital effects are *never* done when they do that phase of test screening, but what I saw was identical to the unrated version of the film.
Practical effects are generally cheaper than cg right? It surprises me that practical isn't used more often when it has the potential to look so much better.
@@tricursor2481 Well no, that's why CGi became so common. Way cheaper to pay one guy to make a CGI model than to pay dozens to pull off a safety monitored live action prop.
In the Japanese edition of Kill Bill vol 1 it stays in colour for the whole of the Crazy 88 fight which also has extra shots in it. There's also extra gore dotted throughout the film. Definitely my preferred version.
Notice how it takes place at night night is usually associated with alien abductions alien abductions are usually associated with people getting stolen and replaced so jay and mike were probably alien abducted and replaced by the same aliens in space cop and would later take and reanimate rich evens and replaced jay and mike with mike and jay that’s why jay no longer looks like a hobbit
I got a bunch of vhs and a VCR but no tv that will hook up to it lol only a tiny portable tv with a VCR built in that I can watch em with but that has no remote so I gotta use the other vcr to rewind lmao
@@matthillfromcollege4109 In 1986, my friend Jeff had 2 televisions in their living room. These were the old huge televisions you bought at a furniture store. The bottom one had picture and no sound. The top one had sound and no picture. Together they worked. But this was back before most televisions had remotes. So to change channels, you had change them both, otherwise you would see Dallas but hear Knight Rider.
Yeah, there's a scene where Ash is being dragged under the house, the camera is pointed up slightly and you can see the ceiling of the studio. I didn't notice it until it was pointed out.
I think the movie really works when you look at it as a commentary on addiction to heroin. She drives everyone away due to her addiction until she finally ods, hee brother is the only one to stick with her and she comes back stronger at the end, but is still broken.
Unfortunately being an addict, the decision to make her an addict kicking heroin was insanely horrifying in terms of how it set the tone. I wish I could explain in depth but it really worked into how dark everything turned. Experiencing that while being in the worst state imaginable is scary af.
Those withdrawals are what I imagine government torture programs attempt to do to enemy spies. Just get them hooked, let the withdrawals kick in, they'll tell you whatever they want for relief.
Yep, i really felt bad for the girl. Specially when she is begging to get out of there. I mean, that is really terrifying, cause no one would believe you, after all they are trying to help her.
Jay: I did see it without having seen the originals, but was culturally aware of the originals. I can say that you’re right, I loved it. :) It was a great gateway into Evil Dead for me :)
Seven years later: Jay himself refers to his voice as a "Steve Buscemi voice" when discussing Zak Bagins in their Demon House Half in the Bag video. :-D
Love how you guys dedicated this episode to the Evil Dead the tilt of the camera, you guy's acting and the house and the lighting was a nice Homage to the cabin
Having been a heroine addict myself and having gone cold turkey before this movie had an entirely different feeling and meaning to me.... this was precisely the feeling of withdrawal in horror and was an amazing composition. Though I do have wished they could have made it its own thing as opposed to a remake. And thats why I agree with the director probably wanting to do his own thing while Sam rami pulled him back because it did really feel like he wanted to take withdrawal and mix it into horror and it turned into 'Evil Dead somehow. Lol
@@olotocolo If we are talking Last Jedi it means giving the finger to all the fans, and either people reacting appropriately, or lapping it up like some masochists.
They were thinking of bringing the main character of this Evil Dead into the Ash vs Evil Dead tv series, but I believe that idea never reached fruition.
The remake and ash vs evil dead have super different tones. So I can kinda see why they didn’t go through with that. Wouldn’t have had a problem with personally though
Had to rewatch this review after seeing the trailer for the new one coming out. I still really enjoy 1-3 but 2013 was a different kind of horrifying to me. Still rewatch this flick from time to time. Hopefully the new film will live up to a worthy successor to such a banger franchise.
If you read from a book that’s wrapped in barbed wire and black polythene then you deserve everything that’s coming to you. At least with the original they listen to the recording which you could do and accidentally release the demon. If you find a book like that in a cabin in the woods you would never ever read from it
@@undeadposers4264 : It's called 'BrainDead' in the UK... Yep, one of Jackson's best, though I do prefer 'Bad Taste'... Both fine comedy horror films, and I'd love RLM to do an episode double-bill of these two films!
I liked the movie. I think some of the things people thought were supposed to be "super scary" were actually meant to be kind of silly, like the chainsaw scene at the end. Everyone in the theater was either squirming or laughing with excitement (there were lots of ED fans in there). I enjoyed it for what it was. I would be interested to see what their idea for a sequel would be.
Jay is my favorite example of how some grooming and fitted clothes can make anyone look bangin. You can tell when he sits down that he isn't even fat here, but his clothes make him look heavy, and his hair and lack of beard don't fit his face well. Compare to any recent episode, where Jay is #1 kissboi.
No not at all really, i still enjoyed it more than the original. And there is serious possibility Mia's character appears in the Ash vs Evil Dead series. People keep asking Bruce, Sam and Fede if they have plans to make a sequel to the movie or a crossover of the universes so no..it really hasnt been forgoten at all. Have you seen all the Mia tattoos out there?
I really enjoyed this movie as a huge fan of the originals. It was like the first film remade with a higher budget so that it's still as visceral and gory while still having that schlocky and cheesy feel to it
I feel that the movie would have been a lot better if the main chick had that Decent into Madness like the OG The Evil Dead Film, instead of focusing a series of incidents portrayed in the Necronomicon, which the Necronomicon was supposed to be written thousands of years ago by Evil Wicked Wizard people that wrote incantations, spells, potions and what not, inked in blood on human skin. So what do these random incidents have to do with any kind of spell or incantation ? Seems like a waste of Human Skin ... lol
I agree with mike on losing one's humanity at 13:13. When I go see an action movie or a scary movie everyone in the theater or even a girl I am on a date with will actively make noises at action scenes or scary or gory scenes. I am just sitting there with the exact blank expression he made. Maybe I am just dead on the inside. I feel like it at least.
Yeah, that bugged the hell out of me: head trauma, raped, scalded, tongue-cut, and an ass-whuppin' or two, fucking buried with a bag over the head, thought dead, then with no motion in between, someone used a Phoenix Down offscreen and she's standing without a scratch on her. And, of course, defibrillators don't work that way.
I love the originals, and I love this remake. I've seen plenty of gore through movies and video games and I just never get tired of it when it's well done. I watched this whole movie with a huge grin on my face. Plus, that final sequence with metal as fuck.
18:38 I agree. It is technically shot better and the production value is way greater, but it lacks the charm that the original had. Also something about the lower grade production is more memorable, like a home video or something. I felt the same way about the remake of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It looked like a very polished product and had tons of gore, whereas the original was way creepier due to its video quality, implied gore (save for the one person hung on the hook), and lack of soundtrack.
