Half in the Bag: Pam and Tommy and Bruce Willis

We're not done talking about Bruce Willis movies! For some reason. Or more specifically, for no reason. There's been two more terrible Bruce Willis movies in just the month since our previous Bruce Willis video so we wanted to get caught up. Also discussed: the Hulu series Pam and Tommy, a good show that you probably don't care about.

Damn, it's official boys: Bruce Willis has been diagnosed with aphasia and is stepping away from acting. Jack Packard's right, these direct-to-DVD films won't even come up in the conversation when looking back on his career... We'll always have Die Hard, The Sixth Sense, Pulp Fiction, The Fifth Element, 12 Monkeys, Looper and Moonlighting to remember him for.

I'm 85% convinced the recent bad press around Bruce Willis played a part in his family announcing his retirement. With the Razzie thing going viral, and the last RLM video getting traction; I think his family began to see the damage all these movies were starting to have on his legacy. Cos he's been making them for years but nobody watched them so they stayed under the radar. But when the sheer volume of them started to build up and become a meme I think that was a factor in his retirement. The timing is too perfect. Cos it must've been hard for his family to see him become the joke of the internet and be seen as a lazy, greedy old man who doesn't care about the work anymore.

@llJiggyFlyll
@llJiggyFlyll 2 года назад
I almost feel like people need to apologize to aging actors like Caine, De Niro, or Cage for taking obvious money jobs. Because as bad as most cash grab films are, at least the actors put in the effort to give a performance. At worst they're just a movie you regret paying for if you saw it in theaters. This new Bruce Willis stuff is so bad though, it makes Direct-to-Video films look like Blockbusters. Legitimately the only interesting thing about them is trying to theorize in what part of the film's production did the money laundering occur.
@Axterix13
@Axterix13 2 года назад
@@llJiggyFlyll Worth noting that Alec Guinness took a role in a silly American sci-fi movie for the paycheck, a role offered to him because the studio wanted some better known actors in the movie. @keefriff99

@@Axterix13 Guinness put down and demeaned the Star Wars franchise until the day he died. It's not that depressing. It depends on the condition that's causing the aphasia and whether it's a rapid or slow cognitive decline. By all accounts, it has been a slow decline for Bruce so he has been able to work albeit at a much lower capacity. Many people experiencing decline actually prefer to work as long as they can because it gives them routine.
@bwestacado9643
@bwestacado9643 2 года назад
He's broke. He gave everything to Demi and his kids
@angrytigermpc
@angrytigermpc 2 года назад
Aphasia does not necessarily mean cognitive decline. Bruce might be completely aware and competent, intellectually speaking, but he's unable to use the "right words". Some people with aphasia are fully aware of what people say to them and can still read and so on, but (depending on the type) they struggle with outputting the vocabulary they want to, sometimes in the form of not being able to find words at all and "struggling" to transmit their thoughts, sometimes fluently speaking but using complete nonsense to a listener. But their brain "knows" what they're trying to say, it just can't communicate it properly. Not saying this is definitely the case, but it's by no means certain he's (literally) demented. He might be completely cognizant of his situation and what's happening, and able to understand contracts and whatnot, so (as others have speculated) he might be using his fading ability to communicate to ensure his family is provided for.

I’m from Tifton, GA, and the filming of Gasoline Alley has been the talk of the town the last year or so. When I saw the first Bruce Willis video I had no idea that he had been cranking out so many movies. My dad still lives in Tifton and he went downtown and watched them film some of the explosion scenes. He smoked a cigarette with some of the other actors and they said they were all pretty aware that the movie wasn’t going to be great. It’s pretty weird seeing my small hometown in a movie-no matter how bad it is. It’s even weirder to hear RLM talk about it. Part of me feels a little mad that they’re using my hometown as the backdrop for a zero effort movie, but that’s the nature of the factory I guess.

My father has Huntington's disease. From my experience it's possible that Bruce Willis's attitude and behavior on sets in the last decade can be attributed to his illness. Basically, people with illnesses like that can exhibit traits of being depressed, slovenly and apathetic and can start to show change even decades before they get really bad and diagnosed. The changes you encounter in people like this happen regardless of the quality of the person's character prior to the onset.

I used to mock all B movies and Asylum fodder, but then I found out that SAG requires a certain number of credits per year for members to maintain some basic benefits like health and life insurance. So some of the films are justified, and for the majority of people in the movie and film industry those are their bread and butter. They will literally take anything that comes their way at the guild wage minimum just to keep health insurance for their family, while they pursue side ventures and creative investments for "steady" income. So a cast or crew member seeing some former A-lister sucking up 90% of the budget really is a literal "Half in the Bag" experience -- resentment at the unfair income distribution, but gratefulness for the opportunity of another movie credit for that year.
@HermannTheGreat

Did not know this, thanks for the insight. Makes sense why'd so many of them are producing strait to redbox/streaming movies. He helped some directors be lifted to higher levels of respect because of their skills , Tarantino, m night shyamalan, luc besson. I’ve seen what brain injuries can do to people first hand and I don’t blame him at all for doing these direct to video films if it’s to ensure his family are supported because there isn’t a lot you can do if your slowly losing your memory and you know there’s nothing to fix it. Now take this with a HUGE grain of salt, as it comes totally unconfirmed, but in their last Willis video a guy claiming to be part of the production of one of the movies up in Canada talked about how there was massive issues with the production in which people actually walked off of the set angry over the conditions. If true then having Willis on board does not necessarily mean everyone is doing good and getting paid. Maybe some people are, but i do not think it would be a universal constant here. Not with all the moving parts in a movie. Such as the guy in the comment i think was talking about filming done in Canada with Bruce not being on set for the mass majority of that filming. At the end of the day movies are a business out to make money, and if they CAN screw over people for more profits they will.

Shit man that scene between Willis and Wilson totally seems like Willis has dementia. It reminds me of when my Grandfather had dementia and since he couldn't really remember who we were or specific events, we would talk to him in generalized sense. Like we wouldn't talk to him about a specific baseball game, instead we would just talk about what it was like going to a baseball game in general. But the thing that really makes me think he has dementia is the way Willis was responding to Wilson. Again like my Grandfather as we were telling him these generalized stories he would just have a vacant look and occasionally look at you and go "yeah" "yeah" "Mhmm" because he couldn't remember going to a specific game but he could remember the general feeling of going to one. So him just going "yeah.....yeah......yeah....." really reminds me of my Grandpa with dementia.

Seven years ago, a Cracked video series called The Spit Take showed an interview with Willis and his wife where Bruce seemed completely confused by TV and movies. When the interviewer brought up Miyazaki's anime movies and his wife called them "poetic," Willis said, "What about _Smilla's Sense of Snow?_ " which is a 1997 live-action thriller from Denmark. That was all Willis had to say on the subject. Clearly Willis just made the connection of "foreign" in his head and just tried to contribute to the conversation that way. So yeah, he's been fading for a while, now.

Poor Bruce. Glad he has a good family to support him. I wish them well.

They pimped him for these films. Disgraceful. Not as if they were hurting for money from before!

It seemed to me like he wanted to work but was getting taken advantage of by the filmmakers. From what I know he's on good terms with Demi and his family. But it still seems weird that an actor of his fame even needs the money. I guess he just wanted to keep working even when he probably shouldn't have.

My boss went to a Chuck Berry and it was the saddest thing. They literally had an old man on a wheelchair playing small parts of his songs to later being taken out off the stage because he was falling asleep.

@@jasonscott526 Yeah tying this in with glam metal (Pam & Tommy), watch virtually any new footage of those old acts trying to do the tour circuit now, Motley Crue included. A modern day Bruce Willis cameo would be a blessing on those stages.

You guys handled like that true gentleman who obviously meant no harm whatsoever. The majority of us had absolutely no idea that Mr. Willis was suffering from a degenerative disease until seeing your video. THAT just happened to be when the pieces started to become painfully obvious for many of us. There are countless of other reviewers, publications, and regular fans, like myself, who have had identical conversations analyzing and lampooning those very same Bruce Willis movies that seemed like such a strange and disappointing career trajectory for him. We didn’t know and didn’t mean any harm either. If anything, those episodes and conversations only ended up making me even MORE empathetic for the man. In the end, regardless of how many straight to dvd films he made, I knew then, just like I know now, Bruce Willis will always be a legend.

The movie sounds like _The Protector_ with Tony Jaa if you removed all the action. That movie's basically Jaa going somewhere, saying "where's my elephant?" and then fighting everyone in the room, repeated for 90 minutes.

The twist in "The Last Page" needs to be that Bruce meets an old man wandering the wastes collecting scrap. The old man helps him find the last page, but in a final shootout the page is destroyed and Bruce thinks all hope is lost, but the old man asks Bruce what he wanted the page for and when he says it was for repairing the last VCR player, the old man reveals that he's been collecting technology from the old world for years and has a cave filled with functioning VCR players as well as other technologies that the bunker of survivors can use to rebuild. So call me if you need a script consultant.

Here again after the news that Bruce Willis does indeed have a speech/cognition disorder and will step away from acting. I saw some people on twitter say that RLM should take down these videos, but I feel they definitely addressed that possibility in these videos and are fair game considering these movies are still out there and studios are charging money for them. Anyway, best of luck to Bruce’s health.
