@@kainey a lot of animations such as: 1. the brute ripping off the marines arms 2. executions with gravity hammers, brutes able to use energy swords, 3. elites executing brutes with dual weild energy swords, 3. brutes pushing vehicles also didn't make the cut. and the over all A.I was downgraded as well.
I remember this video being on Xbox 360s HD and I watched it so many times since I didn't have live and nothing better to do. I should get live and fire up the old 360 just for H3.
The Brutes from Halo 3, ODST, and Reach have always been among my favorite enemies in the Halo Series. While I love the Elites tactics and mobility in battle, there is something intimidating about a gigantic armour clad gorilla charging at you with a war hammer, or firing at you with weapons that shoot spikes.
Playing against brutes in Halo 2 was awesome on Heroic/legendary. You'd only really encounter brutes in tight spaces and when one went berserk all hell would break lose. Instead of standing far away easy to shoot they'd run straight at you pulling you out of your hiding space and into enemy fire. God the awesome moments of pure panic when multiple berserk brutes started charging still puts a smile on my face to this day.
@@KAPAFlyer your so boring and miserable you took the time to reply to a comment that's literally 3 years ago😂😂😂how dumb and sad your life is lmfao sucks to suck, stick to being a anonymous nobody
I wish they had kept dismemberment in the actual game - like that elite slicing off the brute's legs with the sword.... and grenades stuck to people - that would fly limbs everywhere!
I don't know, I think I really preferred the Halo 2 brutes. In 3, they were trying to replace the elites and sort of ended up with a dumbed down version of them (what with the cheaper armor that just breaks as soon as you bring it down, as well as a very weak berserk mode). In Halo 2, brutes were a force to be reckoned with, especially if you couldn't find a precision weapon. A berserking brute in 2 was terrifying and lightning fast, whereas in 3 the brutes basically became defenseless targets if they attempted to go berserk.
Some chap called Paul There were even games that were finished. No need for a patch. No broken multiplayer. No literal money hunger like Activision has today. Bungie loved making Halo, they wanted to make Halo, they delivered everything that would make each individual Halo game great.
I used to love all the interactions and small tidbits hidden on every corner or the map...skulls...easter eggs...guns/ammo! Games nowadays are linear, and what happened to physics!? I can't even knock over barrels in some AAA titles nowadays and it's 2017!!!
I'll never totally understand the whole damage sponge thing. There were ways of effectively killing them were there not? Headshotting their caps and then their head, backsmacking. Though as for making them interesting and challenging to design, I guess that was another story?
MunFurai When in packs they could mess you up, you can deal with them when there is only 1-2 focuses on you but if there are other enemies like Jackals or Hunters that you have to deal with the rage mode damage just gets annoying
I loved these more in-depth behind the scenes videos, just being super honest like "this sucked so we changed it and here is what we did and why." I'd love to see more of these kinds of BTS for Destiny and other future projects.
The brutes were interesting and tough, I had so many issues fighting them in halo 3 on legendary. I was always out of ammo and trying to stay away from them. They were so much more interesting and fun to fight compared to the halo 4 knights. Gosh I really hate teleporting enemies.
What i love about bungie’s design is they always try and take medieval type ideas and implement them into a sci-fi setting. They do it so well and it shows their passion!
I thought Bungie did a great job in incorporating Brutes as fun enemies to fight. I honestly just don't really like Prometheans. They are used too much in levels, and it just isn't that fun fighting a bunch of teleporting robots. :/
In my opinion, Brutes were total shit in Halo 2. Especially when they went berserk, ugh. Just not fun to fight. Brutes in Halo 3 were better though, at least.
@@volition142 Same can be said for Halo 3 brutes, at least Halo 2 brutes could tank and when they would berserk you’d try to avoid the attacks. I still liked Halo Reach’s brutes probably the most, they had both that Halo 3 and 2 vibe
@@saintpoli6800 I have mixed I like their armor from both aesthetic and gameplay you typically use the same tactics as halo 2 but they aren’t damage sponges getting close for a melee is not ideal but is viable they also are the only brutes that cannot be assassinated or back smack. Now on to the negatives they are completely hairless, minors somehow have armorlock, they cannot berserk, hammer chieftains are a joke, and they are missing the bruteshot.
@@saintpoli6800 Reach Brutes (with the exception of its Chieftens) are my least favourite because imo they basically just combine the gameplay weaknesses of Halo 2 and 3's Brutes with none of the strengths. Halo 2's Brutes are overly easy to kill just by headshotting with precision weapons, particularly the Covenant Carbine. Halo 3's Brutes lack aggression. In Halo Reach you end up with Brutes that are easy to headhunt with weapons like the DMR, pistol, Needle Rifle and Sniper (i.e. all of the game's mid to long range powerhouses), and also generally prefer to engage the player at mid-range. imo Reach Brutes should have been more proactive in engaging the player at close range, always threatening melee, and in groups of 2-3. This would allow them to work around their headshot vulnerability. By engaging the player at mid-range the way they do, they basically just present themselves as a free shooting gallery in most encounters. The only Brute encounter in Reach that I'd say is remotely challenging, even on Legendary, is the fight right at the end before you hand Cortana over to Keyes. Halo 3 Brutes basically fight the same way, but it takes many more shots to "break" their armor (excluding the Plasma Pistol charge shot obviously) than it does to remove a Reach (or Halo 2) Brute's helmet, so usually they end up being more effective at fighting the player.
Watching this after the infinite reveal makes me wonder what 343 was thinking when designing the brutes. They look way too gorilla like and do not act brutish like they did in 2 and 3. I'm praying that they will re-work a lot of what they currently have.
If there’s any good thing to point out at least they seem way more challenging than 3s because 3s were as easy as fighting a grunt and they got the armor right because even though 3s brutes were just push overs they looked badass
It was the beginning of the end just with that statement. I actually found brutes to be generic as hell in Halo 3. Berserker mode is a joke in that game. They were just replacements for the elites.
Looking back, it's refreshing to see the devs so honest about the Halo 2 Brutes. Today, everything is carefully stage-managed but in this they openly say they're not fun to fight, bullet sponges, boring animations - a level of frankness that I think was part of why Bungie was so beloved.
The Brutes in Halo 3 were more balanced and varied, but it seemed more like they were Elites who can't recharge their energy shields. One plasma pistol shot and they're cannon fodder. The Halo 2 Brutes, as broken as they are, were more challenging. They forced you to learn how to headshot well. Otherwise, they'd snap you like a twig. You either had to be good at headshots, or have a strong melee weapon, or have two needlers. That shit was tense.
It was cool also that the Brute Honor Guards had 2 helmets on and couldn't be headshotted, forcing you to cgange up your strategies either by falling back and giving away the ground you've made in favor of finding a better weapon like the needler, or pushing forward, taking pot shots at him as you go until you get him to go beserk and kill him then.
A shame a lot of these animations they were going to do never made the final cut as this definately would've made for some interesting encounters and may have influenced how some enemies behaved in the future Halo games (Reach, Halo 4, Halo 5: Guardians etc).
if i remember right this was the very first footage that showed any ingame footage of halo 3. i remember the morning it came out and watching it with my brother before school
There is just no feeling in gaming quite like the rush of adrenaline & fear you get from the sight of a Halo 3 Brute Chieftain rushing straight towards you with a Gravity Hammer…
Brute Chieftain with a hammer...I am not one for t-bagging. In fact, I have actually unloaded half a magazine into a teammate for t-bagging an enemy. But the brute Chieftain has got to be one of the few enemies that actually provokes me to t-bag. Why? Cause you first have to go through the horror of seeing a behemoth running at you like a gorilla with a hammer that gives Thor's a run for its. Then, you have to hope you can shoot him enough to bring his power armor down. Then you have to rush to get a weapon out that can kill him now, all before he smacks you in the face with a hammer. The Brute Chieftain, if Bungie wanted to focus on giving us an adrenalin rush from the Brutes, job well done with that guy.
And, even if you brought something like a shotgun, it wouldn't even help. He would be supported by an army of long range brutes, and, it takes several shotgun shells to down the Douche. And normally, when you get your shotgun out, he is already doing a flying leap at you, ready to bring the hammer down in the most devastating way possible. Hundreds of pounds of alien falling on you from twenty feet in the air with a crater creating hammer, yeah, you're screwed. Stupid hammer.
I repressed that memory. Seeing that invincible glow coming from him means you are pretty well done. All you can do is get out the blind fold and wait for your execution. Or run. A lot.
Mikanoes Or you can sidestep when he swings his hammer thus giving a free one hit melee attack aimed at the back plus it also insta kills the chieftain when he's glowing invincible
I love these ViDocs. Not only do they offer insight into great game design in general, but they show everywhere 343 went wrong. So many fundamental missteps on their part that brought such a great series low.
OLLA from 2019! Man the golden age of video games, if only more companies had the enthusiasm that's in this vidoc, thank you old bungie for giving us a truly memorable trilogy
I honestly loved the Brutes in 3; I found them far more interesting to fight compared to the bland bullet sponge Elites, especially when they go apeshit.
Halo 3 odst brutes would have been fine if they had a immunity to plasma overcharge shot and if they didn't have that bright energy sheild Glow and just stuck with the Halo 3 sparks
the brutes in Halo 2 were beast. Almost on hunter level. I even felt at times I'd rather fight hunters cause they were so beast. I like how the brute look visually in Halo 2 the best to. They look more beastly
1:32 Damage sponges my foot. At least they didn't play like elites, where you had to muscle through their shields to headshot them. A 9 ft tall, 1,500 pound beast does NOT need shields. Halo 2 brutes were superior in every way except for design. You had the _option_ to dispose of them quickly with headshots, and they were actually brutish. They would toss you (and your marines) 10 feet in the other direction if you got too close.
Dude, Brutes do need shields, Elites are far easier for you to kill with the Plasma Pistol overcharge and so so Brutes in Halo 3. In Halo 2, Brutes don't have shiels but they have helmet, this is because there head is the only spot that you can damage with (exept for explosive wepon, Shotgun, etc on Legendary
Halo 2 Brutes had the stronger challenge aspect. But players playing from a lower level of difficulty were shocked to find enemies that didn't go down after getting sprayed with bullets or plasma.
I don't really see the Brutes as people to get angry at. In fact, I see them more as worthy foes. I feel honored when a Chieftain gives me his full attention. I feel just as honored when I blow his brains out. I pretty much see them as furry Mandalorians: strong foes and worthy adversaries, just like the Elites, but in a more "brutal" sense. Pardon the pun........XD
Still remember turning a corner, to meet a chieftain with a grav hammer. Mind you it was on Legendary and all skulls on. You bet I dropped a brick then and there.
Imagine being the most powerful person in the world, get assassinated by your friends, and your last words are used for a bunch of nerds’ demo to show off their cool aliens
I love these vidocs and this game, which is still fucking amazing. I can play the campaign any day of the week, and the multiplayer is still the best in the series. The gunplay is so tight and fun.
what's ironic is that the brutes in Halo 3 are push overs.. Back in the day I never noticed that the brutes blood is green in this video and they never ended up adding the red armored brutes as shown in this video as well.
You can see how a lot of their experience working with the Brutes in _Halo 3_ carried over into designing the Elites for _Halo: Reach,_ giving the Elite Minor, Officer, Spec Ops, Ultra, General, and Zealot each these unique armor designs that made them easier to identify, so you know exactly what to expect when you engage them. They did the same with the Grunts, giving them unique armor types based on their role. I thought that was really cool.
