Yep. I'm a simple human fighter. I have no horns, claws, or fierce-some teeth to bare. I cannot breathe fire or twist the weave to my will. I am not particularly strong, stout, nimble, charming, or witty. I have not the experience of centuries. I need a lamp to piss in the dark. I have no divine gifts, nor made deals with extraplanar patrons. Even mother nature is no true friend to me. All I have is steel and grit with which to hold it. And here I am beside you with naught but my grit and steel before the gate to all 9 Hells.

But what does one do when one plans out a human, then rolls six high even numbers? I managed that... 18, 16, 14, 12, 12, 8. Variant up a wizard, make the scores into 15 and 13, and take Tough at Level 1 for 11 HP.

Assuming that 18 went into intelligence you could have taken +1 intelligence from human stat bump and a +1 int feat, like Observant, Keen mind, Linguist. Or the UA skill feats if you DM allows. I'm partial to Keen Mind to be honest.

Won't be the only to nitpick, but 9 stat= -1 modifier, 11 stat= 0 modifier, and 12 stat= +1 modifier. At least in 5e dnd.

At 2:01 it is the 12 that is off just putting it out there PS. Im also not trying to be nitpicky just help them fix it for next time and this seemed like the best place

@@Citiy3 Yeah -- the 9 *and* the 12 were both off... (Given that this is a video series meant to help people better understand the game, it *is* important not to get little details like that off.) (Just to clarify: Jon was likely referring to the 8->9 from the later Human Variant vs. the earlier 12 that was in error.)

That variant human with their extra skill and feat is no joke. A level 1 PC with with Perception and the Observant feat becomes the most unsurprisable character. Or Investigation and Actor and you become the Chameleon. So many wonderful and exceptional human characters!

Will Friedle is perfect for the human build! I much appreciated the joke about the lack of dark vision. Now that you mention it, 5E humans DO sound like a walking motivation poster. That would be fun to roleplay (and also play for laughs, like it is here). Feats at first level are awesome.

I've just started a campaign with my friends as a human wizard, highly inspired by Caleb. This is my first DnD game and I cannot tell you how much fun it is being a human. There is so much roleplaying opportunity. For one, the lack of darkvision for me is an excellent roleplaying hook, as it forces me to actually imagine myself being in the situation and reacting appropriately (Dancing lights for example). And the feat from variant is so nice! I highly recommend new players like me to try human out!

They are objectivly the strongest race. None of the others special features outweighs raw modifiers.

@@aenorist2431 but you usually don't need all of your stats to be higher. For Barbarian, +2 to STR and CON from Mountain Dwarf is far better than +1 to everything. Variant Human however... It allows you to boost your main stat with Ability Score Improvement AND take the feat you need - that's overpowered.

I mean, they are top 3 best races. Elves are great as well, especially with Elven Accuracy, which is hands down, one of the best feats around.

It all comes down to the pesky lack of night vision. No one wants to have to carry a lantern or a torch, or waste a light spell. But they are otherwise very tempting.

In my campaign, they have been in a grand total of 1 (one) Dungeon™, and usually travel with caravans, so the lack of Darkvision hasn't been a problem to my human players

Humans aren't the only race that lacks darkvision. Halflings don't have it either, but they do have that nifty Halfling Luck. Goliaths and Minotaurs also don't have it. There are others as well. Any of them will have to carry a lantern, torch or use some sort of light magic... ...Or just become a warlock and see 120' through any darkness, even magical.

If you're planning a skill monkey build, Variant Human with the Skilled feat can allow you to start the game with a potential 15 proficiencies. On the other hand, if you're rolling for stats and get a string of odd numbers, the standard +1 to everything can be pretty awesome too.

The +1 to two ability score in variant is that an extra +1 to the normal human ability score points? Or is it a trade off on having a feat and only getting +1 for two AS's versus having +1 to all Ability scores?
